Chapter 30: Christmas

[Molly's Flat, Bloomsbury — December 25, 2008, 8:30 AM]

The eggs were burned.

Not catastrophically—more a gentle overcooking that had transformed the intended scramble into something closer to rubber. Molly stood at the stove in pyjamas and a cardigan, spatula in hand, regarding the pan with the expression of a woman who could determine cause of death from liver temperature but couldn't reliably cook breakfast.

"I did it again," she said.

"They're fine."

"They're carbon. I've created carbon."

"Carbon is a building block of life. You've created life, Molly. That's impressive for a Tuesday."

"It's Thursday. It's Christmas Thursday."

"Even more impressive."

James ate the eggs. Every bite. They tasted like burned protein and determination, and they were, without question, the best breakfast he'd had in nine months—because the kitchen was warm and the fairy lights were still on from last night and Toby was sitting on his foot under the table with the proprietary confidence of a cat who'd decided this particular human was acceptable.

Molly's flat was small—one bedroom, a sitting room, a kitchen that was really a corner with appliances. Every surface held something: books, journals, half-finished mugs of tea, a cat bed that Toby ignored in favour of the sofa. Fairy lights were strung along the bookshelf, the window frame, the bathroom door. A small tree sat on the coffee table, decorated with ornaments that had the particular character of objects accumulated over years rather than purchased in sets.

It was a home. Not a headquarters, not a base of operations, not a Southwark bedsit optimised for criminal enterprise. A home. The difference was as vast and as simple as the word suggested.

"Presents?" Molly asked, clearing the plates. Her voice carried the particular excitement of someone who'd been looking forward to this moment and was trying not to show how much.

"Presents."

They sat on the sofa. Toby relocated to the armrest, maintaining supervisory distance. Molly handed James a soft parcel wrapped in paper covered with penguins—the wrapping job was enthusiastic but structurally unsound, with more tape than engineering.

Inside: a scarf. Hand-knitted, deep green wool, the stitches slightly uneven in places where the pattern had been corrected mid-row. James ran it through his fingers. The wool was soft—good quality, the kind that cost more than the knitter probably intended to spend.

"I made it," Molly said. Unnecessary clarification—the slight imperfections were the proof. "I know it's not—I mean, you can buy much nicer ones, but I wanted—"

"It's perfect."

"You haven't even tried it on."

He wrapped it around his neck. The wool sat warm against his skin, carrying the faint scent of Molly's flat—tea, old books, cat. He looked at her. She was watching him with the particular intensity of someone waiting to see if their gift had landed.

"Perfect," he said again.

She smiled. The wide one. The one that reached past the shyness and the self-deprecation and the professional caution and arrived at something undefended.

James handed her his gift. Wrapped properly—he'd paid extra at the shop, because Jim from IT could afford decent wrapping paper even if he couldn't afford the kind of restaurants Alex Richter frequented. The package was book-shaped, which Molly identified immediately.

"You got me a book?"

"Open it."

She unwrapped with care—the opposite of the penguin paper, treating the wrapping as if it mattered, sliding her finger under the tape rather than tearing. The book emerged. She read the spine.

The silence lasted four seconds. James counted.

"Jim." Her voice was different. Lower. The voice of someone whose defences had been dismantled by kindness. "This is—how did you—I mentioned this once. Months ago. One time."

"I pay attention."

"This is a first edition. This must have cost—"

"It cost the right amount for someone who deserves it."

Molly pressed the book against her chest. Her eyes were bright. She blinked twice, fast—the same reflex he'd observed at the Italian restaurant, the practised suppression of tears. But this time she didn't fully suppress them. One escaped, tracking down her cheek.

"Nobody's ever—" She stopped. Shook her head. "Thank you."

She leaned across the sofa and kissed him. Quick, soft, the kind of kiss that was more gratitude than passion but carried within it the promise of everything else. Her lips tasted like burned eggs and orange juice and the particular sweetness of a person who didn't know she was kissing a man who'd ordered a stranger's death by drowning four months ago.

James kissed her back. Gentle. Careful. The way a man held something that would break if he held it wrong.

The afternoon settled into the particular rhythm of two people who'd decided to stop performing for each other. Old films on the television—Molly chose It's a Wonderful Life, which James had seen in his previous life and which hit differently now, for reasons he couldn't examine without the examination becoming an injury.

Molly fell asleep against his shoulder somewhere during the second act. Her breathing deepened, evened, acquired the steady rhythm of genuine rest. James didn't move.

Two hours. He sat on Molly Hooper's sofa with her head on his shoulder and her cat on his lap and the fairy lights throwing soft patterns across the ceiling, and he didn't move. The Moriarty phone was in his jacket, which was hanging by the door. The Richter phone was in his other jacket, at his flat. The Jim phone was on the coffee table, face-down, silent. None of them existed. Nothing existed except this room and this woman and the extraordinary, terrifying peace of being, for two hours, nobody at all.

I could give this up for her.

The thought surfaced like a body from water—unwanted, unavoidable, demanding attention.

I could stop. Walk away from the network, the archive, the assassination arm, the information division. Hand it to Moran. Disappear. Become Jim from IT for real. Fix computers. Eat burned eggs. Knit—learn to knit. Get a cat. Get a flat with a garden. Be ordinary.

Could he?

The thought required honest examination, which meant it required examining what he'd built. Four divisions. Dozens of employees and assets. Hundreds of thousands of pounds in revenue. An archive that could reshape British politics. A network that stretched from Bratva warehouses to aristocratic drawing rooms. An assassination capability that had already ended two lives and declined a third.

