[Sky-Trikru Bridge — Day 99, 0200]
She had the schematic open before he reached the center span.
The bridge at 02:00 was the coldest version of itself — the frost on the carved sigil making the incision's edges sharp and white, the river smell going from mineral to something that was almost the absence of smell, the quality of air that had been very cold for a long time and had stopped carrying anything. Maya was at the center with the hand-drawn schematic spread on the stone, held flat by two rocks from the bank, and she was standing straight in the way of someone who had prepared for this conversation and had decided that the preparation was done and the conversation was happening now.
Lincoln was at the north end of the bridge. On watch, facing away from the center span. His back said: I will hear this and file it and not speak of it.
Ethan crossed the span.
The pin caught the lantern Maya had brought — the one lantern, small, held at bridge height — before he reached her. The pin always caught light. He had started to think of it as a tell.
Maya looked at the schematic.
"I designed this," she said. "You have been told the version I told you to be told."
He looked at the schematic.
It was not what he had expected — not because the architecture was different from what he'd understood, but because the handwriting was Maya's, the notation system was Maya's, and the structural logic visible in the schematic's margin annotations was the work of someone who had been building this for considerably longer than the eight days since Bellamy's extraction. The dates in the margin were sixty days old.
He had spent eight days believing he was the architect.
The CPE logged the correction quietly.
[SYSTEM: Meta-Knowledge Catalog — DECAY EVENT #4] [Stored projection: Targeted-irradiation architecture — attributed to Sky-People-directed design in stored episode data. Actual: Maya Vie, Mountain civilian resistance, independent engineering. Attribution error confirmed.] [Catalog updated. Projection reliability: reduced in Mountain-interior chapters.]
"It works," Maya said, "because I built it. The pulse hits military-sector wiring only — the frequency targeting is built into the reactor's existing differential by sector. I found this in the Mountain's original construction blueprints from Year 1. The engineers who built this place knew the wiring differentials existed. They never thought to use them this way." She looked at the schematic. "Cage doesn't know about the Year 1 blueprints because his father archived them under a catalog number I was trusted to maintain."
"Dante knew."
"Dante knew I had the blueprints. He did not know what I had built with them." She picked up the schematic, folded it once, handed it to him. "Take this. Not because you need it. Because I want it out of the Mountain before the pulse fires."
He took it. Put it in his coat with the constitutional paper.
He looked at her.
She was twenty years old, or thereabouts, and had been inside Mount Weather for her entire life, and had built a targeted-irradiation weapon in the Mountain's own library using blueprints her enemies hadn't known to look for. She was looking at him with the expression of someone who had just said something honest and was waiting to see whether it landed correctly.
"I will name you in the Coalition record," he said. "Not aloud. In writing. You will not have to defend the naming. The naming will be there."
She held his eyes for a moment.
"In the Designs Ledger," she said. It was not quite a question.
"Yes."
"The same ledger Wick uses."
"The same one."
She looked back at the river. The frost on the stone made the bridge smell like iron and winter. He had been carrying a version of this moment since Ch.37 when Anya had handed him the sky-iron blade and the blade had been heavy in the specific way of things given by people who gave rarely.
This was the same kind of giving — something that had been held a long time, placed with exactly the weight it deserved.
"Two of my fourteen will be in the wrong sector tomorrow," Maya said. She said it without looking at him. "I have the shift rotations through tomorrow at 1800 and the rotations confirm two of my fourteen are unaccounted in the targeting window. I cannot tell which two. The variance is in the shift schedule and Cage has been randomizing the civilian sector assignments since the outer earthworks fell." A pause. "I wanted you to know I have this data. I am not fixing the variance. I cannot fix the variance in four hours without alerting the rotation system that someone has been looking at it."
He stood with this for three seconds.
She was telling him that two people were going to die in the pulse who were on her side. She was not asking him to stop the pulse. She was not performing the grief for it. She was briefing him on a known margin and naming it out loud in the way that engineers named known margins: clinically, in advance, so that when the margin fired someone had been told it existed.
He had done the same thing at Tondc. He had known the margin and had not changed the outcome and had carried the margin afterward.
She was going to carry it too.
"I hear you," he said. That was all.
Maya picked up the lantern.
"I am going back at 04:00," she said. "The vent will be accessible at 03:40. Lincoln has the timing." She looked at the constitutional paper's outline through his coat — the paper had its own thickness, different from the schematic she had handed him. "The Coalition record. Make sure it says what it should say."
"I will."
She went back across the bridge.
Lincoln did not turn when she passed him. He was still facing north, watching the approach, and Maya walked back into the dark toward the Mountain without looking at either of them.
Ethan stood on the bridge with the schematic in his coat and the two-rock weights still on the stone where she had placed them to hold the paper flat.
He put the rocks back in the river.
He walked back toward the command position.
