Penny's POV
I arrived at the office at seven-thirty, much earlier than my normal schedule. Sleep had eluded me completely. Hours of tossing between my sheets, reliving every single word Bernie had spoken in his office yesterday.
"I'll keep waiting."
Those words circled through my mind like a relentless echo. Waiting for what precisely? For the conversation that never happened in the garden? For some decision I was supposed to make? For a courage that clearly didn't exist within me?
I settled into my desk chair and powered up my computer, attempting to concentrate on the report due by noon. Yet every sound from the corridor made me lift my head, scanning for that recognizable figure, the dark brown hair, those piercing green eyes that always seemed to see straight into my soul.
Absolutely pathetic.
