Chapter 32 - Fading Sweetness

Chapter Thirty-Two

Fading Sweetness

(Noah's POV)

I noticed the difference immediately.

Yesterday the café had been full.

Today… it wasn't.

I stood behind the counter pretending to wipe the same cup for the third time while staring at the door.

No one came in.

Across the street, however, people were gathering around that other café.

I sighed quietly.

"Candy," Jack muttered beside me.

I glanced at him.

He was leaning against the counter, arms folded, staring at the crowd outside with clear annoyance.

"It's just sugar," he continued.

Daniel chuckled softly from the table near the window.

"Technically cake is also sugar."

Jack pointed a finger at him.

"Yes, but cake is refined sugar."

I almost smiled.

Almost.

But the quiet café made my chest feel heavy.

A few days ago this place had been filled with laughter and excitement.

People were curious about the cake.

Children pressed their faces against the display window.

Now most of them ran across the street asking for coffee candy.

I looked down at the remaining cakes in the glass case.

They were still warm.

Still soft.

Still delicious.

But suddenly they felt… forgotten.

Emma placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"Don't worry too much," she said softly.

"Trends come and go."

I nodded, but the feeling didn't leave.

I thought about my father.

How hard he worked every day gathering coffee beans from the mountains.

How proud he had looked during his birthday celebration.

For a moment the café had finally felt successful.

And now…

Now the street belonged to someone else again.

Jack suddenly straightened and slammed his hand lightly on the counter.

"That's it."

Daniel looked up.

"What is?"

Jack pointed toward the rival café dramatically.

"I refuse to lose to candy."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Oh really?"

"Yes really."

"What's your plan then, genius inventor?" I asked.

Jack paused.

Then he scratched the back of his head.

"I'll think of something."

Clare laughed quietly from the kitchen doorway.

"That sounds very reassuring."

Daniel smiled.

"At least he's confident."

I leaned against the counter and exhaled slowly.

The afternoon sunlight filtered through the café window, landing softly on the empty tables.

For the first time in days, the café felt strangely calm.

Too calm.

Clare walked over and gently placed a cup of warm coffee in front of me.

"You look like you need this," she said.

I wrapped my hands around the cup.

"Thank you."

She leaned closer and whispered playfully,

"Besides… competition makes things interesting."

I frowned slightly.

"You're not worried?"

Clare shrugged.

"Not really."

Jack blinked.

"Why not?"

Clare simply smiled.

"Because accidents create the best inventions."

Daniel tilted his head curiously.

"Are you planning something?"

Clare walked back toward the kitchen without answering.

I watched her disappear behind the door.

For a moment, I felt a tiny spark of curiosity.

But mostly I just felt tired.

Across the street the rival café erupted with cheers again.

Someone must have bought more candy.

Jack groaned dramatically.

"Unbelievable."

Daniel chuckled.

But in the quiet kitchen behind us, Clare had already begun experimenting with a small bowl of sugar.

And none of us noticed that the next invention—

The one that would change the café's fate again—

Was already beginning to take shape.
