The door closed with a soft click.
Silence followed.
Darian didn't turn immediately.
He stood near the large window, looking out over the estate grounds.
The night had begun to settle, shadows stretching across the land, the lights of the territory flickering to life one by one.
Calm.
Controlled.
Ordered.
Behind him, Cassian remained still.
Waiting.
He didn't speak until Darian did.
"You saw it," Darian said at last.
His voice was low, steady.
Not a question.
Cassian's gaze sharpened slightly.
"Yes."
A pause.
Then.
"More than once."
Darian's fingers tapped lightly against the glass.
Once.
Twice.
Measured.
"The forest," Cassian continued, stepping forward slightly.
"The hunters.
The suppression field…"
His eyes narrowed just a fraction.
"She shouldn't have been able to resist it."
Darian turned then.
Slowly.
Golden eyes locking onto him.
"She didn't resist it," he said.
Cassian held his gaze.
"Then what did she do?"
Silence stretched between them.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Darian walked past him, moving toward the center of the room.
"She adapted," he said.
Cassian's expression shifted slightly.
That answer.
It wasn't normal.
"Adapted…" he repeated quietly.
"That power," Darian continued, "it's not stable. It reacts. It learns."
Cassian's jaw tightened slightly.
"That makes it unpredictable."
"That makes it dangerous."
The two statements overlapped.
Perfectly aligned.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Cassian exhaled slowly.
"The Council felt it," he said.
"That means others will too."
Darian's expression didn't change.
"They already have."
Cassian frowned slightly.
"The Northern Seat doesn't move without reason," he said. "If they sent hunters, it means they've already classified her as a threat."
Darian's gaze darkened.
"Not just a threat."
A pause.
"A target."
The word settled heavily in the room.
Cassian studied him carefully now.
"You're protecting her."
Not a question.
An observation.
Darian didn't deny it.
"Yes."
Cassian's eyes narrowed slightly.
"That's not like you."
Silence.
Darian's gaze shifted briefly toward the door—
The direction Lyra had gone.
"No," he said quietly.
"It isn't."
Cassian stepped closer now, his tone lowering.
"Then why?"
For a moment.
Just a moment.
Darian didn't answer.
Then.
"Because I know what she is."
Cassian stilled.
That.
That wasn't a normal response.
"And what exactly is she?" Cassian asked.
Darian's gaze returned to him.
Sharp.
Certain.
"Something they shouldn't have touched."
A chill ran through the room.
Cassian's expression hardened slightly.
"That's not an answer."
"It's enough."
The words cut cleanly.
Silence fell again.
Cassian exhaled slowly, running a hand briefly through his hair before letting it fall back to his side.
"Seraphine won't accept this," he said.
Darian didn't react.
"She's already questioning your decision," Cassian continued. "And if the others follow her lead"
"They won't."
The interruption was immediate.
Absolute.
Cassian studied him for a moment.
Then nodded once.
"Understood."
But he didn't leave.
"There's more," he said.
Darian's gaze flicked back to him.
"The hunters," Cassian continued.
"They weren't just tracking power."
A pause.
"They were expecting her."
Darian's eyes narrowed slightly.
"That means information leaked," Cassian said.
"Or worse…"
He didn't finish.
He didn't need to.
Darian understood.
"There's someone watching," Cassian added quietly.
A long silence followed.
Then.
Darian turned back toward the window.
"Let them watch," he said.
Cassian frowned slightly.
"That could put the pack at risk."
Darian's voice dropped.
Lower.
Colder.
"They're already at risk."
A pause.
"But they don't know what they're dealing with."
Cassian's gaze sharpened.
"And you do?"
Darian didn't turn this time.
"Yes."
The certainty in his voice left no room for doubt.
Cassian exhaled slowly.
Then gave a small nod.
"Then I'll increase security," he said. "No one gets close to her without clearance."
Darian nodded once.
"And Cassian"
He paused.
Cassian looked up.
"Watch her," Darian said.
A beat.
"But don't interfere."
Cassian's brow furrowed slightly.
"That's a contradiction."
Darian's lips curved just slightly.
Not quite a smile.
"No," he said.
"It's a test."
Silence.
Cassian held his gaze for a moment longer.
Then.
He nodded.
"Understood, Alpha."
He turned and walked toward the door.
But just before he stepped out.
He stopped.
"One more thing," he said.
Darian didn't turn.
"If she loses control…"
A pause.
"What do you want me to do?"
The question hung in the air.
Sharp.
Necessary.
For a moment.
There was no answer.
Then.
Darian spoke.
"Let me handle it."
Cassian didn't respond.
He simply nodded once more…
And left.
The door closed behind him.
Darian stood alone in the silence.
His gaze lifted slightly.
Not to the estate.
Not to the night.
But somewhere deeper.
Something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
Down the hallway…
In a quiet room…
Lyra sat alone.
