Chapter 22 - Chapter21: The Neutral Shore (2045)

Tagline: The final meeting of the Countryment.

Isha's POV: The Sunset

The Bosphorus hadn't changed. The water was still a deep, bruised blue, and the gulls still circled the Galata Tower. I sat on the same stone bench in Istanbul, my hands age-spotted but steady.

A shadow fell over me. I didn't have to look up. I knew the scent—sandalwood and the faint, lingering smell of mountain pine.

Adil sat down beside me. He moved with a slight limp, a souvenir from the Ravuta Ridge, but his eyes were the same amber-flecked windows to a soul I had known for forty years.

"You're late, Major," I whispered, leaning my head on his shoulder.

"The border was closed, Isha," he replied, his voice a gravelly, beautiful rasp. "It took me a lifetime to cross it."

We sat in silence as the sun dipped below the horizon, turning the city into a silhouette of minarets and bridges. We didn't talk about the wars we had survived or the families we had protected. We talked about Zoya and Hamza. We talked about the garden in Lahore and the bungalow in Ambala.

"We did it," Adil said, taking my hand. His skin was rough, a soldier's hand, but his grip was the gentlest thing I had ever felt. "We stayed human."

"We stayed Countrymen," I corrected him.

As the lights of Istanbul flickered on, two old souls watched the bridge. For the first time in their lives, there were no uniforms, no sensors, and no flags. There was only the light.
