The hallway on the thirty-second floor was silent.
The building had long since emptied for the night. Only a few dim lights remained on in the corridor, casting pale reflections across the polished floor.
Three figures stood beneath those lights.
Victor Han.
Lina Zhao.
Adrian Lu.
For a moment, none of them moved.
Victor's gaze slowly shifted from Lina to Adrian. His eyes were calm, but behind them burned a cold fury that had not faded since his empire collapsed.
"So," Victor said softly.
"The ghost finally appears."
Adrian stepped forward from the elevator.
The doors slid shut behind him with a quiet click.
"You shouldn't have come here tonight," Adrian replied.
Victor tilted his head slightly.
"Oh?"
His lips curved into a faint smile.
"I think this is exactly where I was meant to come."
He lifted his hand, revealing the small black flash drive between his fingers.
The tiny device looked harmless.
But everyone in that hallway knew it carried the final proof of Han Corporation's crimes.
"This," Victor said calmly, "is the only backup copy of the financial system that hasn't been leaked."
Lina's eyes narrowed slightly.
Victor continued slowly.
"With this, the regulators could prove everything beyond doubt."
Adrian's gaze remained fixed on the device.
"That won't save you."
Victor shrugged.
"Perhaps not."
"But it can still destroy a lot of people."
Lina stepped slightly closer, her voice calm but firm.
"What exactly are you trying to do, Victor?"
Victor looked at her.
For a brief moment, something almost nostalgic passed through his expression.
"You've always been intelligent, Lina."
"But tonight…"
He gestured toward Adrian.
"…you made a mistake."
"And what mistake is that?" she asked.
Victor's smile widened faintly.
"Trusting him."
The words hung in the quiet hallway.
Lina didn't react immediately.
Instead, she looked at Adrian.
Victor chuckled softly.
"Do you even know who he really is?"
Adrian remained silent.
But Lina's brow furrowed slightly.
Victor slowly began pacing across the hallway.
"I spent the last two hours investigating the man who destroyed my network."
He stopped and looked directly at Adrian.
"You're not just a freelance programmer."
Adrian crossed his arms.
"Keep talking."
Victor's voice grew colder.
"Three years ago, a cybersecurity company called Orion Systems collapsed after a catastrophic internal breach."
Lina's eyes flickered.
She remembered that case.
At the time, it had dominated business news for weeks.
One of the largest technology security disasters in the country.
Victor continued.
"The architect of Orion's security infrastructure vanished the same day the company collapsed."
His gaze sharpened.
"Adrian Lu."
Silence fell.
Victor turned slowly toward Lina.
"The brilliant engineer who built one of the most advanced corporate defense systems ever designed."
He paused.
"And the man blamed for destroying it."
Lina slowly looked at Adrian.
"Is that true?"
Adrian sighed quietly.
"Yes."
Victor spread his hands slightly.
"You see?"
His tone carried quiet satisfaction.
"The man you trust destroyed his own company."
"And now he stands here pretending to save yours."
Lina studied Adrian carefully.
Her voice was calm.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Adrian answered honestly.
"Because the story isn't what Victor thinks it is."
Victor laughed under his breath.
"Oh, I'm sure there's a heroic explanation."
Adrian ignored the sarcasm.
"Orion Systems was investigating a hidden financial manipulation network."
Victor's smile slowly faded.
Adrian continued.
"That network was using compromised corporate servers to manipulate market movements."
He looked directly at Victor.
"One of those companies was Han Corporation."
Victor's eyes hardened instantly.
"That's nonsense."
Adrian took another step forward.
"The investigation was close to exposing it."
He spoke calmly, but the weight of his words filled the hallway.
"Then someone inside Orion sabotaged the system."
Lina's eyes widened slightly.
Adrian's voice grew quieter.
"That sabotage destroyed the company."
"And the blame landed on me."
Victor scoffed.
"You expect anyone to believe that?"
Adrian shrugged.
"You paid someone inside Orion to do it."
Victor's fingers tightened slightly around the flash drive.
Adrian noticed.
"So the question is," Adrian said softly,
"how much proof is inside that drive?"
Victor didn't answer.
The silence between them stretched.
Then Victor slowly slipped the flash drive back into his pocket.
"You're clever," he said.
"But you misunderstand something."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"What's that?"
Victor's smile returned.
"You assumed I came here to negotiate."
The atmosphere suddenly changed.
Something dangerous flashed in Victor's eyes.
Before Lina could react—
Victor lunged forward.
His hand shot toward her arm.
It happened in less than a second.
But Adrian was already moving.
He stepped forward instantly and grabbed Victor's wrist mid-motion.
The two men collided.
Victor struggled violently, trying to pull free.
But Adrian twisted his arm sharply and forced him backward.
Victor slammed against the hallway wall.
The impact echoed through the empty corridor.
Victor tried to strike again.
Adrian blocked it.
Within seconds, the struggle ended.
Victor's breathing grew heavier.
For the first time that night—
He looked shaken.
Adrian stepped back but kept his guard up.
"It's over."
Victor leaned against the wall and laughed bitterly.
"Yes."
"It is."
Distant sirens echoed outside the building.
Police.
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
Then he looked back at Adrian.
"You know something ironic?"
Adrian didn't respond.
Victor's voice was quieter now.
"You spent years hiding after Orion collapsed."
His eyes flicked briefly toward Lina.
"And tonight…"
He smirked faintly.
"…you stepped back into the world for her."
Adrian remained silent.
Victor nodded slowly.
"I understand that."
For a moment, the anger faded from his face.
Leaving behind only exhaustion.
"Careful, Adrian Lu."
His voice dropped.
"Men like us don't usually get happy endings."
The elevator chimed again.
Police officers rushed into the hallway.
"Victor Han!" one of them shouted.
"You're under arrest for financial crimes and market manipulation."
Victor didn't resist.
He allowed them to place the handcuffs around his wrists.
As they led him toward the elevator, he stopped once.
And looked back.
First at Adrian.
Then at Lina.
Then he smiled faintly.
And disappeared into the elevator.
The doors closed.
Silence returned to the hallway.
Lina exhaled slowly.
The tension of the entire night seemed to drain from her shoulders.
She turned toward Adrian.
"So…"
Her voice softened slightly.
"The mysterious hacker who saved my company…"
She studied him carefully.
"…is also the man blamed for destroying Orion Systems."
Adrian rubbed the back of his neck.
"Not exactly the best résumé."
A small laugh escaped her.
"No."
"But it's impressive."
For the first time since they met—
Lina looked at him not as an employee.
But as an equal.
Outside the windows, the city lights shimmered quietly.
The war was finally over.
And yet—
Something new had just begun.
