Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 29: First Collision

The third day after partner registration marked a shift.

Training alone was no longer enough.

Pairs had begun observing each other. Measuring. Comparing. Testing. The quiet tension that had defined the past days now sharpened into something more deliberate. More dangerous.

Competition had begun—long before the official start of the exam.

Rei arrived at the indoor gymnasium just before noon.

The space echoed with movement. Shoes scraped against polished floors. Basketballs struck the ground in steady rhythms. Voices rose and fell in sharp bursts of coordination—or conflict.

Airi followed closely behind her.

Closer than yesterday.

Not out of uncertainty.

Out of alignment.

Rei noticed.

Dependency stabilizing.

"Today," Rei said as they stepped inside, "we test interaction."

Airi blinked. "…Interaction?"

"With other pairs."

A pause.

"…So we're not just training?"

"No."

Airi's posture shifted slightly.

Not fear.

Anticipation.

Across the court, several pairs had already formed small practice matches.

Basketball.

Fast-paced. Reactive. Unforgiving.

Rei's gaze swept the room.

Then stopped.

At the far end—

Kakeru Ryuen again.

His presence was unmistakable. His movements controlled, deliberate. His partner mirrored him almost perfectly. Their coordination had improved even further.

They weren't just strong.

They were synchronized.

"They're here too," Airi said quietly.

"Yes."

"…Are we going to face them?"

Rei turned slightly.

"Not yet."

Airi exhaled softly.

Relief.

Followed immediately by something else.

Disappointment.

Rei noticed both.

A group approached them.

Two students from Class C.

Confident. Balanced. Observant.

"You're from Class D," one of them said, eyes fixed on Rei.

"Yes," Rei replied.

"We heard about your last exam."

A pause.

"…We want to test you."

Airi stiffened slightly.

Rei didn't.

"Basketball?" she asked.

"Yes."

Rei nodded once.

"Accepted."

They moved onto the court.

The noise around them faded—not completely, but enough to isolate the moment.

Pairs nearby slowed, watching.

Curiosity spread quickly.

Class D's strategist.

Her unknown partner.

Airi stood beside Rei, her breathing steady—but her fingers tightened slightly.

"…I've never played seriously," she whispered.

"I know," Rei said.

"…Then—"

"Follow my instructions."

Airi nodded.

The game began.

The ball moved fast.

Their opponents were coordinated—quick passes, controlled movement, efficient spacing.

Airi reacted half a second too late.

Every time.

Rei adjusted immediately.

"Left," she said.

Airi moved.

"Closer."

She adjusted.

"Watch his shoulder, not the ball."

Airi hesitated—then corrected.

They lost the first point.

Cleanly.

No resistance.

Airi's breath tightened slightly. "…I messed up."

"Yes," Rei said.

The bluntness hit—but didn't break her.

"…I'll do better."

"You will," Rei replied.

Second play.

Faster.

Sharper.

Rei intercepted a pass.

"Run."

Airi ran.

Not perfectly—but faster than before.

Rei passed.

Airi caught it—barely.

Hesitation.

A fraction of a second.

Too long.

The ball was stolen.

"Don't think," Rei said immediately. "Act."

"…Right."

Third play.

The rhythm changed.

Airi's movements weren't precise—but they were faster.

Less hesitation.

More instinct.

Rei adjusted her positioning constantly, compensating, guiding, controlling the flow.

They scored.

A ripple moved through the observing students.

Subtle.

But noticeable.

"Again," Rei said.

Airi nodded.

The game continued.

Point by point.

Mistake by correction.

Hesitation by adaptation.

By the midpoint, something had changed.

Airi no longer waited for instructions.

She anticipated them.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Rei saw it clearly.

Synchronization emerging.

Their opponents adjusted.

More aggressive now.

Targeting Airi directly.

Pressure increased.

Airi faltered once.

Then again.

Her breathing shifted.

Her steps slowed.

Rei stepped closer.

"Focus," she said.

"…I'm trying."

"Don't try."

Airi's jaw tightened.

"…Then tell me what to do."

Rei's eyes sharpened.

"Trust my direction."

A pause.

"…I do."

The words were quiet.

But absolute.

Final play.

The score was even.

Tension tightened across the court.

Rei moved first.

Fast. Precise. Controlled.

Airi followed—

Not perfectly.

But without hesitation.

The ball came to her.

No time to think.

No time to doubt.

She acted.

The shot landed.

Clean.

Silence—

Then noise.

The game ended.

Airi stood still for a moment.

Then looked at her hands.

"…We won."

"Yes," Rei said.

Their opponents stepped back, expressions controlled but tense.

"You improved fast," one of them said, looking at Airi.

Airi didn't answer.

She looked at Rei instead.

Rei met her gaze.

"You adapted."

Airi's chest tightened slightly.

"…Because of you."

Rei didn't deny it.

Across the gym, Ryuen watched.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Interest.

Recognition.

And something sharper.

Rei noticed.

Of course she did.

"Again tomorrow," she said, turning away.

Airi followed immediately.

"…Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

As they left the gym, the noise faded behind them.

But something had changed.

Not just in performance.

Not just in strategy.

In connection.

Airi walked closer now.

Not unconsciously.

Not accidentally.

Deliberately.

Rei allowed it.

For now.

Because control was not only about direction.

It was about proximity.

Presence.

Influence.

And Airi—

Was already within her reach.
