Chapter 27 - Chapter 26: The Alpha’s Return

The world tilted.

Lyra barely registered the voices around her anymore.

The Council…

The Northern Seat…

They were hunting her…

The words echoed in her mind, over and over, louder than the wind, louder than the tension still hanging in the air.

Her chest tightened.

Her breath grew uneven.

And suddenly.

Her legs gave out.

She stumbled.

The ground rushed up.

But she never hit it.

Strong arms caught her instantly.

Firm.

Steady.

Unyielding.

"Lyra."

Darian's voice cut through the noise.

Low.

Controlled.

But closer now.

Her fingers instinctively gripped his shirt, her vision blurring slightly as she tried to steady herself.

"I… I'm fine…" she whispered.

But her body betrayed her.

She wasn't fine.

Not after everything.

Not after that truth.

Darian's grip tightened just slightly.

Not enough to hurt.

But enough to hold her there.

Ground her.

"You're not," he said quietly.

For a moment, Lyra didn't argue.

She couldn't.

Her strength felt… distant. Like something had been pulled away from her the moment she realized what she had become in the eyes of the world.

Not just someone running.

Not just someone surviving.

But someone being hunted.

Darian's gaze lifted.

Sharp.

Commanding.

"Cassian."

The assistant stepped forward immediately.

Tall. Composed. His dark eyes flicked briefly toward Lyra, assessing, before returning to Darian.

"Yes, Alpha."

"Handle the rest."

Two simple words.

But absolute.

Cassian nodded once.

"It will be done."

Behind him, the guards moved without hesitation.

Half of them stepped forward, tightening their hold on the captured hunters, forcing them to their feet, securing restraints, checking weapons.

The other half shifted formation instantly.

Forming around Darian.

Protective.

Loyal.

Silent.

Lyra barely noticed the movement.

Her head rested lightly against Darian's chest now, her breathing slowly evening out, though her body still felt weak.

Too much.

Everything had been too much.

Without another word, Darian bent slightly.

And lifted her.

Effortless.

Like she weighed nothing.

Lyra's eyes widened slightly, a faint flush rising to her face despite her exhaustion.

"Darian"

"Quiet."

The word wasn't harsh.

But it wasn't gentle either.

It was… final.

And somehow, that made her relax.

He turned without looking back.

The guards moved with him instantly, their formation shifting as they began walking toward the waiting vehicles stationed just beyond the open field.

Lyra blinked slowly as they came into view.

Black.

Sleek.

Powerful.

Not ordinary transport.

The doors opened the moment they approached.

Darian stepped forward and lowered her carefully onto the back seat.

Not roughly.

Not carelessly.

But with a control that spoke of someone used to being obeyed… and obeyed instantly.

Lyra leaned back against the soft leather, her body still weak, her mind still spinning.

Darian slid in beside her.

The door shut.

_______

Outside, commands were already being issued.

Cassian's voice carried clearly.

"Move them. Separate vehicles. No mistakes."

"Yes, sir."

The engines started almost at once.

Smooth.

Quiet.

Deadly efficient.

Inside the car, silence settled.

Lyra turned her head slightly, her gaze landing on Darian.

He looked different now.

Not just the man she had fought beside in the forest.

Not just the one who had protected her.

But something more.

Something bigger.

"You're…" she hesitated.

"…an Alpha."

Darian didn't look at her immediately.

His gaze remained forward, watching the road ahead as the car began to move.

"Yes."

Just one word.

No explanation.

No denial.

Lyra swallowed slightly.

Her fingers curled faintly against the seat.

Everything made sense now.

The control.

The power.

The way others moved around him.

"And they…" she continued softly, "…they listen to you like"

"Because they have to."

This time, he turned.

Golden eyes meeting hers.

Steady.

Unwavering.

"Because they trust me to lead," he added.

The car sped forward, leaving the forest far behind.

The open land stretched around them, wide and endless, but Lyra barely noticed.

Her world had shifted.

Again.

Time passed quietly.

The hum of the engine.

The soft movement of the road beneath them.

The steady presence beside her.

And then.

She saw it.

At first, just a silhouette in the distance.

Large.

Imposing.

Then clearer.

Closer.

A mansion.

No.

Not just a mansion.

An estate.

Massive gates stood tall at the entrance, guarded and secured. Beyond them, the structure rose like something out of power and history tall pillars, wide windows, dark stone gleaming under the sunlight.

It wasn't just a home.

It was a statement.

Lyra sat up slightly, her eyes widening.

"This is…"

"Home," Darian said simply.

The gates opened before the car even stopped.

Guards on either side stepped back immediately, heads lowered in silent respect.

The car drove in.

Lyra's heart beat faster.

This place…

This world…

It was nothing like the forest.

And somehow.

It felt even more dangerous.

Darian stepped out first.

Then turned, offering his hand.

Not as a command.

But as something else.

Lyra hesitated for just a second.

Then placed her hand in his.

He helped her out.

Steady.

Grounded.

As she stood there, looking up at the massive estate before her, one thought echoed in her mind

She hadn't escaped danger.

She had just stepped into its center.