He couldn't walk away from that. Not because it wouldn't let him—though it probably wouldn't—but because the person who'd built it was the person he'd become, and becoming someone else again, for the third time, was a feat of reinvention that even this body's talent for performance couldn't sustain.

Then what?

Then both. Both worlds. Both lives. The criminal and the boyfriend. The spider and the man. Hold them apart, keep them clean, maintain the separation until—until what? Until Sherlock Holmes appeared, and the game began, and the canon timeline dragged him toward a rooftop he could already see in the degrading fragments of his meta-knowledge?

Molly stirred. Murmured something against his shoulder. Settled again.

James closed his eyes. Two hours of peace. He'd take it. Bank it. Add it to the archive of things worth protecting, filed under a category that had no encryption because it needed none: the simple, devastating vulnerability of giving a damn about someone.

Dinner was better than breakfast. Molly had prepared a small roast—chicken, not turkey, because she lived alone and a turkey for one was, as she put it, "an act of delusional optimism." The chicken was properly cooked. The roast potatoes were crisp. The gravy was from a packet, which she admitted with the air of someone confessing to a minor crime.

"Packet gravy is perfectly acceptable," James said.

"Packet gravy is a failure of ambition."

"Then it's an ambitious failure. Best kind."

They ate at her small table, which was usually covered with journals but had been cleared and dressed with a tablecloth that probably belonged to her mother. Candles—real ones, not tea lights, the kind that dripped wax onto the cloth and would leave marks she'd discover later and choose not to clean.

Wine. A Rioja that was better than the occasion demanded—a gift from a colleague, Molly explained, who'd given everyone in the department the same bottle because he couldn't be bothered to personalise.

"Tell me something real," Molly said, refilling his glass.

The request arrived without warning—casual in delivery, devastating in implication. James's hand tightened on the stem of his glass. Micro-movement. He released it before she could notice.

"What do you mean?"

"Something you haven't told anyone else. Not the polished version. The real one."

James drank. The wine was warm and dark and tasted like time running out.

He could give her a manufactured confession—something personal enough to feel intimate but controlled enough to maintain the cover. An invented childhood memory. A fake vulnerability. The kind of strategic disclosure that he deployed in client meetings and asset cultivations, designed to create the illusion of transparency.

Instead, he said: "I'm afraid of becoming someone I don't recognise."

The words came from somewhere he hadn't authorised. Below the operational layer. Below the strategic layer. From the place where the man who'd died on Interstate 90 still existed, faintly, like the ghost of a radio signal from a station that had stopped broadcasting.

Molly set down her wine. "What do you mean?"

"I mean—" He chose his words the way he chose everything now, with precision and awareness of consequence. "I've changed. In the past year. Become someone different. Sometimes I look in the mirror and I'm not sure whether the person looking back is better or worse than the person who was there before."

"Better or worse at what?"

"At being... me."

Molly considered this. The candlelight moved across her face—warm, unsteady, the kind of light that forgave imperfections and highlighted sincerity.

"I think everyone feels that," she said. "But most people are too afraid to admit it. The fact that you're asking the question means the answer isn't as bad as you think."

"How do you know?"

"Because bad people don't wonder if they're bad. They just... are. And you're here. With me. Eating packet gravy and worrying about your soul. That doesn't sound like someone who's lost."

James looked at her. Across the table, across the candles and the wine and the remains of a chicken dinner that was ordinary and perfect and built on a foundation of lies so comprehensive that the truth couldn't survive contact with them.

"You're the kindest person I know," he said. And meant it. Completely. Without reservation or calculation or the smallest fraction of performance.

Molly reached across the table. Took his hand. Her fingers were warm from the wine glass, her grip firm in the way of someone who'd decided to hold on.

"Merry Christmas, Jim."

"Merry Christmas, Molly."

He left at midnight. Kissed her at the door—longer this time, slower, the kind of kiss that made promises neither of them had spoken. She watched him from the window as he walked down the street. He knew because he looked back, and her silhouette was there, small and lit by fairy lights, framed in a window of a flat that smelled like roast chicken and old books and the particular warmth of a life he was welcome in but didn't deserve.

The streets were empty. A thin layer of snow covered the pavement—London snow, already greying at the edges, already surrendering to the city's permanent low-grade warmth. James walked south. Past darkened shops. Past closed pubs. Past St. Bart's, its Victorian facade lit by security lights, the building where he'd met her and begun the most successful and most catastrophic operation of his career.

The green scarf was around his neck. Warm. Slightly uneven. Perfect.

He walked. London spread before him, quieter than he'd ever known it. Somewhere in this city—he couldn't remember exactly where, the details eroding month by month—was a flat on Baker Street that was currently empty, or occupied by someone else, or waiting for the detective who would one day make it famous. Somewhere was a veteran who hadn't been shot yet. Somewhere was a game that hadn't started.

Twenty months. Give or take. Twenty months before the canon began and the world narrowed to a contest between two men, one of whom James was supposed to be.

He wasn't ready. But he was closer than he'd been. And between now and then—between the criminal and the canon, between the spider and the story—there was Molly. There was the scarf. There was the snow.

James turned toward Southwark. Toward the flat and the floorboard compartment and the silent kettle and the notebook full of names. Toward the life he'd built and the life he was pretending to live and the diminishing space between them.

His phone buzzed. The Moriarty phone, not the Jim phone. Moran: Happy Christmas, Jim. Two inquiries waiting for January. One interesting. Rest when you can.

James pocketed the phone. Kept walking. The snow fell—light, persistent, covering the city in a temporary forgiveness that would melt by morning.
