Cherreads

Chapter 11 - chapter 11 the Empty corridor

The hallway smelled faintly of disinfectant and rainwater tracked in from outside.

Kenji moved forward slowly, his bare feet quiet against the cold tile.

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered, not enough to fail—just enough to make the shadows shift.

Hospitals never truly slept.

But this floor felt different.

Too still.

Too empty.

He glanced back.

Room 312 stood open.

Inside, the heart monitor still screamed—

BEEEEEEEEEEP.

No one came.

No nurses.

No alarms.

No urgency.

Just that sound, stretching thin down the corridor like it had nowhere to go.

That wasn't normal.

Kenji turned forward again.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The silence pressed in around him, heavy and close, like standing just beneath the surface of water.

He passed the nurse's station.

Empty.

Computer monitors glowed softly.

Charts lay half-finished on the desk.

A chair turned slowly, drifting back and forth like someone had just left it behind.

Kenji slowed.

He looked down.

The overhead lights cast his shadow forward across the hallway.

It followed him perfectly.

Aligned.

Unbroken.

Nothing strange.

Nothing wrong.

Still—

the back of his neck prickled.

He kept walking.

At the far end of the corridor, the elevator doors stood closed.

Dull metal reflecting strips of flickering light.

Kenji reached the middle of the hall—

and the elevator chimed.

Soft.

Mechanical.

The doors slid open.

Empty.

He didn't step in right away.

Something in his chest tightened.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like a memory just out of reach.

He moved closer.

The lights inside the elevator buzzed faintly.

The mirrored wall reflected him clearly.

Bandaged chest.

Hospital pants.

Bare feet.

Tired eyes.

Alive.

But as he looked closer—

something appeared behind him.

Kenji froze.

The reflection showed the hallway exactly as it was.

Empty.

Still.

Except—

A tall silhouette stood several feet behind him.

No face.

No features.

Just a darker absence where something should have been.

Kenji turned slowly.

The hallway was empty.

He turned back.

The silhouette remained.

Watching him.

Kenji spoke, his voice low.

"Are you one of them?"

The reflection didn't respond.

But the lights inside the elevator dimmed slightly.

The silhouette tilted its head.

A chill crawled down his spine.

Kenji stepped inside.

The doors began to close.

Just before they sealed—

the silhouette moved.

Not in the mirror.

Behind him.

Kenji spun.

The hallway outside remained empty.

But his shadow—

had stretched.

Longer than it should have been.

The doors shut with a soft metallic click.

The elevator began to descend.

Kenji stared at the floor.

His shadow climbed the walls like black water, pulled upward by something unseen.

And slowly—

very slowly—

a second shadow rose beside it.

Not forming.

Not emerging.

Standing.

Like something had stepped into the elevator with him.
