Chapter 10 - APPROVAL

Later in the evening, as music floated through the hall and conversations rose and softened around them, Nathan's father sought Audrey out again.

He stood beside her near one of the terrace doors, his hands loosely clasped behind his back.

"You stayed composed tonight," he said.

Audrey looked at him, unsure how to respond.

"I noticed more than people think," he added.

She offered a small polite smile. "I didn't want to ruin your celebration."

His gaze remained thoughtful. "Many would have."

There was a pause.

Then he said, "My son does not bring people into this family space lightly."

Audrey's pulse shifted.

"I can see why he brought you."

The words were simple, but they carried weight.

Approval.

Not exaggerated. Not theatrical.

Real.

"Thank you, sir," she said quietly.

He inclined his head once, then looked toward Nathan, who was speaking with a guest nearby, but whose attention seemed never fully away from Audrey.

"He has always been difficult to impress," his father said. "So have I."

Audrey glanced toward Nathan too.

"And yet," the older man added, "you seem to have done both."

Before Audrey could answer, he moved away, leaving those words behind like a quiet blessing.

When the formal part of the celebration eased and guests began relaxing into smaller conversations, Nathan led Audrey to a quieter terrace overlooking the gardens.

The air was cooler there, calmer than the crowded warmth inside. The lights below shimmered softly across trimmed hedges and stone pathways.

For the first time all evening, Audrey felt like she could breathe fully.

Nathan stood beside her, one hand resting lightly on the railing. "You were remarkable tonight."

She laughed softly. "That sounds exaggerated."

"It isn't."

Audrey turned toward him. "Your father liked the gift."

"He did more than like it."

She looked down. "I'm glad."

Nathan studied her profile for a moment before speaking again. "You won his approval."

Audrey blinked and met his eyes. "That sounds serious."

"In this family, it is."

She was quiet for a second, then asked, "And what about your approval?"

Nathan's gaze deepened, steady and impossible to escape.

"You had that before tonight."

The words landed somewhere dangerous inside her.

Her fingers tightened around her clutch.

"Nathan…"

He stepped a little closer, not touching her, but close enough that she could feel the heat of him in the cool night air.

"I meant what I said," he told her quietly.

Her heartbeat quickened. "About what?"

"About pursuing you."

Audrey's breath caught.

He did not look away.

"I won't rush you," he said. "I won't force anything. But I will not pretend I feel nothing either."

The world seemed to go still around them.

Audrey's voice came softer than she intended. "You make things very hard."

A faint smile touched his mouth. "Good. You should know what you do to me."

She looked away first, because if she didn't, she wasn't sure what would happen.

Inside the hall, music drifted faintly into the night.

Behind them, the party continued.

But for Audrey, the evening had already become something else entirely.

Because despite Damian's cold stare, Serene's bitterness, Nathan's sister's hatred, and the weight of unfamiliar judgment, she had stood her ground.

She had won Nathan's father's approval.

And far more dangerously—

she was beginning to realize that Nathan was no longer just her protector.

He was becoming the one man she could not stop thinking about.
