Chapter 76 - Power Struggle II

"Last group coming through!" Kasumi reported, her Gardevoir levitating a cluster of Magnemite toward the main exit.

"Structural integrity at critical levels!" Kiyomi called. "We have less than a minute before total collapse!"

"Everyone out! Now!" Sasuke commanded. "Raikou, Landorus, make sure nothing's left behind, then follow us!"

They ran through corridors they'd mapped during the rescue, Pokemon streaming around them in a flood of Electric-types seeking escape. The main entrance was ahead, sunlight visible through the open doors.

Fifty feet. Forty. Thirty.

Behind them, Generator Chamber 3 finally exceeded its limits. The explosion was massive, contained somewhat by the facility's robust construction, but still powerful enough to send shockwaves through the entire structure.

Twenty feet. Ten.

They burst through the entrance as the building began its final collapse. Walls crumbled, roof sections caved in, windows exploded outward. The power plant that had served Kanto for decades died in catastrophic fashion.

But everyone made it out.

Wild Pokemon scattered into the surrounding forest, fleeing the destruction but alive and free. The rescued captives from Aether Foundation's cages followed them, finally liberated from imprisonment. Sasuke's group collapsed on the ground a safe distance away, breathing hard but uninjured.

Raikou and Landorus emerged last, both Legendary Pokemon having stayed behind to ensure no one was left in the collapsing structure. They manifested beside Sasuke, clearly exhausted but satisfied with the successful rescue.

"Is everyone accounted for?" Miyuki asked, doing a headcount of their group.

"We're all here," Kasumi confirmed. "And I saw the last of the wild Pokemon escape. No casualties."

"The facility?" Kiyomi looked at the smoking ruins.

The power plant was gone. What had been an impressive industrial structure was now a collapsed pile of rubble, smoke rising from dozens of fires. It would never generate electricity again, never threaten the surrounding area with potential explosions.

The death of the old power plant was complete. But it had died saving lives rather than taking them.

As they caught their breath, movement in the forest caught Sasuke's attention. A Pokemon emerged from the trees, an Electivire, but massive. Easily eight feet tall, heavily muscled, with scars suggesting many battles survived. The way other Electric-types deferred to it made its status clear: this was the elder, the leader of the wild Pokemon colony.

The Electivire approached slowly, its eyes fixed on Sasuke. For a moment, neither human nor Pokemon moved. Then the elder dipped its head, a gesture of respect and gratitude.

"You're welcome," Sasuke said simply. "We couldn't let those people hurt your colony."

The Electivire reached behind itself and produced two items from somewhere, Pokemon could store objects in mysterious ways. It offered them to Sasuke carefully.

A Thunder Stone, glowing with trapped electrical energy. And a Magnet, the specialized item that enhanced Electric-type moves.

"These are valuable," Sasuke said, recognizing the items. Thunder Stones enabled certain Pokemon to evolve. Magnets were rare materials that serious Electric-type trainers sought constantly. "Are you sure?"

The Electivire nodded firmly. This was payment, gratitude made tangible. The wild Pokemon had little else to offer, but these items were precious to them. That they were willing to give them spoke to the depth of their appreciation.

"Thank you," Sasuke accepted the gifts carefully. "Your colony is safe now. And Aether Foundation won't be bothering this area again, there's nothing left for them to exploit."

The Electivire made a rumbling sound of agreement, then retreated into the forest. The other wild Pokemon followed, the entire colony disappearing into the trees. They'd find a new home, establish a new territory, rebuild their community.

But they would remember the humans who'd saved them when they needed help most.

"We should report this," Miyuki said once the Pokemon were gone. "Officer Jenny needs to know what Aether Foundation did here."

They returned to the RV, driving back to Route 6 and continuing until they reached a town with a police station. Officer Jenny, a member of the widespread law enforcement family, listened to their report with increasing concern.

"Aether Foundation," she said, making notes. "This is the third incident we've received reports about. Mt. Moon, an incident near Viridian Forest, and now this. They're becoming more active."

"What are they trying to accomplish?" Kasumi asked.

"Unknown. They claim to be a Pokemon research organization doing legitimate scientific work. But their methods are questionable at best, criminal at worst." Officer Jenny closed her notebook. "I'll forward this to League Rangers and Interpol. Organizations that capture Pokemon illegally need to be investigated thoroughly."

"Will anything actually happen?" Kiyomi asked skeptically. "Or will they claim research exemptions and continue operating?"

"That depends on evidence and political will," Officer Jenny admitted. "Aether Foundation has money and influence. Fighting them requires more than just incident reports, it requires proof of systematic wrongdoing. You've helped by documenting what you saw. If more people come forward with similar evidence, eventually we'll have enough to act."

They left the police station with mixed feelings. They'd done the right thing by reporting, but whether anything would come from it remained uncertain. Large organizations with resources could often evade consequences for questionable activities.

"At least we saved those Pokemon," Miyuki said as they returned to the road. "That's something tangible. Whatever Aether Foundation's ultimate goals are, they failed here."

"Pattern's forming though," Sasuke observed. "Mt. Moon, the Power Plant, they're targeting locations with wild Pokemon populations. Capturing them for research or experiments. That suggests a larger operation."

"Which means we'll probably encounter them again," Kiyomi concluded. "They know about us now. We've disrupted their operations twice. That might make us targets."

"Let them come," Kasumi said with unusual fierceness. "We'll stop them every time."

The encounter had changed something in their group dynamic. They'd started this journey pursuing individual goals, badges, ribbons, research, medical certification. But now they'd discovered a larger purpose: protecting Pokemon from those who would exploit them.

That wasn't the primary mission. They weren't vigilantes or League Rangers. But when they encountered situations where Pokemon needed help, they wouldn't look away.

The afternoon sun painted Route 6 in golden light as they continued toward Vermillion City. The gym challenge awaited. Kasumi's Contest preparation needed to continue. Normal journey activities would resume.

But the shadow of Aether Foundation now loomed larger over their travels. They weren't just occasional obstacles, they were an active threat that would likely resurface.

"How much further to Vermillion?" Sasuke asked.

"Three hours," Kiyomi reported. "We should arrive before evening."

"Good. Let's focus on why we're traveling, gym battles, contests, research. Aether Foundation is a problem, but it's not our primary problem. League authorities will handle them."

"And if we encounter them again?" Miyuki asked.

"Then we'll do what we did today," Sasuke replied. "Protect the Pokemon and get everyone to safety. But we're trainers, not investigators. Our job is to grow stronger and pursue our goals."

Sound logic, even if it felt inadequate given what they'd witnessed. But Sasuke was right, they couldn't solve every problem or fight every wrong. They could only do their best in situations they encountered.

The Thunder Stone and Magnet sat in Sasuke's bag now, gifts from grateful wild Pokemon. Physical reminders of today's actions and their consequences.

They'd made a difference. Saved lives. Disrupted criminal operations.

That was worth the danger. That was what being a trainer meant, not just pursuing personal achievement, but protecting the bond between humans and Pokemon from those who would twist it toward exploitation.

Vermillion City approached on the horizon. New challenges awaited. The journey continued.

But today had added a new dimension to their purpose. They were travelers, trainers, coordinators, researchers.

And when necessary, they were protectors.

Some things were more important than badges or ribbons. Some battles needed to be fought regardless of personal goals.

And the battle against Aether Foundation had only just begun.
