[Mountain Inner-Wall Position — Day 99, 0600-1800]
The south breach opened at 0600 on Bellamy's radio signal, and the three columns moved in simultaneously, which was the plan, and the simultaneity held for eleven minutes, which was better than the drill had managed.
Ethan had the command tent at the inner-wall's rear position — the tent Lexa had not left since 1600 yesterday, which meant the beeswax-and-sage smell had built through the night and was now the tent's primary register even at 0600. Raven's field-medical kits were staged behind the tent's east wall: fourteen packs, organized by casualty type. He had put the packs there himself at 0330 after the bridge meeting, in the ninety minutes between Maya's departure and the column's advance.
The field-comm board had three frequencies: Bellamy's south breach, Indra's east breach, the Coalition cavalry holding the ridges.
"South breach, minute 11 — holding formation," Bellamy's voice, flat, operational. "Defender count lower than projected. They pulled back to Level 3."
"East breach, minute 9 — Trikru main column through. Two wounded, mobile." Indra, from a different kind of distance — the distance of a person in the middle of something rather than in a radio tent.
He ran the math. The Mountain had pulled its defenders inward. Cage was not fighting the breach — he was fighting the Level 3 corridor. The inner breach was the Mountain's version of a controlled retreat, the way a military institution that knew it was going to lose chose the terms of the losing.
He pulled the ration bar from his coat pocket. Ate it standing at the field-comm board. The bar was cold enough to be difficult to break — the pre-dawn temperature had gotten into the staging area and had not left. He ate it anyway, methodically, because the CPE had flagged functional threshold fourteen hours ago and functioning required food and there was no better time than the six seconds between radio updates.

Hour 3.
The radio frequency for Mountain internal surveillance — the one they had cracked from Bellamy's Day 63-89 reconnaissance, the one that Raven had calibrated to receive the marrow-extraction queue updates — registered a single change at hour 3.
Ethan logged it before he named it.
[Voice: Hala Wen-Mira. EXP Penalty: −100. Delivered.] [Voices catalogued: 128.]
He put the logging stylus down on the field table.
Lexa was on the tent's south side. Clarke was at the map table. Both were looking at him.
He said: "Hala's extraction completed at 0900." He said it clearly, in the room, so the room knew. "She has been in the Voice catalog since Day 71. Her name is in the catalog. I am noting this aloud so the record is not private."
Lexa said nothing.
Clarke said nothing.
He picked up the stylus.
He had been waiting to say this aloud for thirty-one days, since Hala's signal had gone dark in the Mountain's surveillance data and the extraction queue had begun. He had made the trade — hold the timeline, lose Hala — in this same tent, with Clarke and Lexa and the math spread on the table. The catalog entry being made public was not penance. It was the accounting that the trade had always owed.

Hour 4.
The front line report from Bellamy's south breach came not from Bellamy but from Monroe: "Cole, this is Monroe. Blake is down — shoulder wound. He's calling it non-evac. He is currently running the formation from the south corridor's forward position."
He pressed the radio button. "What kind of non-evac."
"Round caught the left shoulder. Went through. He sealed it with the field kit and kept the line."
Left shoulder.
He felt the sky-iron blade's weight in his coat pocket. The weight the blade had had since Anya handed it to him unsigned on the bridge — the weight of a thing given by someone who gave rarely. His own left shoulder had the scar from Ch.38's operation, the wound that had taken six weeks to heal and had been the last injury he'd carried long enough to feel as a reference rather than an acute event.
Bellamy had taken the same wound.
In the same shoulder.
He did not say any of this. He pressed the radio button: "Keep him on the line until he can't hold it anymore. When he can't hold it, get him back."
Monroe: "Copy."
Lincoln was on the ridge — had been on the ridge since 0400, on his second day of silence, communicating exclusively by radio short-form and hand signals. He was at Bellamy's south approach, covering the corridor's left flank. He would have seen the wound. He would have registered what Ethan had registered.
He had not transmitted anything.

Hour 5.
Indra's cavalry arrived at the south position at 1100 — an hour before the plan had specified, which was the plan's imprecision adjusted by the chief's judgment. She rode past the command tent's east side. She did not stop. She turned her horse enough to face Ethan for three seconds, which was the duration of a sentence in Trikru horsemanship.
"You wrote the brief," she said. "We rode the brief."
The public consolidation of her chief-seat authority — the Ethan-recommendation of Ch.58, the letter that had no signet, the math that had favored Indra because the math had favored stability — paid in full. The debt was now mutual: he had recommended her; she had ridden the brief; the Mountain assault record would show both.
She rode on.

Hour 6.
The Level 3 corridor breach came at 1200.
With it, for the first time: a voice on the captured Mountain internal radio that was not a casualty report or a tactical update.
"You will not finish this."
Cage's voice. The specific quality of someone speaking into a confined space — the Mountain's internal radio, not the outside frequency. The voice of a man who had signed the marrow-acceleration order and had imprisoned his father and had spent six days running a defense against something he had always known would eventually come.
Ethan looked at the radio.
He did not answer.
The Mountain's defenders were in their five remaining corridors between Level 3 and the reactor level. The clock was running. He picked up the map and marked the corridor breach and put the map down and picked up the next frequency and called the formation update.
"Level 3 confirmed," he said. "Column holds current position. Phase 2 timer to reactor approach: 08:00."
The captured radio stayed quiet after that.
