Chapter 27
Night settles heavily over the abandoned shipyard.
Rusting cranes stretch like skeletons against the dark sky.
The smell of saltwater and metal hangs in the air.
Reina steps out of the car alone.
Cold wind brushes her hair across her face.
Behind her, the driver pulls away immediately.
Exactly as instructed.
From the outside, it looks like she came without protection.
But miles away, hidden in the darkness of the city, Ren's network is already moving.
Just not here.
Because Reina knows something Kuroda doesn't know she knows.
Tonight's real battle is at the port.
But first… she has to survive this.
A slow clap echoes through the shipyard.
Kuroda steps out from the shadows between stacked cargo containers.
Perfectly composed.
As if this were simply another business meeting.
"I was beginning to wonder if you'd lost your courage."
Reina doesn't stop walking until she's a few steps away.
"You know I didn't."
His eyes glint with interest.
"No guards."
"No weapons."
"No Takahashi."
She tilts her head slightly.
"You asked for a private conversation."
A faint smile touches his lips.
"Yes… I did."
He gestures toward one of the warehouses.
Two men drag Yumi outside.
Her wrists bound.
Her face pale.
The moment Yumi sees Reina, tears spill down her cheeks.
"Reina—!"
One guard forces her to her knees.
Reina's chest tightens, but her expression stays calm.
"You got what you wanted," she says quietly.
"Release her."
Kuroda studies her carefully.
"You still think you're negotiating."
He walks slowly around Reina.
Like a predator circling prey.
"You walked into my territory alone," he says softly.
"Did you think I wouldn't take advantage of that?"
Metal doors slam behind her.
Armed men step out from the shadows.
Ten.
Maybe more.
The trap closes.
Yumi begins crying harder.
"Reina, please—don't—"
Kuroda lifts a hand.
The guards fall silent.
Then he leans closer to Reina.
"You know what fascinates me most about you?"
She meets his gaze.
"You think five steps ahead."
He smiles faintly.
"But tonight… you walked straight into step one."
Her heart pounds.
But she doesn't panic.
Because she remembers what Yumi must have heard.
The shipment.
The port.
The real objective.
So she says quietly:
"You're moving weapons tonight."
For the first time—
Kuroda's smile fades.
A flicker.
Barely noticeable.
But it's there.
"How interesting," he murmurs.
"How would you know that?"
She doesn't answer.
But inside she thinks:
Because your men talk too much.
At the harbor docks…
Ren's convoy moves silently through the fog.
Hayato rides beside him.
Snipers already positioned.
Armed men waiting.
Ren's eyes are ice cold.
"Midnight," he says.
Hayato nods.
"That's when the shipment moves."
Ren's voice drops.
"And that's when we take everything from him."
Back at the Shipyard
Kuroda watches Reina carefully now.
More cautious.
More curious.
"You came here knowing something," he says slowly.
She answers calmly.
"You underestimate people who aren't soldiers."
His gaze sharpens.
"You're stalling."
"Maybe."
His smile returns.
Slow.
Dangerous.
"Good."
He turns slightly toward the guards.
"Kill the friend."
Yumi gasps in terror.
Reina's heart stops.
The guard raises his gun.
And that's when—
Headlights suddenly explode across the shipyard.
Engines roar in the distance.
Men shouting.
Gunfire erupts somewhere beyond the warehouses.
Kuroda's eyes flash with realization.
"You didn't come alone."
Reina whispers softly:
"No."
The rescue has begun.
But the battlefield is chaos.
And Kuroda is still standing right in front of her.
Gunfire cracks through the shipyard.
The quiet night explodes into chaos.
Men shout.
Bullets spark against metal containers.
Engines roar as black vehicles tear through the gates.
Kuroda's guards scramble into defensive positions.
Reina stands frozen for a moment as the world erupts around her.
Then—
A familiar voice cuts through the chaos.
"REINA!"
Ren.
Ren storms into the shipyard like a force of nature.
Two of his men fall in beside him as gunfire erupts.
But Ren doesn't slow.
A guard tries to block his path.
Ren shoots him without hesitation.
Another lunges forward with a knife.
Ren grabs his arm, twists hard—
The crack of bone echoes through the yard.
Then he throws the man aside like he weighs nothing.
Hayato watches from behind cover.
Even he mutters quietly:
"Boss has lost his patience."
Back near the warehouse.
Kuroda's men close in around Reina.
One of them grabs her arm roughly.
Another points a gun at Yumi's head.
"Move and she dies!"
Reina's pulse races.
She looks toward the gate.
And then she sees him.
Ren.
Walking straight through gunfire.
His eyes locked only on her.
Cold.
Furious.
Terrifying.
For a moment even Kuroda's men hesitate.
Because they can see it too.
This is not a man tonight.
This is a dragon protecting its territory.
Kuroda watches with calm fascination.
"Impressive."
He studies Ren like a scientist observing a predator.
"Look at him."
He leans slightly toward Reina.
"This is what you awaken in him."
Ren reaches the center of the yard.
Two more guards rush him.
He moves faster than they expect.
One shot.
Another.
Both drop.
His voice cuts across the battlefield.
"Let her go."
The command is quiet.
But deadly.
The guard holding Reina tightens his grip.
"You take one more step and she dies!"
Ren stops.
But his gun remains steady.
His voice lowers.
"You don't understand something."
The guard sneers.
"And what's that?"
Ren's eyes darken.
"You're already dead."
The guard's smile fades slightly.
Because Ren sounds absolutely certain.
In that moment.
Reina sees the opening.
The guard's attention is on Ren.
Not her.
She remembers everything Ren taught her about survival.
Create distraction.
Move fast.
Commit.
Her heel slams hard onto the guard's foot.
He shouts in pain.
She twists out of his grip.
The gun fires—
But the bullet misses.
Ren moves instantly.
One shot.
The guard collapses.
Reina stumbles back—
Straight into Ren's arms.
He grips her tightly.
Checking her quickly.
Hands moving across her arms, shoulders, face.
"Are you hurt?"
His voice is rough.
Raw.
She shakes her head slightly.
"I'm okay."
Behind them—
Hayato's men free Yumi.
But across the yard…
Kuroda is already retreating toward the shadows.
He meets Ren's gaze one last time.
And smiles.
Then disappears into the darkness.
The gunfire fades.
The battle ends.
Ren's men secure the area.
But Ren barely notices.
His attention is completely on Reina.
His hands still gripping her waist.
Like he's making sure she's real.
"You should have told me the plan," he mutters.
She looks up at him softly.
"You would have stopped me."
"Yes."
"And Yumi would be dead."
Silence.
Then he pulls her closer.
So close their foreheads touch.
His voice drops to a whisper.
"Don't ever scare me like that again."
Her heart races.
"Ok"
For a moment—
His lips almost meet hers.
But Hayato interrupts from behind them.
"The shipment at the port has been intercepted."
Ren glances back.
Hayato nods once.
"We took everything."
Reina smiles faintly.
The trap worked.
