Chapter 33: When the Earth Listens
Lena Adua stepped toward the circle slowly.
Unlike Kairo's confident stride or Amara's steady march, Lena moved with a quiet calm that almost looked hesitant—but those who knew her understood it wasn't hesitation.
It was patience.
The kind that came from someone used to listening before acting.
The moment she entered the circle, the etched markings beneath her feet began to glow again.
A faint pressure rolled outward across the arena.
The students felt it immediately.
But this time the feeling was different.
Heavier.
Not sharp like metal.
Not wild like the Owase beast spirit.
It felt… grounded.
As if the air itself had grown thicker.
Lena stood in the center and placed one hand lightly against the stone floor.
Her eyes closed.
Master Ilyara watched carefully.
"Let the earth answer you," she said quietly.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Some of the students shifted awkwardly.
Then the ground trembled.
It was small.
Barely noticeable at first.
But the vibration grew stronger.
Tiny cracks appeared in the dust covering the arena floor, spreading outward from Lena's fingertips.
Bram leaned forward from the sidelines.
"There it is," he murmured.
The earth answered.
A low rumble echoed beneath the arena as the soil below the stone circle began to shift.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
With a soft cracking sound, a thick vine burst through one of the narrow seams in the stone.
Gasps rose from the students.
Another vine followed.
And another.
The plants twisted upward, growing rapidly under Lena's control. Within seconds, several thick roots coiled around the edges of the arena like living ropes.
Lena raised her hand slowly.
The vines moved with it.
One of them shot forward suddenly and wrapped around a wooden training post, crushing the wood with a loud crack before releasing it again.
The students murmured louder now.
"That's strong," Jaro said.
Kairo nodded slightly.
"Very strong."
Inside the circle, Lena inhaled deeply.
Her connection to the ground deepened.
More roots stirred beneath the arena.
The soil shifted visibly now, small ripples spreading outward across the dirt surrounding the stone floor.
Aren felt it too.
Not just the movement.
But something deeper.
The spirits tied to the earth.
They stirred faintly in response to Lena's call.
For a brief moment, the whispers in Aren's mind reacted again.
Not warnings.
Not excitement.
Recognition.
They understood this power.
Master Ilyara stepped closer.
"That is enough," she said calmly.
Lena opened her eyes.
The vines immediately relaxed, sinking slowly back into the ground as the pressure in the arena faded.
Within seconds, the stone circle looked untouched again.
As if the earth had swallowed its own movement.
Lena stepped out of the circle, brushing dust from her hands.
Master Ilyara turned toward the watching students.
"Lena Adua."
She paused briefly.
"You have reached the stage of Awakened."
A few students clapped quietly.
Lena gave a small nod, her usual calm expression returning as she joined the others.
Bram stepped forward next.
"Guess it's my turn," he muttered.
The arena stirred with anticipation again.
But as the Adua student entered the circle, Aren barely noticed.
Because the whispers inside his mind had grown slightly louder.
Not chaotic.
Not overwhelming.
Just… closer.
Like distant figures slowly stepping out of a fog.
Aren frowned slightly.
Something about this trial was stirring them more and more.
And deep down, he had the strange feeling that when his turn finally came…
They wouldn't stay quiet anymore.
