Three days after the elite unit's first real battle, the forest felt different.
Not hostile. Watching. Waiting, the way a place waits once word of what's been built inside it starts to spread beyond its borders.
Copper ore had already been smelted into rough reddish ingots. Under Kael's guidance, the first crude round coins had been hammered flat, each stamped with the same simple mark — a three-headed serpent.
The mark of the Skullrend Hydra. The mark of Titanblood Tribe.
Angelika stood beside a wooden table where the coins were laid out in neat rows, her voice calm but her eyes bright with something close to anticipation.
"If this works… we won't just be strong." She glanced up at him. "We'll become necessary."
Kael nodded slightly. "Send the signal."
Arrival of the Ashriver Tribe
By noon, scouts confirmed contact. A small delegation approached cautiously from the southern forest, carrying no raised weapons — though their guards stayed alert, eyes tracking every movement around them.
They introduced themselves as the Ashriver Tribe, named for the gray riverbank they called home. Their leader stepped forward — a tall woman in her thirties, sharp-eyed, her dark hair braided tightly back.
"I am Lysa of Ashriver."
Dean stood behind Kael, arms crossed. Elara held position slightly to his right. Angelika to his left. A balanced front, deliberately so.
Kael replied evenly. "Kael. Founder of Titanblood Tribe."
Lysa's gaze swept over the organized huts, the armed guards, the visible discipline running through everything she could see. Her expression shifted slightly — impressed, but still cautious.
The Offer
Angelika stepped forward with measured grace. On the wooden table sat smoked mammoth meat, dried boar strips, leather armor pieces, and a few bone-edged swords laid out for inspection.
Lysa's eyes lingered on the weapons. "You want trade?"
"Yes," Kael said.
She crossed her arms. "What do you want?"
"Salt. Medicinal herbs. River fish oil."
Ashriver had river access Titanblood still lacked — a logical exchange, balanced on both sides. Lysa nodded slowly.
"That can be arranged."
Then Kael lifted one of the copper coins and set it on the table between them.
The Shock
Sunlight caught the reddish metal. Lysa frowned. "…What is this?"
"Value," Kael said simply.
She blinked at that. Angelika continued smoothly, stepping in to fill the gap.
"Instead of trading item for item every time, this represents stored value."
The Ashriver guards exchanged confused glances behind their leader. Lysa's voice sharpened.
"Why would we take red stone instead of meat?"
A fair question. Very fair.
Kael's Demonstration
Kael turned and handed a coin to one of his own villagers. "Go to storage. Bring one smoked mammoth leg."
The villager obeyed without hesitation, placing the coin on the storage table and returning a minute later with the meat in hand.
Lysa watched the whole exchange carefully.
"This coin guarantees you can return anytime and receive equal value," Kael said.
Angelika added, "It removes imbalance. It builds trust."
Lysa picked up the coin, turned it over in her fingers, studied the hydra symbol stamped into its face. "…And if you refuse later?"
Dean stepped forward slightly, his voice low. "We don't break agreements."
The words carried real weight behind them, and Lysa seemed to hear it.
Hesitation
The Ashriver delegation stepped aside to confer among themselves — whispers, doubt, visible concern. Currency was a strange idea to people who'd never needed one, risky in a way that raw goods simply weren't.
Lysa returned after several tense minutes, her expression serious.
"…We will test it."
Angelika didn't smile, but her shoulders eased slightly. Kael nodded once. "Good."
The First Exchange
Ashriver provided salt bundles, medicinal roots, and containers of fish oil. In return, they received copper coins — not goods, just coins, and nothing more.
They hesitated visibly before accepting them.
But they did accept them. That was enough for now.

Aftermath — Private Moment
As the Ashriver delegation departed, Elara spoke quietly to Kael.
"…You're building something bigger than survival."
Her tone wasn't jealousy this time. It was recognition, plain and unguarded.
Angelika stepped closer too. "…If they return to use the coins again…" She looked toward the southern forest, already tracing the shape of what came next. "…then we control the trade routes."
Dean grinned faintly. "…And if they don't?"
Kael's eyes turned cold. "Then they lose access."
Simple. Strategic. Powerful, in the quiet way real leverage always was.
In Ashriver territory, Lysa held the copper coin under the firelight that evening, her tribe gathered loosely around her. One of her elders murmured, "…If this works, the region changes."
Lysa turned the coin slowly, studying the hydra stamped into its surface.
"…Yes."
And far away, inside Titanblood Tribe, the Skullrend Hydra's three small heads lifted at the same moment, as if sensing — even from that distance — the beginning of something far greater than a single trade.
