Chapter 16 - CHAPTER SIXTEEN: THE COUNTDOWN WAR

Time suddenly had a price.

And for Chinedu…

Every second now mattered.

Six weeks.

That was all he had.

Six weeks to prepare for the England Youth Trial.

Six weeks to prove he belonged on a global stage.

Six weeks to change his life forever.

Coach Adeyemi didn't waste a second.

"We start today," he said, voice firm. "No excuses. No distractions."

"I'm ready," Chinedu replied.

But deep down…

He knew readiness wasn't just physical.

Training Like War

The sessions became merciless.

Morning runs before sunrise.

Ball control under crushing pressure.

Tactical drills that demanded perfection.

Strength training that pushed his body to the edge.

Everything became sharper. Faster. Harder.

"You don't have time to be average!" Coach Adeyemi barked.

And Chinedu responded.

Even with the pain in his ankle…

He ran through it.

The Mind Evolves

At night, he studied.

European matches.

Elite midfielders.

Movement. Positioning. Decision-making.

Football was no longer just instinct.

It was intelligence.

And Chinedu was evolving.

No More Rivals

One afternoon, Tobi approached him—serious.

"I turned it down," he said.

"The France offer?"

Tobi nodded.

"Why?" Chinedu asked.

Tobi exhaled.

"Didn't feel right… and I'm not leaving like that."

Then he looked him in the eye.

"We finish what we started."

For the first time…

They weren't rivals.

They were brothers in battle.

The Price of Dreams

That night, Chinedu answered his uncle's call.

"I will help you," his uncle said.

"But you must stop chasing football."

Silence.

Then Chinedu spoke, voice steady:

"Then I will fail trying."

And he ended the call.

The First Sign

Days later—

Darkness swallowed the training pitch.

Lights out.

Confusion.

Then backup lights flickered on…

And revealed it.

The pitch—damaged.

Deliberately.

Coach Adeyemi's voice dropped.

"This is not an accident."

Chinedu's chest tightened.

It had begun.

The Threat

That night, a letter arrived.

No name. No signature.

Just one sentence:

"Withdraw the boy… or this gets worse."

Fear filled the room.

But Chinedu didn't flinch.

Fear Has a Face

The next night—

A car screeched to a halt beside him.

Two men stepped out.

"Get in."

"No."

"You're making a mistake."

And then—

Chinedu ran.

Through narrow streets.

Across gutters.

Past shadows.

Heart pounding. Legs burning.

He didn't stop…

Until the noise disappeared.

The Decision

"This is intimidation," Sarah said.

"We go to the authorities," Coach Adeyemi added.

Silence.

Then Chinedu spoke.

"I'm not backing out."

They looked at him.

"I've come too far."

His voice was calm.

Unshaken.

"They won't scare me away."

Five Weeks Left

The countdown continued.

Five weeks.

The danger grew.

The pressure intensified.

But Chinedu?

He changed.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Unbreakable.

Somewhere in the Dark

Fernandez watched quietly.

Reports were spreading.

Eyes were turning.

His jaw tightened.

"Then we end this."

FINAL MOMENT (DISPENSE 🔥)

Back on the pitch, Chinedu stood alone.

Ball at his feet.

Sweat on his skin.

Fire in his eyes.

The wind blew softly…

But something heavy lingered in the air.

A storm.

Not just of football.

But of war.

Chinedu took a step forward.

And whispered—

"Let them come."
