Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The King

The heartbeat below shook dust from the vaulted ceilings.

Once.

Twice.

The Vampire King was accelerating his awakening.

James didn't hesitate.

"Not today."

He sprinted back toward the chamber of seven coffins, boots cracking stone as his enhanced Agility pushed him into a blur.

The Chamber of Regents

Six coffins remained sealed.

Hairline fractures glowed faint crimson along their edges. Mana seeped out in slow, ancient pulses.

Inside each rested a Level 25 Regent Vampire ... half-awake. Vulnerable.

James didn't give them the courtesy of a full resurrection.

He slid to the first coffin.

Rift energy gathered in his palm.

He ripped the lid open.

A pale face stirred, eyes barely forming.

James drove his hand straight through the chest.

RIFT PULL — INTERNAL COLLAPSE .

The vampire imploded before its scream fully formed.

Ash.

Core.

He moved like a machine.

Second coffin.

Snap. Core extracted.

Third.

Mana flared weakly. Too slow.

Fourth.

A hand reached out

James severed it and crushed the skull mid-rise.

Fifth.

Sixth.

In under three minutes, the chamber was silent.

Six ancient regents reduced to drifting dust.

Six Regent-Grade Mana Cores floated before him, glowing deep crimson.

Each one radiated dense, refined mana far superior to anything he'd consumed before.

James didn't hesitate.

He crushed the first core in his palm and absorbed it.

SYSTEM ALERT

Regent-Grade Mana Core absorbed.

400 Stat Points

Massive EXP

One after another he consumed them.

Mana flooded his pathways violently. Veins glowed beneath his skin.

The pressure nearly forced him to his knees.

Level notifications cascaded.

LEVEL UP

Level 24 TO 25 TO 26 TO 27

When the storm settled, James stood in the ruined coffin chamber, breathing slowly.

The air felt lighter.

Or maybe he had simply grown heavier with power.

The dungeon trembled again.

This time the tremor stopped halfway.

As if something below had… paused.

Watching.

Evaluating.

SECOND STAGE — AWAKENED EVOLUTION UNLOCKED

At Level 25, something inside James had shifted.

Now at Level 27, the transformation finalized.

Black-silver energy spiraled around his body.

His shadow detached slightly from his feet.

The system interface flickered.

AWAKENED ABILITY — Stage Two: Rift Sovereign (Partial Manifestation)

Passive Enhancements:

Mana flows instinctively around his muscles, increasing physical output by 20% without active channeling.

Rift affinity increases spatial distortion resistance.

Minor regeneration when surrounded by high mana density.

Active Evolutions:

1. RIFT PULL — PRECISION VARIANT

Can now target internal organs or mana circuits directly if contact is made.

2. RIFT STEP → RIFT BLINK (Enhanced)

Short-range teleport now leaves afterimage distortion for 0.5 seconds, confusing enemy perception.

3. RIFT COMPRESSION

Can compress mana into limbs to temporarily double striking force for 3 seconds.

4. RIFT FIELD (New)

Creates a 5-meter distortion zone.

Enemies inside experience delayed movement response and mild spatial drag.

New Ability Unlocked:

5. RIFT REND

A tearing slash that fractures space in a straight line up to 15 meters.

High mana cost.

Potentially lethal if clean hit lands.

James flexed his fingers.

Space slightly bent around them.

The dungeon's mana responded to him now... like it recognized him.

Below

A deep, resonant voice echoed faintly through the stone.

"You slaughter my court…"

The air grew heavier.

Colder.

The true sovereign of this tomb was nearly awake.

James rolled his shoulders.

Level 27.

Six regents dead.

Pockets filled with cores.

New power thrumming in his veins.

He looked toward the descending stairwell once more.

"…Guess I'm not running anymore."

The final coffin at the far end of the chamber trembled.

Not opening.

Just… reacting.

And beneath seven chambers of stone

The Level 30 Vampire King opened his eyes fully.

The tremor stopped.

Silence swallowed the chamber.

Then

Thunder detonated across the sky.

Outside the ruined castle, black clouds spiraled unnaturally fast, forming a vortex above the highest spire. Lightning struck in rapid succession, each bolt tinted deep crimson as if the storm itself bled.

The castle windows exploded inward.

Wind howled through the halls.

James turned slowly toward the stairwell leading to the deepest chamber.

A voice rolled upward like a tidal wave of ancient hatred.

