Amara pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
Cold.
Clear.
"We have to move the money before she realizes."
Gasps spread across the room.
Daniel's face hardened.
Then Nora's voice followed.
"Yes. She'll take the blame anyway."
The crowd erupted.
My mother looked shocked.
My friends looked confused.
Daniel quickly raised his hands.
"That recording is edited."
Edited?
He sounded calm again.
Too calm.
Amara frowned.
"It's not edited."
Daniel chuckled.
"Then play the rest."
The rest?
Amara hesitated.
Just for a second.
And that was enough for the room to turn again.
"See?" Daniel said.
"She can't."
My heart dropped.
What was he talking about?
Amara slowly looked at me.
Fear in her eyes.
Because suddenly…
It felt like Daniel had expected this all along.
Had we just walked into his trap?
