Chapter 11 - chapter 11 the Empty corridor

The hallway smelled faintly of disinfectant and rainwater tracked in from outside.

Kenji stepped forward slowly.

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered in uneven intervals, throwing brief waves of darkness across the floor.

Hospitals never truly slept.

But this floor felt different.

Too still.

Too empty.

Kenji glanced behind him.

Room 312 stood open.

The heart monitor inside continued its long, uninterrupted scream.

BEEEEEEEEEEP.

No one had come running.

No nurses.

No alarms.

No chaos.

Just the sound echoing quietly down the corridor.

That wasn't normal.

Kenji turned back toward the hallway.

His bare feet made soft contact with the cold tile floor.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Something about the silence pressed against his ears like pressure underwater.

He passed the nurse's station.

Empty.

Computer monitors glowed softly.

Charts sat half-finished on the desk.

A chair slowly rotated back and forth as if someone had just stood up moments ago.

Kenji stopped.

He looked down.

The floor lights cast his shadow forward across the hallway.

It followed him normally now.

Perfectly aligned.

Nothing strange.

Nothing wrong.

But the back of his neck prickled anyway.

He kept walking.

At the far end of the corridor, a pair of elevator doors stood closed.

The metal reflected the hallway lights in dull streaks.

Kenji reached the center of the hall when—

The elevator dinged.

Soft.

Mechanical.

The doors slid open.

Inside, the elevator was empty.

Kenji stared at it.

Something inside his chest tightened.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like a memory trying to surface.

He stepped closer.

The elevator lights buzzed faintly.

Inside, the mirrored wall reflected his figure clearly.

Bandaged chest.

Hospital pants.

Bare feet.

Tired eyes.

Alive.

But as he stared into the mirror—

Something else appeared behind him.

Kenji froze.

The reflection showed the hallway exactly as it was.

Empty.

Except for one thing.

A tall silhouette stood several feet behind him.

A shape made entirely of shadow.

It had no face.

No features.

Just a darker absence inside the light.

Kenji slowly turned around.

The hallway was empty.

Nothing stood behind him.

He turned back toward the mirror.

The silhouette remained.

Standing still.

Watching him.

Kenji spoke quietly.

"Are you one of them?"

The reflection did not move.

But the elevator lights dimmed slightly.

The silhouette tilted its head.

Kenji felt a chill crawl across his spine.

He stepped into the elevator.

The doors began to slide shut.

Just before they closed—

The silhouette moved.

Not in the mirror.

Behind him.

Kenji spun around.

The hallway outside the elevator remained empty.

But the shadow beneath his feet had grown longer.

Much longer.

The elevator doors sealed with a soft metallic click.

The elevator began to descend.

Kenji stared at the floor.

His shadow stretched across the elevator walls like black water.

And slowly

very slowly

a second shadow rose beside it.

Standing upright.

Like someone who had just stepped into the elevator with him.
