Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: When Fate Starts Watching

The city slept.

Lanterns flickered in quiet streets, and the wind carried the distant sound of the river outside the capital walls.

But Arin Veyron was awake.

He sat at the small wooden table in his apartment, the fractured compass placed carefully in front of him.

The needle moved slowly.

Not violently like before.

But enough to confirm something important.

The distortion event at the factory had not been natural.

Arin tapped the table lightly.

"Two early distortions in one day…"

Impossible under normal conditions.

That meant someone — or something — was accelerating the timeline.

Which meant the hidden manipulators were already reacting.

He leaned back slightly.

Good.

That meant he had already become visible on the board.

Across the table sat Elara Thorn.

She had followed him all the way from the factory.

Without permission.

Without hesitation.

Without leaving.

Now she stared at the compass with quiet curiosity.

"You still haven't explained what that thing is."

Arin replied calmly,

"A tool."

"That monster came from the air because of that tool."

"No," he corrected.

"The tool showed me the crack."

Elara crossed her arms.

"You knew it would appear."

"Yes."

"You knew the monster would come."

"Yes."

Her eyes narrowed.

"And you knew I would be there."

Arin didn't answer immediately.

That silence told her enough.

"You did," she whispered.

He finally spoke.

"In the previous timeline, you died there."

Elara blinked.

"…What?"

Arin met her eyes.

"You approached the distortion alone."

"Yes."

"The fracture widened."

"…Yes."

"A Rift Stalker emerged."

Her breathing slowed.

"That's exactly what happened."

"Yes."

"And you're saying that… already happened before?"

"Yes."

Silence filled the room.

Finally she said quietly,

"You're insane."

"Probably."

"But that still doesn't explain how you knew."

Arin looked at the compass again.

"I've seen the end of the world."

She stared at him.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"Then tell me something."

Her voice became colder.

"How does it end?"

Arin answered immediately.

"With humanity losing."

At the same moment…

Inside the noble district…

Cassian Vale read a short report delivered by his shadow attendant.

Factory district. Spatial distortion. Unknown monster sighting.

Witnesses: Two.

Arin Veyron.

Elara Thorn.

Cassian leaned back in his chair.

"So the commoner was there again."

The attendant nodded.

"He left the academy immediately after archive study."

"And coincidentally encountered a monster."

"Yes."

Cassian's fingers tapped the desk slowly.

Too many coincidences.

First the Obelisk surge.

Now a distortion event.

And Arin Veyron present both times.

Cassian smiled slightly.

"Prepare a test."

"What kind of test?"

Cassian's voice remained calm.

"Send someone to scare him."

"Scare?"

"If he is simply clever, he will panic."

"And if he doesn't?"

Cassian's smile sharpened.

"Then he is dangerous."

Back in Arin's apartment, Elara was still staring at him.

"You're saying monsters will come from cracks in the sky."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Soon."

"How soon?"

Arin looked out the window.

"Four months."

She laughed softly.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"Then why tell me?"

"Because when it starts happening," Arin said calmly, "you'll remember this conversation."

Elara leaned forward slightly.

"Let's assume you're telling the truth."

"Alright."

"Why save me?"

Arin answered instantly.

"Because you are important."

Her eyebrow lifted.

"Important how?"

"You will awaken spatial magic."

"Impossible."

"Rare."

"Ridiculous."

"Essential."

She stared at him, trying to decide if he was insane or brilliant.

Then—

Knock.

Three slow taps on the door.

Arin's eyes moved toward it.

Too late for visitors.

Elara frowned.

"Are you expecting someone?"

"No."

Knock.

Three taps again.

Arin stood slowly.

His mind was already calculating.

Possibilities.

Random neighbor.

Academy messenger.

Cassian investigation.

Probability leaned strongly toward the third.

He opened the door.

A large man stood outside.

Tall. Heavy shoulders. Scar across his jaw.

Not academy staff.

Not noble servant.

A hired enforcer.

The man cracked his knuckles.

"You Arin Veyron?"

"Yes."

"Someone asked me to deliver a message."

Arin waited.

The man suddenly grabbed Arin's collar and slammed him against the wall outside.

Elara stood up instantly.

"Hey!"

The man ignored her.

His face moved close to Arin's.

"Stay away from things that don't concern you."

Ah.

Cassian's test.

Arin remained calm.

"You're being paid poorly."

The man blinked.

"…What?"

"For intimidation," Arin continued calmly, "you're using excessive force too early."

The man frowned.

"You think this is funny?"

"No."

Arin looked directly into his eyes.

"But I think you're about to regret it."

The man tightened his grip.

"Oh really?"

Arin pointed casually toward the street behind him.

"Three city guards are approaching."

The man glanced back instinctively.

There were no guards.

In that moment of distraction, Elara moved.

Her hand slammed into the man's wrist.

He released Arin instantly.

Elara stepped forward, eyes glowing faintly with unstable mana.

"You picked the wrong apartment."

The man looked between them.

Then spat on the ground.

"Whatever. Message delivered."

He walked away into the darkness.

Elara turned to Arin.

"You could have fought back earlier."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because intimidation isn't the real attack."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Arin closed the door quietly.

"Tests always come before assassination."

Elara stared at him.

"…Assassination?"

Arin returned to the table and picked up the compass.

The needle trembled again.

But not because of spatial distortion.

This time…

It reacted to something else.

Movement outside.

Multiple presences.

Arin sighed softly.

"Right on schedule."

Elara's voice tightened.

"What now?"

Arin looked toward the window.

Four shadows moved across the rooftop outside.

Cassian's "test" had escalated faster than expected.

He turned back to Elara calmly.

"Now we find out if fate wants me dead."

Outside…

The four shadows drew weapons.

And began moving toward the apartment.
