Inside the speeding car, the air felt thick and suffocating. Daniella's head leaned weakly against the seat, her breathing labored and uneven. Her face had lost almost all color.
"Santiago…" she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the engine. "I… can't breathe…"
He glanced at her for a brief second, his face unreadable, then focused back on the road. His hands tightened on the steering wheel as he pushed the car even faster, the scenery blurring past the windows.
They reached the hospital in what felt like only minutes.
The car skidded to a sharp stop outside the emergency entrance. Before the engine had fully quieted, Santiago was already out, lifting Daniella from the seat and carrying her inside.
"Emergency!" a nurse called out immediately.
Everything accelerated.
