Chapter Twenty
Something Unsaid
Monday morning felt normal.
Too normal.
The classroom buzzed with usual noise — chairs dragging, books opening, students complaining about unfinished homework.
But inside their group—
Something was off.
Jack entered the classroom confidently as always.
He dropped into his seat beside Noah.
"Good morning," he said casually.
Noah didn't look at him.
"Morning," she replied, eyes fixed on her notebook.
Jack blinked.
"That's it?"
"Yes."
Clare, sitting in front of them, slowly turned around.
She sensed it instantly.
"What happened to you?" Jack asked Noah quietly.
"Nothing."
"You're quiet."
"I'm studying."
Jack frowned. "You never study this seriously."
Noah snapped her notebook shut slightly harder than necessary. "Maybe I changed."
That shut him up.
For now.
During class, Jack tried passing her a folded paper.
She ignored it.
It fell off her desk.
She didn't pick it up.
Clare picked it up instead and glanced at it.
It read:
> Did I do something illegal yesterday?
Clare almost smiled.
She handed it back to Jack.
Noah refused to look.
At break time—
Alice approached.
She walked toward Jack, slower than usual.
"Did you finish the history assignment?" she asked softly.
Jack nodded. "Yes. Why?"
"Can I see it?"
"Of course."
He moved slightly closer so she could read.
She leaned in.
Not too close.
But closer than before.
Noah saw it.
Her jaw tightened slightly.
Clare noticed.
Alice tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled faintly. "You explain things clearly."
Jack shrugged. "I try."
Noah suddenly stood up.
"I need air."
And walked out.
Jack stared after her. "What is wrong with her?"
Clare turned slowly.
"You really don't know?"
"Know what?"
Clare hesitated.
She wasn't sure if it was her place to say.
Across the room, Alice watched Noah leave.
Her expression unreadable.
Not guilt.
Not innocence.
Something in between.
Later, during lunch—
Noah sat with Clare under a tree instead of their usual group table.
"You're avoiding him," Clare said gently.
"I'm not."
"You are."
Noah looked away.
Clare studied her face carefully.
"Did something yesterday bother you?"
Noah hesitated.
Then finally said, "It was nothing."
But her tone didn't match her words.
From the classroom window, Jack watched them.
Confused.
And for the first time—
Slightly unsettled.
Inside the classroom again, Alice placed her notebook on Jack's desk.
"Thank you for yesterday," she said softly again.
Jack scratched his head. "It was just reflex."
She smiled.
Noah saw that too.
And something twisted tighter inside her chest.
She didn't understand it.
But she didn't like it.
