Chapter 16 - A WEDDING OF GOLD... AND CRACKS BENEATH

The entire country was watching.

From early morning, headlines flooded every platform:

"The Wedding of the Year."

"Damian Laurent and Serene's Grand Union."

"A Billionaire Celebration Like No Other."

And they weren't exaggerating.

The venue alone was breathtaking—an expansive estate transformed into a dream of gold and ivory. Crystal chandeliers hung from transparent canopies, fresh imported flowers lined every walkway, and a live orchestra played softly in the background as guests arrived in luxury cars one after another.

Politicians. Celebrities. Business moguls.

Everyone who mattered was there.

Inside the bridal suite, Serene stood in front of the mirror, her wedding gown flowing elegantly around her.

Perfect.

Everything was perfect.

And yet—

Her chest felt tight.

"Miss, it's time," one of the attendants said gently.

Serene nodded, pushing the feeling away.

Today was her day.

Nothing would ruin it.

The ceremony began shortly after.

Damian stood confidently at the altar, his expression calm, almost proud, as the doors opened.

Serene walked in.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

She was radiant.

Graceful.

Untouchable.

And as she reached Damian, the two exchanged vows that sounded flawless to everyone listening.

Applause followed.

Cheers.

Cameras flashing endlessly.

To the world—

It was perfection.

But the real shift came during the reception.

That was when they arrived.

Audrey stepped into the hall beside Nathan, with Jane walking just behind them.

The moment they entered—

Heads turned.

Conversations paused.

Eyes followed.

Audrey looked effortlessly elegant, her presence quiet yet commanding, while Nathan beside her radiated his usual calm authority.

Together—

They drew attention without even trying.

Jane leaned closer and whispered, "We just stole the spotlight."

Audrey sighed softly. "That's not what I want."

But it was already happening.

Not long after, their father arrived with the rest of the family.

Audrey's gaze shifted immediately—

And froze.

Across the hall, standing beside Isabella…

Was Clara.

Their stepmother.

Laughing.

Talking.

Comfortable.

Familiar.

Audrey frowned slightly.

Jane noticed it too.

"How does she know her?" Jane whispered.

Audrey's brows furrowed deeper.

Clara had always been clear about her past.

She used to work at a club.

Nothing about her background connected to someone like Isabella—

An aristocratic, powerful woman from a prestigious family.

And yet—

There they were.

Like old acquaintances.

No—

Like something more.

Jane's voice dropped. "This doesn't make sense."

Audrey nodded slowly.

Their eyes shifted to their father—

Hoping for some kind of reaction.

Some explanation.

But he walked past them as if they weren't even there.

No greeting.

No acknowledgment.

Nothing.

The silence from him hurt more than anything.

Jane looked away first, her expression tightening.

Audrey felt it too—

That quiet sting.

But after everything they had been through—

They let it go.

Or at least…

They tried to.

The music changed.

Soft.

Inviting.

The dance floor opened.

Couples began to gather.

Nathan turned slightly toward Audrey.

"Dance with me."

It wasn't a question.

Audrey hesitated for a moment—

Then placed her hand in his.

As they stepped onto the floor, something shifted again.

The lights.

The music.

The attention.

Everything seemed to center around them.

Nathan's hand rested firmly at her waist, guiding her effortlessly as they moved.

Audrey followed naturally, her movements graceful, almost hypnotic.

They didn't need to speak.

Their connection spoke for them.

The room grew quieter.

Eyes drawn to them.

And just like that—

They became the focus.

Again.

Across the hall, Serene watched.

Her smile remained in place—

But her eyes hardened.

This was her wedding.

Her moment.

And yet—

They were the ones everyone was watching.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her glass.

Beside her, Damian noticed—but said nothing.

As the dance ended, soft applause filled the room.

Nathan and Audrey stepped away, unaware—or perhaps unconcerned—about the effect they had just created.

A few moments later, Serene's mother approached Audrey.

Her expression was different now.

Gentler.

Regretful.

"Audrey," she called softly.

Audrey turned, surprised.

"Can we talk?"

Audrey nodded.

They stepped aside, away from the crowd.

For a moment, Serene's mother didn't speak.

Then—

"I'm sorry."

Audrey blinked. "For what?"

"For my daughter," she said quietly. "For everything she's done to you."

Audrey was silent.

"I truly cared about you," she continued. "I still do. I saw you like my own daughter."

There was sincerity in her voice.

Real regret.

Audrey softened slightly.

"You don't have to apologize for her," Audrey said gently.

"I do," she insisted. "Because I should have done more."

Audrey shook her head faintly.

"You couldn't have stopped her," she said.

Serene's mother sighed.

"Still… I wish things had turned out differently."

Audrey gave a small, understanding nod.

"So do I."

As the night continued—

Laughter filled the air.

Music played.

Celebrations carried on.

But beneath the beauty and luxury—

Something was shifting.

Unnoticed.

Unspoken.

And far from over.
