Chapter 4 - Chapter 5: The City of Hidden Shadows

Eldra City had always seemed ordinary to Arin. The hum of traffic, the chatter of cafes, the flickering neon signs—all comforting in their routine. But now, stepping through the hidden gate into the streets, he saw it differently. The shadows weren't confined to alleys anymore; they slithered invisibly through crowds, riding the edges of perception, waiting to strike.

Kaela led the group, eyes sharp. "We stick together. The shadows are clever—they'll try to blend in. Watch every movement, every face."

Nico grinned, fire orb spinning lazily above his palm. "Great. I've always wanted to punch ghosts in a crowd."

Arin adjusted the seed in his pocket. It hummed faintly, resonating with his heartbeat. Something had changed. The city felt… alive, in a way it hadn't before. The Veil's energy pulsed faintly beneath the asphalt, through the sewer grates, even in the lamplight. The shadows were everywhere, but the Veil was too—and it was guiding him.

Their first stop was a forgotten part of the city—the old railway station, abandoned for decades. Sylith had warned them this was a hotspot for shadow activity.

As they entered the station, the air thickened with a black mist. Shapes darted from the corners, moving faster than sight, forming shadowy duplicates of people long gone. The children froze, trying to differentiate real from illusion.

"Remember," Sylith's voice rang in their minds, "shadows feed on fear. Focus your energy, and the Veil will protect you."

Arin stepped forward, letting the seed glow brighter. A sphere of golden light formed, illuminating the station. The shadows hissed and recoiled, but one large figure lunged at Kaela. Without thinking, Arin thrust his hand, and a beam of pure light struck the creature. It screamed—an unearthly, echoing wail—and vanished into smoke.

Nico's fire orb streaked across the platform, melting another shadow into harmless mist. The children worked together, their magic weaving a net of light, pushing the shadows back inch by inch.

Finally, after a tense battle, the station was clear. The air was thick with energy, crackling faintly as if the city itself had exhaled. The children were exhausted, but victory was bittersweet.

Arin spotted something glinting on the platform—a small metallic emblem, etched with runes matching those in his notebook. Kaela picked it up. "This isn't just a trinket," she said. "This is a mark of the collaborator. Someone in the city is aiding the shadows."

Arin's heart thumped. His parents had warned him that humans could be corrupted. Could this person be connected to their disappearance?

They followed the trail through the winding streets, guided by the faint pulse of magic resonating from the emblem. Every corner, every alley, seemed to twist unnaturally. The shadows were watching, waiting for them to slip.

Then, at the edge of the old city library, they found him. A tall man cloaked in dark robes, eyes glowing faintly red, muttering incantations over a magical map of Eldra. The shadows swirled around him like obedient pets.

Kaela hissed, "That's him. That's the collaborator."

Arin stepped forward, hands glowing. "Stop. You won't harm the city or the Veil."

The man laughed, a sound cold and echoing. "The Veil belongs to no one. It belongs to power. And power… is mine for the taking."

The shadows surged, forming a massive wave that rushed toward the children. But Arin felt the Veil surge inside him, feeding his courage. He raised his hand, and the seed erupted in a blinding column of light, scattering the shadows like leaves in a storm.

Kaela, Nico, and the others followed suit, combining their magic into a massive, unified strike. The man screamed, dissipating into the mist, leaving only his map and the faint whisper of curses in the air.

Exhausted but victorious, the children regrouped. Arin looked at the city around them. The battle was won, but the war had only begun. Someone had already plotted against Eldra, and the shadows had allies in the human world.

Sylith appeared in a burst of golden light. "You've taken your first step above ground, Gifted. But the threat grows. Shadows are patient, clever, and relentless. You must uncover the collaborator's identity and stop them before the Veil fractures entirely."

Arin clenched his fists. "We will. Whatever it takes."

The streets of Eldra City seemed quiet again, but Arin knew better. The shadows were waiting. Watching. Planning. And now, so was he.
