Chapter 25 - The Invitation

Chapter 25

A letter.

It arrives at night.

Not through the front gates.

Not through security.

It's placed on her vanity.

Inside her private room.

No cameras triggered.

No guards alerted.

That alone chills the estate.

Ren sees it first.

Black envelope.

Crimson wax.

Her name written in elegant ink:

Reina Takahashi.

Not "Mrs."

Not "Bride."

Just her.

Inside is a single card.

Minimal.

Clean.

You are wasted behind him.

You think strategically.

You calculate before you react.

You understand leverage.

Ren leads with instinct.

You lead with foresight.

We should speak.

Tomorrow.

8:00 PM.

Hoshinoya Rooftop Garden.

Come alone.

— Kuroda

There's no threat written.

That makes it worse.

The room feels like it might shatter.

Ren doesn't yell.

He doesn't break anything.

He simply folds the card in half.

Then again.

Then again.

Controlled destruction.

"You are not going."

It's absolute.

Reina watches him carefully.

"He got into our estate."

"Yes."

"That's the bigger problem."

His eyes flash.

"The bigger problem is that he thinks he can summon you."

She steps closer.

"He didn't summon me."

He goes still.

She lifts her chin slightly.

"He invited me."

The difference lands.

Hard.

He steps toward her slowly.

"You think this is a debate?"

"No."

"Then why are we discussing it?"

"Because you don't understand what he's doing."

His voice drops.

"Enlighten me."

"He's testing loyalty. Not yours."

Silence.

"Mine."

That realization shifts something in him.

She continues:

"If I don't go, he confirms I'm protected property."

"If you go, you confirm you can be lured."

Her eyes soften slightly.

"Not if I control the meeting."

He grips her wrist—not painfully, but firmly.

"You are not bait."

She doesn't pull away.

"And I am not fragile."

Their faces are inches apart now.

Breath mixing.

Tension sharp.

He lowers his voice:

"If you walk into his space, I will tear down the city to get you back."

Her pulse stutters.

"I'm not walking into his space," she whispers.

"I'm walking onto his board."

Hayato later confirms:

The rooftop garden is public.

But privately rented tomorrow night.

Under a shell corporation.

Linked to Kuroda.

It's not a trap in the traditional sense.

It's psychological.

Later that night, Ren stands on the balcony.

Watching the city lights.

Reina steps beside him.

Quiet.

He doesn't look at her.

"If you go," he says finally, "I will be there."

"Then he wins."

Silence.

His jaw tightens.

"What do you want?"

She looks out over the city.

"I want him to realize he misjudged me."

He turns to her then.

"And what if he didn't?"

That's the first time uncertainty flickers in her eyes.

And he sees it.

Which makes him step closer.

Hand at her waist.

Pulling her gently against him.

"You don't need to prove anything."

She rests her hand over his chest.

"I need to prove it to myself."

And that?

That unsettles him more than Kuroda ever could.

The next day.

8:00 PM.

The rooftop garden of the Hoshinoya complex glows under soft lantern light.

Minimal guests.

Private reservation.

Wind brushing gently against silk banners.

Reina arrives in a simple black dress.

No dramatic entrance.

No visible security.

No Ren.

From the outside?

She looks exactly like what Kuroda expects.

Alone.

Three buildings away:

Hayato's team monitors rooftops.

Thermal scopes active.

Signal jammers calibrated but dormant.

Two plainclothes guards blend in as hotel staff.

Ren watches from a secured vehicle below.

He hates this.

But he trusts her plan.

Barely.

Kuroda is already waiting.

Back turned.

Hands clasped behind him.

He doesn't turn when she approaches.

"I'm impressed."

She stops a measured distance away.

"You expected me to refuse."

"I expected him to forbid you."

She says nothing.

That silence confirms more than words.

He finally turns.

His eyes sweep over her.

Assessing.

Not leering.

Calculating.

"You came alone."

She meets his gaze steadily.

"I came."

A faint smile curves his lips.

"Dangerous."

"For who?"

The wind lifts a strand of her hair.

Neither looks away.

Kuroda gestures to the table set between them.

Tea prepared.

Two cups.

Untouched.

"I underestimated you," he says smoothly.

"You mistake that for weakness."

He tilts his head.

"You stabilized Ren's internal fractures. You redirected his retaliation patterns. You prevented impulsive war escalation."

Her eyes narrow slightly.

"You've been studying us closely."

"Of course."

He steps closer.

Still within public-acceptable distance.

"You don't belong beside him."

That's the first true provocation.

She doesn't flinch.

"I chose to stand beside him."

His gaze sharpens.

"That's worse."

Silence stretches.

Then he lowers his voice.

"You think you can civilize a dragon?"

She answers evenly:

"I think I can aim one."

That lands.

Hard.

For the first time, Kuroda's smile fades.

He leans slightly closer.

"Do you know why I invited you?"

"To measure me."

"No."

A pause.

"To offer you an alternative."

The air changes.

Not romantic.

Strategic.

"You're wasted as leverage," he continues.

"With me, you'd be architect. Not symbol."

There it is.

Not seduction.

Recruitment.

He's not trying to steal her body.

He's trying to steal her mind.

Her heart pounds.

Not from fear.

From realization.

He sees her value.

Separately from Ren.

That's dangerous validation.

But she answers calmly:

"You mistake independence for disloyalty."

Kuroda studies her.

"You're loyal because you love him?"

She doesn't answer.

He watches carefully.

"Or because you believe you can control him?"

That one hits.

And he sees it.

A flicker.

Small.

But there.

Before she can respond—

A faint movement on a neighboring rooftop.

Hayato's voice in her concealed earpiece:

"Three heat signatures behind him. Armed."

Her pulse steadies.

So that's the real test.

Kuroda watches her closely.

"You brought protection."

She smiles faintly.

"So did you."

Silence.

Then—

He laughs.

Soft.

Genuine.

"You're extraordinary."

He steps back.

Signals subtly.

The hidden men withdraw.

So do hers.

Unspoken agreement.

No blood tonight.

As she turns to leave, he says quietly:

"If he ever disappoints you…"

She doesn't stop walking.

"I'll disappoint you first."

He smiles at that.

Because he knows—

This war just became personal.

Ren sees her exit safely.

The tension in his body doesn't ease.

When she gets into the car, he doesn't speak immediately.

He studies her.

"Did he touch you?"

"No."

"Did he threaten you?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"He offered me power."

Ren's eyes darken.

"And?"

She turns to him fully.

"I already have it."

That's when something shifts in him.

Pride.

Possession.

Desire.

And fear.

Because now he understands—

Kuroda doesn't just want to defeat him.

He wants to divide them.

And tonight?

He learned he can't.
