The drive to the village was around 4 hours I think. I wasn't completely sure as there was no clock, and I also hadn't bothered asking, not that I really had a chance to as Maya was asking questions with a more serious tone but with somehow an underlying affection in the tone. Which admittedly still weirded me out as it was hard to tell what was genuine with her. After all this is the same woman who saw her nephew as a weapon to destroy the world.
"What did you do in your free time?" Maya curiously asked, I was about to answer when she cut me off. "Oh and drop the cutesy act. I can see it in your eyes you are much more cunning and Intelligent than you were coming off as. I don't know why someone of your age is like that, especially considering the environment of the orphanage. For now I will not pry, but hopefully at some point you are willing to share your thoughts with me more openly." she said.
I hesitated to speak, then realized it would get me nowhere if I didn't cooperate to some extent. I was beginning to wonder if I'd been overly cautious with my new adoptive mother. After all, despite her actually caring a great deal about Tatsuya and Miyuki, they feared her as if she'd kill them at the slightest mistake. Don't get me wrong, she's powerful, cruel, vindictive, and scary. but that's towards her enemies and those who wronged her. So I thought 'screw it', what will happen is change either way.
"Until I revealed my ability to use magic, I would find a secluded spot and practice my magic. I was trying to understand what it is and how it works. Personally I believe it's similar to non-systematic magic as it has no elemental bearing… Actually, no. It's not that it has none, it's more that it is all of them at once." I replied, droping the act as my face became noticbly less expressive. And honestly, that's fine. That fake smile was starting to make my face hurt.
She smirked, slightly smug that she knew from the beginning and also approving that I didn't commit pointlessly to a failing prospect.
We continued to talk idly about topics less important things, about my likes and dislikes and hers in turn for example. After all, the last thing I want to do is provoke her.
We finally arrived at the village, and honestly I was surprised. I didn't remember all the details of the manga and anime but I honestly forgot that they lived in an abandoned and refurbished military base in the mountains not on any map. They truly are a group who see themselves and magic as a weapon to be honed.
"Passing through the tunnels is the entrance to the Yotsuba's village. Then from their we will arrive that at the main house. Ryu, you will be under scrutiny because although you are my adopted son you are technically an outsider in their eyes you will have to work hard to prove yourself. However, you must remember you are my son adopted, or not do not kneel to anyone not even my father the patriarch. Although you will be not begin training yet you will have your magic calculation area measured."Said Maya, with a slight undertone of contempt in her voice when she mentioned her father.
I nodded "I will not disappoint you… mother." I said, the feel of the word alien. I didn't know my birth giver in either life. In my previous life she eloped with rich man just 2 years after I was born, only to die later to the same man's twisted hobbies a year later. My father raised me the best he could but he died in my senior year of highschool from over work.
Maya beamed at me calling her mother. It was still weird, but I'd get used to it eventually.
The car finally came to a stop in front of a large traditional Japanese style manor. I looked out the window. I saw at front gate there were 3 people. My new adoptive aunt, Miya Shiba, who would perform a horrific augmentation to her son next year by my calculations and would die a year before canon. Said son, Tatsuya Shiba, the protagonist of the original story, the Demon of Okinawa, and affectionately known as godsuya by nerds. The last person was obviously her daughter, Miyuki Shiba, and honestly I don't know why people found her so attractive. I mean she's pretty I get that but she's a simp for her brother and emotionally unstable when it comes to him. Combine that with her absurd psion count and powerful magic. That is a bomb waiting to go off, although Tatsuya is a bigger bomb with his 2 inherent magics but I digress.
I got out of the car with my new mother and we began walking towards them. Hilariously Tatsuya looked cautious and was slightly shielding Miyuki. It was funny because currently he still had his emotions not that you could really tell much he was more expressive but only just. Miyuki was also frowning but I didn't really care feelings can change over time, and I had a feeling I knew why she looked so hostile.
I walked up towards them with Maya were we were then greeted by her sister.
"Welcome back dear sister I was wondering where you went so abruptly today. Oh, and who is this child you've brought back with you?" She asked with a kind polite ladylike smile.
She was truly a master of etiquette but I never understood why she performed such a horrific operation on Tatsuya. I mean yeah he had no magic calculation area so he could only use his inherent magic, but they were so incredibly fucking busted that he really wouldn't need any other. Oh well, not my monkeys not my circus.
"He is my son Miya, Yotsuba Ryu. I've adopted him because he caught my intrest and well you know the other reasons dear sister." Maya replied gesturing to me calmly, politely, and smiling.
Miya simply smiled at her response. Tatsuya visibly lowered his guard but only alittle, ha 'sis-con'. And strangely Miyuki hostility vanished replaced with wariness probably wondering if I'd treat Tatsuya like the majority of the other Yotsuba or not. She seemed to be giving me the benefit of the doubt since I was just adopted to the family, but her views have been shaped by the Yotsuba currently so this is only natural.
"Hello aunt Miya as stated I'm Yotsuba Ryu. A pleasure to meet you and what I can only assume are your children and my adoptive cousins" I said bowing politely but not enough to come across as subservient or submissive. It was in away a challenge saying I was their equal wether by blood or not.
Miya smiled politely amused by my actions actions. her children did not react however.
"Well we should go inside uncle will probably want an explanation." Said Miya still smiling it would have been unsettling and creepy if it didn't feel so genuine. Well I'm finally here. Well I like Tatsuya I think he's cool does he have much personality no not really. Is he overpowered as hell and getting close to him guarantee my safety when he and Miyuki eventually take over the clan? Oh most definitely, after all I have no intrest in ruling the clan. Also I probably wouldn't be allowed to any way without doing something like marrying Miyuki and I would rather die than marry that walking bomb of a brocon that's just asking for her to stab me in my sleep. After all I just want to make the best of my life maybe settle down and get married probably join the military at some point to as that is what most competent magician do anyway.
