Chapter 23 - One of the Sources

Behind the false wall was a huge hall. Demons made way as Corvus, Mazikean, and other high-level demons walked over.

The sea of people closed behind them as they walked. Soon they go to the front of the crowd.

"I present to you Corvus the Source," Mazikean announced and the crowd buzzed as they murmured.

Corvus stepped forward and the crowd fell silent.

"I understand you are confused, why won't you be. The other two claiming to be the source are frauds," Corvus said but a few of the lower-level demons still murmured.

Corvus put his arm out he focused and ignited a white spark. The spark grew into the size of a soccer ball.

"An energy ball," one of the demons whispered.

"That's one of the powers of the source," another whispered. The demon crowd got on their knees in unison.

Corvus gestured at Mazikean, and she came closer.

"I found a dark priest in Maddock," he whispered into her ear. She walked away with the other high-level demons.

"Mazikean, what about the hunters," one of the high-level demons asked as they walked out.

"Zax and Festus the two of you will come with me to North Dakota. The rest of you should continue hunting the hunters," Mazikean said.

Zax and Festus and the rest dispersed. They drove to the airport. There were two men waiting to escort them to their plane.

"Section Eight?" one of the men asked and Mazikean nodded. They were escorted to a private jet.

Meanwhile, Mark and Nathan had just crossed state lines. They had been driving for hours and were now in Missouri.

They stopped at a diner to get something to eat. They got in and sat at a table. Nathan prayed no one would recognize them. He hid behind the menu.

"Calm down, the bolo is not public. It's only for police and other security agencies," Mark explained.

"Not yet, soon our faces will be all over the news," Nathan put down the menu and said.

"Can I get a cup of coffee?" Mark asked

"I'll have a cup of coffee, bacon, eggs, and pie," Nathan said.

"Scrambled, I'd like the egg scrambled," Nathan said when the waitress was walking away.

The look on her face made him add please. After they had their meal the waitress brought them the bill.

Nathan took out his black card and swiped.

"Sir, your card was declined," the waitress said. Nathan swiped again and it declined.

"No, that can be right. Are you sure your machine is working?" Nathan asked and Mark offered to pay but he turned him down.

Nathan took another card and swiped but it was also declined. Nathan let out an awkward laugh.

"I'll give you time to sort it out," the waitress said and walked away.

Minutes later another waitress walked to their table. Mark handed a number of notes to her but she did not take them.

"Mr Payne?" she asked and Nathan looked up at her.

"You have a call," she said and led him to a landline.

He picked up the receiver, he said hello and immediately recognized the voice on the other end of the call.

It was Jane.

"What did you do now? I thought I told you to stop hunting. I am getting word that hunters are dying all over the country," Jane said.

"I stopped hunting as you suggested. Now I am being hunted," Nathan replied.

"Go to the motel on Route 66 and stay there. I'll meet you there," Jane said and hung up.

"Who was that?" Mark asked.

"Jane, she said to go to a motel on Route 66," Nathan informed him.

"Ooh, I guess she paid for our meal," Mark said.

The two got back in the car and headed to the motel.
