Chapter 12 - chapter 12 passenger

The elevator descended in silence.

A low mechanical hum filled the space as the numbers above the door flickered downward.

7…

6…

5…

Kenji stood perfectly still.

His breathing was steady.

But his eyes remained fixed on the floor.

Two shadows stared back at him.

One belonged to him.

The other did not.

The second shadow stretched beside his own like spilled ink—too dark, too solid for something shaped by light.

Kenji didn't move.

He simply watched it.

For a moment—

nothing happened.

Then the second shadow shifted.

Not like a shadow reacting to movement.

Like something adjusting its weight.

Kenji spoke quietly.

"You followed me."

The elevator hummed.

4…

The shadow rose along the wall, stretching upward—tall, uneven, almost human in shape.

It had no edges.

No form.

Just darkness that refused to behave like darkness.

Kenji tilted his head slightly.

"Were you in the room?"

No answer.

The temperature dropped.

Fast.

Cold air spread across the metal floor and climbed the walls.

Kenji's breath fogged faintly.

The shadow slid closer.

Not touching him.

Not reaching.

Just watching.

Kenji didn't step away.

"Were you one of the ones who told me to stay dead?"

The lights flickered.

3…

The shadow stopped.

For a moment—

it almost felt like it was thinking.

Then—

The elevator jolted violently.

The lights died.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Total.

Absolute.

The hum vanished.

The descent stopped.

Kenji stood still in the black.

Listening.

Something moved behind him.

Slow.

Dragging.

Not quite footsteps.

"Show yourself," Kenji said.

The darkness thickened.

Not empty—

occupied.

Then a voice answered.

"You weren't supposed to return."

It wasn't loud.

It didn't echo.

It simply existed.

Ancient.

Flat.

Certain.

Kenji didn't react.

"You already told me that."

Silence.

Then—

"But you came back anyway."

Something brushed past his shoulder.

Cold.

Not like a hand.

Like something passing through him to confirm he was there.

"I didn't choose to," Kenji said.

A pause.

"Perhaps."

The word lingered.

Not agreement.

Not denial.

Judgment.

The lights flickered back to life.

Dim.

Weak.

Kenji looked down.

The second shadow—

gone.

Only his remained.

The elevator jerked again.

Then resumed descending.

2…

1…

DING.

The doors opened.

The hospital lobby stretched out before him.

Empty chairs.

Dark windows.

Rain tapping softly against the glass entrance.

Kenji stepped forward slowly.

The elevator doors began to close behind him.

Just before they sealed—

he glanced back.

Inside the elevator—

the mirror reflected something standing there.

Tall.

Still.

Watching him leave.

And this time—

it smiled.
