Chapter 3 - The Plant That Knew Her Heart

In a small, quiet village surrounded by dry fields and narrow dusty roads, lived a woman named Suman.

Two years ago, her husband had died unexpectedly, leaving her alone with two young children—a son of ten and a daughter of seven. Life had not been kind to her since then. Every day was a struggle. Every night was filled with silent worries.

But Suman never complained.

She was poor, yes—but she was honest, kind, and strong in a way that people rarely noticed.

To survive, she worked as a gardener in the houses of the wealthy people in the nearby town. From early morning until sunset, she trimmed plants, watered flowers, and cared for gardens that weren't her own.

She loved plants.

To her, they weren't just leaves and soil—they were alive, silent companions who understood patience.

But no matter how hard she worked, the money was never enough.

Her children often studied under a dim lamp, sharing old books and worn-out notebooks. Suman watched them quietly, her heart aching.

"I wish I could give them more," she would whisper to herself.

One evening, after finishing her work, Suman took a different path home. The sky was turning orange, and a cool wind moved gently through the trees.

As she walked, she noticed something unusual.

Near the edge of an abandoned field, a small glowing plant caught her attention.

It wasn't like any plant she had seen before.

Its leaves shimmered faintly, almost as if they were breathing light.

Suman frowned.

"Strange…" she murmured.

She stepped closer.

And then—

"Don't touch me."

Suman froze.

Her heart nearly stopped.

She looked around quickly.

No one was there.

"W-who said that?" she whispered, her voice shaking.

"I did."

The voice was soft, calm… but clear.

Her eyes slowly turned back toward the plant.

It… moved.

Not in the way normal plants do with the wind—but slightly, as if it was aware of her.

Suman stumbled back in fear.

"This… this is not possible," she said.

The plant's leaves glowed brighter.

"I know you are afraid," it said. "But I will not harm you."

Suman's breathing was fast now. Her mind raced with confusion and fear.

"What are you?" she asked.

"I am not meant for everyone," the plant replied. "I appear only to those whose hearts are honest, kind, and patient."

Suman stared at it, unable to move.

"I have been waiting," the plant continued softly. "For someone like you."

Suman didn't trust it.

Not at first.

But something about the voice didn't feel dangerous.

It felt… calm.

"Why me?" she asked slowly.

"Because you give without expecting," the plant said. "Because even in your struggle, you do not cheat, you do not harm, and you do not lose kindness."

Suman's eyes filled slightly.

No one had ever noticed that.

The plant's leaves shimmered again.

"If you take care of me," it said, "I will take care of your needs."

Her heart skipped a beat.

"What do you mean?"

"Pluck one leaf from me each day," the plant explained. "And it will turn into money."

Suman stared in disbelief.

Money?

It sounded impossible.

A trick.

A dream.

But before she could speak, the plant's voice turned serious.

"Listen carefully," it warned. "Only one leaf each day. No more."

"Why?" Suman asked.

"If you take more than one leaf in a day," the plant said slowly, "I will lose my power… and become an ordinary plant forever."

Silence filled the air.

Suman's mind was filled with thoughts.

Money meant her children could study properly. They could eat better. They could live a better life.

But the warning echoed in her mind.

Only one leaf.

She nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"And remember," the plant added gently, "I help only those who remain honest."

The next morning, with trembling hands, Suman returned.

She hesitated for a moment… then carefully plucked one leaf.

The moment it left the plant—

It transformed into a crisp note of money in her hand.

Suman gasped.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Thank you… thank you," she whispered, looking up at the sky.

For the first time in years, she felt hope.

Days passed.

Every morning, she took one leaf.

And every day, her life slowly improved.

Her children began studying with new books. There was food in the house. The stress on her face began to fade.

But something else began to grow.

A thought.

A quiet, dangerous thought.

What if one more leaf won't matter?

She ignored it.

At first.

But the thought returned again and again.

You have struggled so much… don't you deserve more?

One extra leaf could change everything faster…

One evening, as she stood before the plant,

her hand hovered over it.

Two leaves.

So close.

Her heart raced.

No one would know.

The plant was silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

Suman closed her eyes tightly.

"No," she whispered, pulling her hand back. "I promised."

The moment she stepped away, the wind moved gently through the leaves—as if the plant had sighed in relief.

That night, Suman couldn't sleep.

The thought of taking more still lingered.

But another thought replaced it.

What if I lose everything?

She realized something important.

Greed doesn't come loudly.

It comes quietly… like a suggestion.

And if she listened once—

She might lose the very miracle that saved her.

The next morning, Suman returned calmly.

She plucked only one leaf.

As always.

And smiled.

Because this time, she didn't just choose money.

She chose control.

As she walked back home, something strange happened.

She felt the presence of the plant even when she was far away.

And a soft voice echoed in her mind:

"You have passed the first test."

Suman stopped.

Her heart skipped.

First test?

She slowly turned back toward the distant field.

The plant stood quietly… glowing faintly in the morning light.

And for the first time—

Suman realized—

This was not just a blessing.

It was something more.

Something mysterious.

Something that had only just begun.
