Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: New classroom

Maho's point of view

The morning after the ceremony felt strangely normal.

If someone had walked into Hoshizora Private University that day, they would have believed it was just another elite institution. The corridors were polished, the sunlight poured through tall windows, and students moved calmly from one hall to another. It was almost convincing.

We were instructed to report to our new assigned classroom at exactly eight in the morning. Permanent students were now being integrated into the main academic structure of the university.

Our classroom was located in the East Wing, third floor.

When I stepped inside with Sara, Riko, and Tsuki, I noticed immediately that we were not alone. About twenty other students were already seated. They looked composed, confident, and far too calm for a place like this. So, these were the regulars.

A few of them glanced at us with curiosity. Some with indifference. A few with faint amusement.

I took a seat near the window. Sara sat beside me. Riko chose the desk in front of us, and Tsuki remained near the aisle, his posture relaxed but observant.

The door opened precisely at eight. Kai entered, the atmosphere shifted instantly. He was not wearing the formal suit from the ceremony. Instead, he wore the standard student uniform, though somehow it looked sharper on him than on anyone else. He walked to the front of the classroom with quiet authority, placing a folder on the desk.

"Good morning," he said smoothly. His voice carried effortlessly through the room.

"This will be your assigned class for the academic term. Your subjects will follow the selections you submitted. However, seating arrangements and group structures may change depending on performance."

His gaze moved across the room. When his eyes reached me, they paused. Not accidentally, it was intentionally. A small smile curved at the corner of his lips before he continued speaking.

"You are no longer candidates," he said. "You are permanent students. That means expectations are higher."

A hand rose from the back. A girl with sharp features asked, "Will the former trial students receive any special monitoring?"

The class grew quiet.

Kai did not look at the girl when he answered.

"They already proved themselves," he said calmly. "If anything, you should be monitoring yourselves."

A few students exchanged looks.

After the short orientation, he dismissed the class for a ten-minute break before subject distribution briefings. As students began to stand and chat quietly, I gathered my notebook. When I stepped into the corridor, I felt someone fall into step beside me.

Kai.

"You look less tense today," he observed.

"I learned that tension does not change outcomes," I replied.

He chuckled softly. "Impressive."

We walked slowly along the hallway. A few students glanced at us. Whispers followed. I could feel it.

"You seem popular," I said casually.

"I seem powerful," he corrected gently.

There was no arrogance in his tone. Just fact!! I stopped walking and turned to face him. "And which one do you prefer?"

His eyes studied me carefully." Power is temporary," he said. "Influence is permanent."

Then he leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice just enough.

"You, Maho, have influence without realizing it."

My pulse betrayed me again. "That sounds like manipulation," I replied.

"It sounds like potential," he countered.

He straightened, offering that controlled, almost dangerous smile.

"By the way," he added casually, "Dance club meets this afternoon at four. I assume you will attend?"

"How do you know my schedule?" I asked.

"I know everyone's schedule," he said lightly.

Of course he did.

He began to walk away, then paused and glanced back over his shoulder.

"Try not to let anyone underestimate you," he said. "It makes things too easy for me."

"For you?" I asked.

"For me to notice you more," he replied.

Then he walked down the corridor, hands in his pockets, leaving behind a trail of whispers and a very confused heartbeat.

Sara appeared at my side seconds later.

"Why was he smiling at you like that?" she demanded quietly.

"I have no idea," I said. But that was a lie. Because I was starting to understand. Kai was not saying such things carelessly. He was observing me. Testing me? And maybe... enjoying it?

By the time we returned to the classroom, the dynamic had changed. Students were watching more carefully now. Not just the former trial participants, but me specifically. This new classroom was not just about academics. It was about hierarchy. And somehow, without trying, I had stepped into a position I did not fully understand yet.

But one thing was certain. Kai intended to keep me close. And I was not sure whether that was a privilege...

Or a warning?