"Who dares… butcher my bloodline?"

The ground split.

Stone cracked apart as a pillar of dark crimson mana erupted from below, blasting through every floor of the castle in a single vertical beam. The shockwave lifted James off his feet.

From within the ascending torrent of blood-red energy

A figure rose.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Cloak unfurling like living shadow.

Long silver-white hair drifting in the storm wind.

Eyes glowing molten scarlet.

Pale, aristocratic face carved with cruel perfection.

He hovered midair as lightning framed him in violent flashes.

Drelhuth lowered to the shattered floor.

His boots touched stone.

The storm intensified.

He inhaled deeply.

"Human blood…"

His gaze snapped to James.

"…fresh."

The temperature dropped sharply.

Drelhuth tilted his head slightly, studying him like an insect.

"You slaughtered my regents."

James didn't answer.

He raised his guard.

The king smiled.

And vanished.

James barely crossed his arms in time.

A blur of crimson struck him.

The impact detonated like a missile.

The courtyard wall shattered as James was launched Backward through one wall, then another, then another... each collision reducing ancient stone to powder.

He blasted through the final exterior wall and crashed into the central courtyard before the castle gates.

The shockwave split the cobblestones.

James rolled, carving a trench twenty meters long before finally stopping.

His arms throbbed violently.

But they hadn't broken.

He had blocked it.

Footsteps echoed from the ruined castle interior.

Unhurried.

Mocking.

Drelhuth walked through the debris field as though strolling through a garden.

"Impressive," he said casually. "Most humans would have liquefied."

James forced himself upright.

His forearms smoked faintly from the impact.

Drelhuth's eyes glowed brighter.

"You are still human filth."

His voice sharpened, dripping with disdain.

"Short-lived. Fragile. Loud creatures who breed endlessly and call it civilization."

Lightning struck behind him.

"You build kingdoms that crumble in centuries."

He spread his arms theatrically.

"I have watched empires rise and rot while my kind endured."

His smile twisted cruelly.

"And now you scurry through my tomb wearing rags, pretending you are something more than livestock."

James wiped blood from his lip.

"You talk too much."

The king laughed.

"Oh, I will break that spirit."

His gaze darkened.

"I enjoy it, you see. The way humans resist at first. The defiance. The bravado."

He stepped forward.

"Then the screams."

Another step.

"Then the begging."

His tongue ran slowly across his fangs.

"And finally… silence."

The air around him ignited in crimson aura.

Blood Rage activated.

His aura exploded outward.

Stone around him liquefied.

BLOOD RAGE ACTIVE

Level: 35

All stats recalibrated — 700 average

Physical immunity engaged

Drelhuth disappeared again.

This time James activated Rift Field instinctively.

Space warped outward five meters.

The king reappeared inside it

But slowed.

Just slightly.

James lunged with Rift Compression surging through his arms and slashed across the king's chest.

The blade struck.

And bounced.

Not even a mark.

Drelhuth's fist slammed into James' ribs.

The crack was audible.

James flew again... this time skidding across the courtyard rather than through walls.

He barely regained footing before a kick hammered into his side, sending him airborne again.

Drelhuth was overwhelming.

Faster.

Stronger.

More experienced.

James blinked behind him

Elbow smashed into his jaw mid-teleport.

The king had read it.

James crashed face-first into stone.

Drelhuth grabbed him by the throat and lifted him easily.

"You rely on tricks," the king said softly.

He slammed James into the ground.

"And tricks do not save cattle."

James rolled desperately as a downward stomp shattered the spot where his head had been.

The fight turned brutal.

James landed glancing blows enhanced with mana compression.. but each strike felt like hitting reinforced steel.

Meanwhile.

Every hit from Drelhuth fractured stone and sent shockwaves through James' body.

The king maintained the upper hand effortlessly.

He circled James like a predator.

"You are stronger than my regents," he admitted.

Then his eyes gleamed.

"But you are still prey."

He vanished once more

Appearing above James midair

And drove a crimson-charged fist downward.

James crossed his arms again

Impact.

The courtyard cratered.

Dust engulfed everything.

When it cleared

James was on one knee.

Breathing heavy.

Arms shaking.

Drelhuth stood untouched.

Perfect.

Elegant.

Smiling.

"You will make a delightful ruin," the vampire king said softly.

And for the first time since entering the dungeon

James felt the genuine weight of a superior opponent pressing him toward defeat.
