Chapter 2 - Chapter 3: Shadows Over Eldra

The Underrealm had taught Arin more in a few days than he had ever imagined possible. His control over the seed's light had grown, his awareness of magic sharpened, and his bond with the creatures strengthening. Yet, nothing could prepare him for the warning Sylith had whispered that morning.

"The danger is not below," Sylith said, wings folded tight, "but above. The city thinks itself safe. It is not. Shadows have begun to breach the surface. You must learn quickly, for the Veil grows fragile where darkness gathers."

Arin's stomach twisted. He had thought the Underrealm itself was dangerous, but now the city—his home—was at risk.

Kaela led the group through a hidden exit from the Underrealm, a tunnel that opened into an alley no longer than a single car. Above, Eldra City seemed unchanged: traffic hum, children playing in the streets, and vendors shouting over the morning bustle. But the shadows were already here.

Arin noticed them first: flickers in the corner of his vision, like smoke curling unnaturally. Shapes that shouldn't exist—half-formed, misty, and darker than the darkest night—slithering along walls and alleyways.

"Keep calm," Kaela whispered. "The Veil will guide us."

Sylith appeared above them in a burst of golden light. "Form a circle. You will need each other's strength."

Arin extended his hand, letting the seed glow intensely. Light rippled outward, pushing back against the misty shapes. The shadows hissed and writhed, but the children held firm. The first battle above ground had begun.

The shadows moved fast, faster than the eye could track. One lunged at Kaela, its elongated claws slashing through the air. Arin's sphere of light struck it mid-flight, scattering it into a puff of harmless black smoke. Another shadow split into three smaller forms, darting toward the group.

"Focus!" Kaela shouted. "Remember the Veil!"

Arin did. He could feel it pulsing inside him, guiding his hands. Sparks flew from his seed like shooting stars. Each strike illuminated the alley, revealing glimpses of the shadows' true forms: creatures with hollow faces, sharp talons, and eyes that burned like embers.

One of the creatures broke through the circle, racing toward a nearby market stall. Arin lunged instinctively, casting a blinding wave of light. The shadow shrieked and vanished, leaving behind only a ripple in the air, as if reality itself had been disturbed.

After what felt like hours, the shadows receded, slipping back into the corners and cracks of the city. The children were exhausted, their hands glowing faintly with residual magic, lungs heaving. Arin sank against a wall, watching the alley. The city above remained oblivious, unaware of the battle that had just raged in its streets.

Sylith hovered down, eyes like molten opal. "This is only the beginning. Shadows are learning. They grow clever, and soon they will no longer attack openly. They will strike from within, hiding among humans. You must discover the weakness in their ranks, or the Veil will fracture entirely."

Arin clenched his fists. "How do we stop them?"

Sylith's gaze was solemn. "You cannot. Not yet. You can only protect what you can reach, fight what you can see, and trust in your own light. Shadows thrive on fear. You cannot let them feed."

That night, back in the Underrealm, the Gifted gathered around a glowing crystal pool, reflecting the light of their own magic. The tension between them had shifted; the shared experience above ground had forged an unspoken bond. Even Kaela, who had been skeptical of Arin, nodded at him, respect glimmering in her violet eyes.

A boy with the orb of fire—Nico—grinned tiredly. "You're not half bad, newbie."

Arin smiled faintly. "Thanks… I guess."

Sylith landed gracefully on the edge of the pool. "Rest. Tomorrow we will explore the Veil's deeper secrets. The source of the shadows may lie hidden beneath the city you call home. What you find may change everything."

Arin's mind raced. Secrets beneath Eldra City? Hidden dangers above ground? He felt the weight of responsibility pressing down on him, heavier than any shadow he had faced. Yet, despite the fear, excitement burned inside him. This was the path he had chosen—or the Veil had chosen for him—and he would see it through.

Somewhere far above, in the quiet corners of Eldra City, a pair of glowing eyes watched from the rooftops. Shadows whispered in the wind, plotting, waiting. And now, the game had truly begun.
