Chapter 27 - Heiress at the Gala

The restaurant Adrian chose was quiet.

Not the kind of place filled with loud conversations or crowded tables, but somewhere calm and softly lit, where the music in the background was gentle enough that people could speak without raising their voices.

Elena stepped inside and paused for a moment.

She wasn't used to places like this.

The tables were covered with crisp white cloth, candles flickered softly between polished glasses, and the entire room smelled faintly of fresh flowers and expensive food.

Then she spotted him.

Adrian was already seated near the window.

Even in a room full of well-dressed guests, he stood out effortlessly. His dark suit was simple but perfectly tailored, and the calm authority in the way he sat made it clear he belonged in places like this.

When he noticed her, he stood.

"Elena."

"Hi."

She walked over, suddenly aware of how formal everything felt.

Adrian pulled the chair out for her before sitting again.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

It felt strange sitting across from each other like this.

At the academy, their conversations had always been quiet and unexpected—short moments in hallways or outside the music room.

This felt… different.

"So," Elena said lightly, trying to ease the silence, "is this what powerful CEOs do for dinner?"

Adrian's mouth curved slightly.

"Not usually."

"That's reassuring."

The waiter arrived, took their orders, and left them alone again.

Elena rested her hands around her glass of water.

"I still can't believe you recognized me after all these years."

Adrian looked at her calmly.

"Like I said earlier, were difficult to forget."

She laughed softly.

"I wanted to discuss something with you ."

"There's an event tomorrow evening."

Elena blinked.

"That was a quick change of topic."

"It's important."

"What kind of event?"

"A charity gala."

Her eyebrows lifted slightly.

"That sounds… very formal."

"It is."

Elena studied him suspiciously.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Adrian's gaze remained steady.

"Because I want you to perform there."

She stared at him.

"Perform?"

"Yes."

Elena shook her head immediately.

"Adrian, those events are filled with politicians and billionaires. I'm not that kind of pianist."

"You're exactly that kind of pianist."

She laughed nervously.

"You have far too much confidence in me."

Adrian's voice softened slightly.

"I've heard you play."

The sincerity in his tone made her pause.

"The people attending tomorrow respect power," he continued.

"But sometimes they forget how powerful music can be."

Elena looked down at the table, thinking.

"And you want to remind them?"

"I want them to hear what I heard years ago."

Something about the way he said it made her chest warm unexpectedly.

After a moment, she sighed.

"You're very persuasive."

"Is that a yes?"

Elena smiled.

"Alright."

The gala hall shimmered with soft golden light.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, scattering reflections across polished marble floors. Elegant conversations floated through the room while waiters moved gracefully between guests carrying trays of champagne.

Elena stood near the edge of the grand ballroom, trying not to look overwhelmed.

Her performance earlier that evening had gone well.

The applause had been warm and genuine.

But now that the music had ended, she suddenly felt out of place among the glittering conversations around her.

This wasn't a concert audience.

These were powerful people.

Business leaders.

Investors.

Families whose influence shaped entire industries.

Elena quietly scanned the room.

Her eyes instinctively searched for Adrian.

She found him across the hall speaking with a group of businessmen.

Even among them, he stood out.

Tall.

Composed.

Commanding attention without trying.

The quiet boy from the academy had become someone the most powerful people in the room listened to carefully.

Elena was still watching him when a familiar voice spoke beside her.

"Your performance was beautiful."

Elena turned.

And immediately recognized her.

Seraphina Orlov.

The heiress stood beside her with the same effortless elegance Elena remembered from St. Aurelius Academy. Her silver evening dress caught the light with every movement, and her calm expression revealed nothing.

But her eyes…

Her eyes were observant.

"Well," Seraphina said softly, "it seems the academy pianist has become quite impressive."

Elena allowed herself a small smile.

"It's been a long time."

"Yes."

Seraphina studied her carefully.

"You've changed."

"I've grown up."

Seraphina's gaze drifted across the ballroom.

It landed briefly on Adrian.

He was watching them.

The moment his eyes met Elena's, something unreadable passed across his expression.

Seraphina noticed.

Of course she did.

When she looked back at Elena, a faint hint of amusement appeared in her smile.

"So," she said lightly, "my warning didn't work."

Elena held her gaze.

"I remember your warning."

"And yet here you are."

"Yes."

Seraphina studied her for a long moment.

"You're braver than I expected."

"Or more stubborn."

Seraphina laughed softly.

Then she lowered her voice slightly.

"Adrian's world hasn't become any safer since we last spoke."

"I didn't think it had."

Seraphina's eyes softened just a little.

"Good."

Before Elena could respond, a familiar voice spoke behind them.

"Seraphina."

Adrian.

He stepped beside Elena, his presence immediately changing the atmosphere around them.

Seraphina turned calmly.

"Adrian."

For a moment, the three of them stood together in silence.

A quiet triangle of tension.

Adrian's eyes flicked briefly toward Elena.

Checking.

Then he looked back at Seraphina.

"What are you doing here?"

Seraphina took a slow sip of champagne.

"I was invited."

Her gaze shifted between them again.

"And I was curious."

Adrian's voice cooled slightly.

"About what?"

Seraphina smiled faintly.

"About the girl who ignored my warning."

Elena felt the tension immediately.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But the air between them grew noticeably heavier.

Seraphina set her glass down and adjusted the sleeve of her dress.

"It's good to see old acquaintances again," she said lightly.

Her eyes lingered on Elena for a moment longer.

Then she added quietly,

"Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself."

And with that, the heiress disappeared into the crowd.

Leaving Adrian and Elena standing beneath the golden lights of the ballroom.

And Elena realized something unsettling.

Seraphina Orlov hadn't forgotten their first meeting.

Not even a little.
