Chapter 7 - A THOUGHTFUL GIFT

By late afternoon, Audrey found herself walking into a refined antique and luxury gift store in the quieter part of the city.

She had thought long and hard about what to buy Nathan's father. Men like him probably received expensive watches, rare liquor, cufflinks, artwork and very lavish thing money could buy. Audrey knew that simply buying something costly would not matter.

It had to mean something.

She moved slowly through the store, ignoring anything flashy, until her eyes landed on a fountain pen set displayed beside a leather-bound journal.

The attendant noticed her interest and stepped forward.

"This set is handcrafted," he explained. "Limited production. The pen is engraved with vintage design inspired by old executive pieces. The journal is genuine leather, made to age well over time".

Audrey studied it for a moment.

It was refined. Matured. Practical, but personal.

She thought of Nathan's father- a man of status, discipline and ag. A man who had seen enough wealth not to be dazzled by it. A man who might appreciate something chosen with care rather than bought for show.

"Can I see it?"

The attendant placed it in her hands carefully.

Audrey smiled faintly.

Yes.

This felt right.

"Please wrap it," she said.

As the attendant prepared the gift, Audrey added a card.

She paused with the pen in her hand, then wrote:

Happy Birthday, Sir.

A gift for your thoughts, your wisdom and the legacy you continue to build.

---Audrey

She read it once, hoping it was respectful and not too familiar, then handed it over.

When she left the store, she felt calmer than she had all day.

Whatever happened tonight, at least she would arrive with sincerity.

Evening came too quickly.

Audrey slipped into the dress, and for the first time, she could barely recognize herself in the room.

The gown embraced her body with effortless elegance, making her look graceful and almost regal. Her hair had been styled softly away from her face, and the bracelet Nathan sent caught the light every time she moved. Ther was nothing loud about her appearance, but there was something unforgettable in its quiet beauty.

Jane stared openly for several seconds before speaking.

"You look like the kind of woman who ruins men's lives without even trying."

Audrey laughed despite herself. "Jane."

"I'm serious," Jane said, walking around her dramatically. "Nathan is finished".

Before Audrey could answer, her phone buzzed.

Nathan was outside.

Her heartbeat quickened.

When she stepped out of the house and saw Nathan standing beside the car, she almost forgot to breathe.

He was dressed in a tailored black suit that fit him like it had been made for him alone. His posture was calm, his face composed, but the moment his eyes landed on Audrey, something in his expression shifted.

He looked at her for a long second.

Then another.

Audrey's fingers tightened around her clutch.

"You're staring," she said softly.

Nathan stepped closer, his gaze still on her. "I'm trying to recover".

Heat rushed to her cheeks.

Jane, standing by the door, covered a smiled.

Nathan's eyes moved over the dress briefly, then returned to her face. "You wore it".

Audrey nodded. "Thank you. It's beautiful".

"It was beautiful before you put it on," he said. " Now it's fair".

Audrey looked away, her pulse stumbling.

Nathan opened the car door for her with easy formality. "Come on. We shouldn't be late."

As the car pulled away, Audrey rested the wrapped gift carefully on her lap.

Nathan noticed. "You brought something for my father?"

"Yes."

"You didn't have to."

"I know," she replied calmly. "I wanted to."

Nathan studied her for a moment, then looked away with a faint expression she could not quite read.

He seemed.... pleased.
