Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Applause

Maho's Point of View

The next evening, we were summoned once again to the main hall. But this time, it did not look like a battlefield. It looked like a celebration.

This evening of the ceremony arrived with unexpected elegance. When we entered the main hall, it no longer resembled the place where names had disappeared from a screen. Golden lights illuminated the ceiling, and deep red banners hung neatly along the walls. A crystal chandelier reflected soft light across the polished marble floor, and instrumental music played gently in the background. It felt like we were attending a prestigious university gala rather than a celebration for survivors.

Sara looked around in disbelief. She whispered ''How can they even celebrate something like this?''

Riko remained quiet, observing everything carefully.

Tsuki stood straight beside us, calm but alert, as though he did not fully trust the atmosphere.

The principal stepped onto the stage wearing an elegant black gown. Her smile was warm and composed.

''Tonight," "she began, "we formally welcome the four students who have successfully completed the Final Residential Trial. From one hundred candidates, only four have demonstrated the excellence required to remain at Hoshizora Private University as permanent students."

The spotlight moved slowly and settled on us. Applause filled the hall. It was controlled and formal, not loud or joyful. It felt rehearsed already and now they are here doing it!

Kai stood beside the principal in a dark suit. He looked composed and authoritative, more like a leader than a student. When he stepped forward to speak, the room became completely silent.

"Survival is not simply about strength," he said calmly. "It is about awareness, discipline, and adaptability. You have proven that you understand this." His eyes briefly met mine before shifting back to the audience.

We were called onto the stage one by one. Riko walked first, then Tsuki, then Sara. When my name was announced, I forced myself to move steadily despite the tension in my chest.

The principal handed me a black and gold identification card that officially marked me as a permanent student. Kai stepped closer to attach a small silver pin to my blazer. His movements were careful and precise.

"You adjusted quickly," he said quietly, so only I could hear.

"I did what I had to do," I replied.

He gave a faint smile. "That is exactly why you are still here."

His fingers brushed lightly against the fabric near my collar as he adjusted the pin. The contact was brief, but my pulse reacted instantly. I don't know what happens to me, whenever he is near.

When the ceremony ended, we were guided to a formal dinner arranged in the adjoining hall. Long tables were set with polished silverware and crystal glasses. The atmosphere felt refined and controlled. Conversations remained polite and measured.

It was impossible not to notice who was absent. The students who had not been selected were nowhere in sight. No one mentioned them. It was as if they had never been part of this place at all.

After some time, I excused myself and stepped onto the balcony for fresh air. The night sky stretched above the campus, and the buildings glowed softly under carefully placed lights. From a distance, Hoshizora looked like a dream institution filled with promise.

"It looks peaceful from here," Kai said from behind me. I turned slowly. He stood a few steps away, hands in his pockets, his expression calm.

"It almost makes you forget everything else," I said.

"Almost," he replied.

We stood side by side, looking out over the campus. "You handled the arena well," he continued. "Many people panic when they realize the odds are against them."

"I was afraid," I admitted. "I just refused to freeze."

He looked at me with quiet interest. "That is what makes you different."

I raised an eyebrow slightly. "Different in a good way?"

"That depends on what you plan to become," he answered.

The music from inside drifted softly onto the balcony. For a moment, the tension between us felt heavier than the silence.

"You should be careful," he said after a pause. "This place has a way of changing people."

"Has it changed you?" I asked.

His expression did not shift, but something in his eyes darkened slightly. "It has refined me," he replied.

Before I could respond, voices approached from inside the hall. Kai stepped back, restoring a polite distance between us.

"Welcome to permanence, Maho Rin Suzuki," he said quietly. "I look forward to seeing what choices you make next."

Then he returned to the celebration, leaving me alone with the night air and the weight of his words.

As I reentered the hall, applause erupted once more for some formal announcement. The lights sparkled, the music continued, and laughter filled the space.

Everything appeared perfect. But I understood something clearly in that moment. Hoshizora did not celebrate without intention.

And if this was the reward for surviving, then the next challenge was already waiting for us.
