Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Training the Girl Who Could Break Space

Morning sunlight filtered through the cracked window of Arin's apartment.

The room still showed signs of the previous night's chaos.

Broken glass.

A missing chair.

A long crack across the ceiling where space had briefly twisted itself apart.

Elara Thorn stood in the center of the room staring at her hands.

"…So you're telling me I can literally tear reality?"

Arin closed the notebook he had been writing in.

"Yes."

"That sounds extremely dangerous."

"It is."

She looked at the spot where the chair had vanished.

"Where did it go?"

Arin shrugged slightly.

"Possibly nowhere."

Elara slowly turned toward him.

"That explanation is terrifying."

Arin stood and walked toward the window.

"Spatial magic manipulates the structure of space itself. Compression, expansion, folding, tearing."

She crossed her arms.

"And you just know all this?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Arin looked outside at the busy street below.

Because I watched you learn it the first time.

But he didn't say that.

Instead he answered calmly,

"I've studied rare ability classifications."

Elara didn't look convinced.

"Right."

She raised her hand cautiously.

The air around her fingers trembled slightly.

A faint ripple appeared.

Then disappeared.

She quickly lowered her hand.

"…I almost did it again."

"Good."

"Good?!"

"Yes."

She stared at him.

"You want me to tear holes in the world?"

"I want you to control it."

Elara walked across the room.

"And how exactly do I do that?"

Arin grabbed a coin from the table and placed it on the floor.

"Start small."

She frowned.

"That's your training method?"

"Yes."

"Explain."

"Move the coin."

Elara blinked.

"With space?"

"Yes."

"That sounds impossible."

Arin sat down calmly.

"Try."

She crouched beside the coin.

Closed her eyes.

Focused.

Nothing happened.

She opened one eye.

"…I feel stupid."

"Focus on the space under the coin."

She tried again.

The air trembled faintly.

Then—

The coin slid two centimeters across the floor.

Elara gasped.

"…Did you see that?"

"Yes."

"I moved it!"

"Yes."

"WITH SPACE."

"Yes."

She suddenly grinned.

"This is amazing."

Arin watched her quietly.

This was exactly how it had begun in the previous timeline.

Small movements.

Then larger distortions.

Then eventually…

Spatial blades capable of slicing monsters in half.

But last time, she had died before reaching that stage.

This time would be different.

Elara tried again.

The coin lifted slightly into the air.

Then dropped.

She clapped excitedly.

"Okay this is definitely real."

Arin nodded once.

"Continue practicing."

She gave him a suspicious look.

"You're way too calm about this."

"Power is a tool."

She pointed at the ceiling crack.

"That 'tool' almost deleted your apartment."

Arin looked up.

"Yes."

"You don't seem worried."

"I expected worse."

Elara stared at him.

"You really did see the future, didn't you?"

Arin didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

Across the city…

A black carriage rolled quietly through the noble district.

Inside sat a woman dressed in a dark cloak.

Her silver eyes stared calmly through the window.

Across from her sat a nervous man.

A city official.

"So… you're saying monsters might appear in the capital?"

The woman didn't look at him.

"I'm saying distortions are increasing."

"But that's impossible."

"Reality rarely cares about what you consider possible."

The official swallowed.

"And you're investigating this?"

"Yes."

"On whose authority?"

The woman finally looked at him.

Her eyes were cold.

"Authority beyond this city."

The man immediately fell silent.

She returned her attention to the window.

Her mind focused on a single name.

Arin Veyron.

The anomaly.

The variable.

The strategist who shouldn't exist in the timeline.

She whispered quietly,

"Interesting."

Back at the apartment…

Elara had now moved the coin several times.

Each attempt was slightly smoother.

Her excitement had turned into concentration.

Arin observed carefully.

Control was improving faster than expected.

Which meant something important.

Her power was stabilizing earlier than in the previous timeline.

Good.

Very good.

But it also meant she would attract attention sooner.

And attention was dangerous.

Suddenly—

The compass needle shook violently.

Arin stood instantly.

Elara noticed.

"That thing again?"

"Yes."

The needle spun rapidly.

Then pointed directly toward the city center.

Elara frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arin's expression darkened slightly.

"Another distortion."

"So another monster?"

"Possibly."

She stood immediately.

"Then we should stop it."

Arin grabbed his coat.

"That's the plan."

Elara blinked.

"…You're serious?"

"Yes."

"We barely survived the last one!"

"That one was accidental."

"And this one?"

Arin looked at the compass again.

"Not accidental."

They left the apartment quickly.

The compass needle continued shaking as they walked through the streets.

Market crowds.

Vendors shouting.

Children running.

None of them noticed the invisible pressure building in the air.

Elara whispered,

"Do you think the crack will appear here?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Arin pointed ahead.

"The distortion is moving."

They turned into a quieter district near the old library.

The compass needle suddenly stopped.

Arin froze.

Elara looked around.

"I don't see anything."

"Neither do I."

The air felt normal.

Too normal.

Arin slowly stepped forward.

Then—

A voice spoke behind them.

"You shouldn't be here."

Both of them turned instantly.

A woman stood at the end of the street.

Dark cloak.

Silver eyes.

Perfectly calm.

Elara whispered,

"Who is that?"

Arin recognized her immediately.

Not from this timeline.

From the previous one.

Raven Lyra.

A high-ranking agent of the hidden organization that monitored timeline stability.

And one of the most dangerous people Arin had ever encountered.

In the previous timeline…

She had killed him.

Her gaze moved between Arin and Elara.

"You two have been causing quite a disturbance."

Elara frowned.

"Excuse me?"

Raven ignored her.

Her eyes focused on Arin.

"You're the strategist."

Not a question.

A statement.

Arin remained calm.

"Who are you?"

Raven smiled faintly.

"Someone who keeps the world running correctly."

Elara whispered,

"That sounds ominous."

Raven continued,

"You prevented the Obelisk incident."

"You interfered with the factory distortion."

"And now you're standing exactly where the next one will appear."

Her smile widened slightly.

"Care to explain how you keep arriving at the right place?"

Arin looked at the compass in his hand.

Then back at her.

"Good intuition."

Raven tilted her head.

"I don't believe in intuition."

The air suddenly trembled.

A ripple appeared behind her.

Reality began splitting open again.

The distortion had arrived.

Raven glanced back casually.

"Ah."

A purple crack slowly opened in the air.

Elara stepped back.

"That thing again."

Arin watched Raven carefully.

She didn't look surprised.

Which confirmed something important.

She had expected the distortion.

Which meant the hidden organization wasn't just observing.

They were involved.

The crack widened.

Something moved inside.

Raven looked back at Arin.

"So tell me, strategist…"

Her eyes gleamed slightly.

"…what happens next?"

Arin answered calmly.

"A monster comes out."

"Correct."

"And then?"

"We kill it."

Raven's smile returned.

"Good."

Her hand moved toward the sword at her waist.

"Let's see if your predictions are always correct."

Behind her…

The crack split open.

And something enormous began pushing through.
