Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30: Controlled Proximity

The shift after the first public match was immediate.

Recognition spread faster than rumors.

By the next morning, Rei and Airi were no longer unnoticed. Their performance in the gym had circulated through quiet conversations, careful exaggerations, and selective observations. Not dominant. Not overwhelming. But unnatural.

A weak partner who adapted too quickly.

A strategist who controlled more than the game.

That was enough to draw attention.

And attention—

Was leverage.

Rei stood near the vending machines, watching the flow of students in the hallway.

Patterns had already begun to adjust.

Pairs who had once trained independently now observed others more closely. Some avoided strong opponents. Others actively sought them out. A few had begun interfering indirectly—subtle disruptions during training, small psychological pressures, calculated distractions.

The exam had not started.

But the battlefield had expanded.

Airi approached from the stairwell.

Her steps were faster than before. More certain.

She stopped beside Rei, slightly closer than necessary.

"I finished the morning drills," she said.

Rei glanced at her.

"Your timing?"

"Improved," Airi replied. "Not perfect, but… better."

Rei studied her posture.

Aligned. Controlled.

Eyes steady.

Progress confirmed.

"You were watched," Rei said.

Airi hesitated. "…I noticed."

"Did it affect you?"

"…A little."

Rei nodded once.

"That will decrease."

Airi exhaled softly. "…I hope so."

Rei turned fully toward her.

"It will," she said.

The certainty in her voice settled something inside Airi.

Not completely.

But enough.

"Come," Rei said.

Airi followed immediately.

They moved toward the indoor training rooms—smaller, quieter spaces designed for controlled practice.

Fewer observers.

Fewer variables.

Better conditions for refinement.

Inside, the air was still.

Rei closed the door behind them.

"Today," she said, "we adjust synchronization."

Airi blinked. "…We already improved yesterday."

"Yes," Rei replied. "Now we remove delay."

A pause.

"…Delay?"

"You still process before acting," Rei said. "That must be eliminated."

Airi frowned slightly. "…I don't know if I can—"

"You can," Rei interrupted.

Airi looked at her.

"…How?"

Rei stepped closer.

"By reducing distance."

Airi's breath caught slightly.

"…Distance?"

"Yes."

Rei moved into position.

"Stand here."

Airi obeyed.

Rei adjusted her stance—closer than before.

Much closer.

"Watch me," Rei said.

Airi nodded.

Rei moved.

A simple motion. A step. A shift. A turn.

Airi followed—

A fraction too late.

"Again."

Rei moved.

Airi followed.

Still delayed.

Rei stepped closer.

Now their shoulders nearly aligned.

"Don't think," she said quietly. "Mirror."

Airi swallowed.

"…Okay."

Rei moved again.

Airi followed.

Closer this time.

Less delay.

"Again."

The repetitions continued.

Step. Turn. Shift. Adjust.

Each time, Rei closed the distance slightly.

Each time, Airi responded faster.

Until—

There was no space left.

Their movements aligned.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Airi's breathing had changed.

Not from exertion.

From proximity.

Rei noticed.

Of course she did.

"Focus," Rei said softly.

"…I am."

But her voice betrayed her.

Rei didn't step back.

Instead, she reached out—

And guided Airi's arm.

A small correction.

A precise adjustment.

Airi froze.

Just for a moment.

"Too slow," Rei said.

Airi forced herself to move again.

"…Right."

They continued.

Closer.

Faster.

More precise.

Something shifted.

Airi stopped hesitating.

Not completely.

But enough.

Her movements matched Rei's almost instinctively now.

No delay.

No processing.

Only response.

Rei stepped back at last.

"Better," she said.

Airi exhaled slowly.

"…That felt different."

"Yes."

"…I didn't think. I just moved."

Rei nodded.

"That is the objective."

Airi looked at her.

"…But it only works when you're close."

Rei met her gaze.

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Then stay close."

The words came out before Airi could stop them.

Silence followed.

Rei didn't react immediately.

She observed.

Measured.

Understood.

Attachment deepening beyond projection.

"…If that increases efficiency," Rei said calmly, "then proximity will be maintained."

Airi nodded quickly. "…Right. Efficiency."

But her gaze lingered.

Rei turned away.

"Again," she said.

They repeated the exercise.

This time—

Closer from the start.

Outside the room, footsteps passed. Voices murmured. The campus continued its silent competition.

Inside—

Something else was forming.

Later, as they stepped back into the hallway, the atmosphere felt different again.

Not because of others.

Because of them.

Airi walked beside Rei.

Closer.

Deliberately.

"…Can I ask something?" Airi said.

"Yes."

"…Do you trust me?"

The question lingered.

Unexpected.

Rei didn't answer immediately.

Trust was not a concept she used lightly.

Not in this context.

Not in this system.

"No," she said.

Airi's expression faltered—just slightly.

"…Oh."

"But I rely on you," Rei continued.

Airi looked up.

"…That's different."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Then I won't fail you."

Rei studied her.

The tone had changed.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Only intent.

Dependency approaching commitment.

Across the hallway—

A presence.

Arisu Sakayanagi

She stood quietly, observing.

Eyes sharp.

Smile faint.

Rei met her gaze.

No words exchanged.

None needed.

Sakayanagi's eyes shifted briefly to Airi.

Then back to Rei.

Recognition.

Interest.

Curiosity.

Then she turned away.

"She was watching us," Airi whispered.

"Yes."

"…Is that bad?"

Rei's gaze remained forward.

"No."

A pause.

"It means we're worth observing."

Airi nodded slowly.

"…Then we'll give them something to watch."

Rei didn't respond.

But she didn't disagree.

The exam had not begun.

But the pressure had already taken shape.

Rivals were watching.

Strategies were forming.

Attachments were deepening.

And Rei—

Was no longer just controlling the game.

She was shaping the pieces within it.
