"What did I do wrong?" I finally asked after a long stretch of silence.
Kairos stared at me as if I had just asked the most absurd question imaginable.
But he didn't answer.
Instead, he walked over to his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a box of cigars. He took one, lit it, and began to smoke.
Within seconds, the room filled with the heavy scent of tobacco. He sat on the edge of his desk, his gaze fixed anywhere but on me.
Still silent. I hated it.
I hated the way he shut down every time I asked him something that mattered. Maybe I didn't deserve to know why he had suddenly returned from the dead after five years, but I at least deserved to know why he was punishing me for something I didn't even understand.
I opened my mouth to speak again.
"Save your breath, Cassy," he cut in coldly. "If it's not about signing the contract, I don't want to hear it."
A bitter laugh escaped me as I shook my head.
