Chapter 15 - When Paths Cross

Chapter Fifteen

When Paths Cross

It was late afternoon.

Clare had stayed back after school to help Noah arrange some books at the café.

Jack was arguing about something unnecessary.

Alice was correcting homework.

The café door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

He wasn't looking around — just ordering coffee politely.

Then—

He heard laughter.

A laugh he hadn't heard in years.

Soft. Clear. Familiar.

His hand froze slightly on the counter.

Slowly, he turned.

Across the café—

Clare.

Older now.

Her hair longer. Her posture more confident.

But unmistakably her.

For a moment, the room blurred.

She looked up casually—

Their eyes met.

Silence.

Clare blinked.

Recognition took a second longer for her.

Then—

"Daniel?"

She didn't say "Your Highness."

She didn't bow.

Just his name.

Jack turned instantly.

He followed her gaze.

Then his eyes widened.

"Daniel?"

Now it was his turn.

The two cousins stared at each other.

"You're here?" Jack asked.

"For law," Daniel replied calmly.

Clare looked between them, confused.

"You know each other?"

Jack laughed lightly. "He's my cousin."

Clare's mind paused.

Cousin?

Daniel… and Jack?

The world suddenly felt smaller.

Xavier entered a few minutes later.

He stopped slightly when he saw Daniel.

They recognized each other from university lectures.

"You two know each other?" Jack asked.

"Same law program," Xavier answered.

Introductions were exchanged.

"Clare," she said politely.

Daniel's eyes flickered again at her name.

"Wilson," Jack added casually while speaking about something else. "Daniel Wilson."

Xavier's attention sharpened.

Wilson.

He glanced at Clare.

"You're from Wilson Kingdom?" he asked her.

Clare nodded. "Yes."

Xavier went quiet.

The same kingdom connected to certain land disputes long ago.

The same region whose legal systems he had studied intensely.

He said nothing more.

But something filed itself away in his mind.

Jack looked between Daniel and Clare.

Then back at Daniel.

"You didn't know she was here?" Jack asked.

Daniel shook his head once.

"No."

Jack smirked slightly.

"That's dramatic."

Noah crossed her arms. "Why are you all acting strange?"

Alice watched everything carefully.

The way Daniel's tone softened slightly when he spoke to Clare.

The way Clare stood a little straighter when speaking to him.

The history she didn't know about.

Alice felt something small and uncomfortable stir.

Not jealousy.

Not yet.

But awareness.

The group felt… shifted.

Different.

Xavier observed silently.

Daniel composed himself quickly.

"It's been years," he said to Clare.

"Yes," she replied.

Neither mentioned the vanilla plant.

Neither mentioned church mass.

Neither mentioned goodbye.

Because neither of them had said one.

Outside, the evening light dimmed.

Inside Café Noah—

Six young people now stood connected.

Some by childhood.

Some by blood.

Some by ambition.

Some by unfinished stories.

And none of them realized—

This meeting had just changed the balance forever.
