Chapter 16 - Chapter 16:FALL OF REGENT

James' arms trembled not from weakness, but from effort.

Mana surged through his shoulders and biceps in thick, luminous veins of force. The ruined hall around them shook as fractured stone gave way beneath their combined strength. Broken portraits of long-dead nobles shattered under their thrashing bodies.

Alexsandr's aristocratic composure was gone.

The elegant regent who had risen from his coffin with theatrical grace now clawed desperately at James' forearms. His pale face contorted, refined accent cracking as panic bled through.

"W–wait... human... listen... Let me tell you something LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING!!! !"

James tightened the bear hug.

Bone creaked.

"Didn't you say," James hissed through bloodied teeth, "you were going to enjoy breaking me?"

Alexsandr's eyes widened.

Mana flared violently from the vampire's body as he attempted to reinforce himself, muscle density increasing, undead vitality hardening his frame but James' boosted Strength stat overwhelmed the defense. Two hundred fresh points had shifted the balance brutally in his favor.

Crack.

A rib gave way.

Alexsandr screamed.

For the first time in a millennium, true fear flooded the regent's undead mind.

Meanwhile. The Outside World

Dungeon Progress Across the Globe

Across the fractured remains of civilization, humanity struggled.

Most awakened civilians had only managed to clear first-floor dungeons in their respective regions. Goblin nests. Kobold warrens. Basic undead crypts.

No one had publicly documented entry into the Six-Fold Descent dungeon.

It was a single-entry dungeon, one person allowed at a time. A design anomaly.

Governments worldwide classified it as a Red-Tier Isolation Zone.

Government Scientific Divisions

In fortified facilities across the surviving superpowers, research teams analyzed dungeon phenomena:

Dungeons varied in biome

Creature types ranged from low fantasy to nightmare-tier entities

Environmental physics often partially obeyed Earth rules but not fully

Mana density directly correlated to dungeon depth

Large-scale awakened registration programs were underway.

Some nations successfully formed:

Tier-1 Assault Squads

Mana Research Corps

Government-Controlled Dungeon Expeditions

Safe-return dungeons typically contained:

Goblins

Orcs

Kobolds

Most were 1–2 floors maximum.

Return rate: 62%.

Anything deeper? Casualty rate spiked above 85%.

Lost Regions

Entire continents and regions had fallen.

Large portions of Australia

Vast swaths of South America

Several regions across central and southern Africa

Overrun by creatures resembling those from high-fantasy mythologies:

Wyverns

Troll warbands

Lich-controlled undead legions

Demon-kin fortresses

Satellite imagery showed mana storms raging permanently over these zones.

Humanity had drawn lines.

And prayed those lines held.

BACK TO THE RUINED CASTLE HALL

Alexsandr's struggles weakened.

His elegant coat tore under the pressure. Undead flesh dented under crushing force.

"Stop... !" he gasped. "You don't understand what you're doing! If you kill me "

Crack.

Another rib.

James leaned closer, eyes cold.

"I understand perfectly."

Alexsandr's thrashing turned frantic.

"Please! I can teach you! Power beyond your pathetic system! The King, he will awaken! You will not survive him!"

James' grip tightened further.

Mana flooded his arms again.

"You should've finished me when you had the chance."

Alexsandr's voice broke into raw terror.

"WAIT! I submit! I swear fealty !"

James smiled faintly.

"Too late."

He channeled everything, raw Strength, controlled mana compression, physical leverage.

With a final roar

CRRRRAAAAACK.

Alexsandr's reinforced undead spine snapped.

The regent's body convulsed violently.

James didn't release.

He squeezed harder.

Bone fragments punctured outward.

Mana circuits inside the vampire destabilized.

Alexsandr's eyes bulged.

"No !"

James twisted.

A wet, catastrophic pop echoed through the hall.

The regent's torso ruptured under the pressure, mana imploding in a violent backlash that shattered every window in the chamber.

Silence followed.

Only dust drifting through moonlight.

James released what remained of Alexsandr.

The once-aristocratic vampire lay broken beyond recovery, undead vitality flickering like a dying candle.

A final whisper escaped him.

"…impossible…"

His body crumbled into ash.

James staggered as waves of energy surged through him.

Stat points gained.

Mana capacity expanded.

Awakened pathways deepened.

He stood in the ruined hall, chest heaving.

But something else shifted.

Deep below.

In the seventh chamber.

A pulse.

Ancient.

Hungry.

The Vampire King had felt the death of his regent.

And he was waking faster now.

James looked toward the descending stairwell.

"…I need to leave."

But even as he said it

A distant, thunderous heartbeat echoed through the stone.

Once.

Twice.

The dungeon itself seemed to inhale.

And far beneath him, something smiled in the dark.
