Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 — “When the Red Sand Came”

Kael woke up to pain.

Not sharp.

Not sudden.

But heavy… like his body no longer belonged to him.

For a few seconds he didn't remember why.

Then—

Claws.

Teeth.

The Level 5 monster's breath on his face.

His hand instinctively moved toward his chest.

Bandages.

Thick.

Soaked faintly with dried blood.

A voice came from the shadows.

"You're alive."

Dane.

He hadn't left.

Kael tried to sit up.

The world tilted violently.

Dane pushed him back down.

"Don't."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"How long?"

"Two days."

Two days unconscious.

Two days without leadership.

Kael's eyes hardened.

"And Red Sand?"

Dane didn't answer immediately.

"That is what worries me."

The Prisoner Who Smiled

The fake chief — the cannibal infiltrator — was dragged before Kael later that evening.

He was bruised.

Chained.

But still smiling.

That smile bothered Kael more than his wound.

"You think killing one feeder changes anything?" the man whispered.

Kael didn't react.

"How many of you?" he asked calmly.

The man leaned forward slightly.

"Enough."

Silence.

Kael studied his eyes carefully.

No madness.

No fear.

Conviction.

That meant structure.

Organization.

This wasn't a savage tribe.

This was a system.

Kael turned to Dane.

"Call the neighboring chiefs."

The First Political Fire

That night, five tribal leaders sat inside the copper hall.

No feast.

No music.

Just torches and tension.

Kael walked in slowly, still injured.

He did not sit.

"If Red Sand weakens one tribe at a time," he said quietly, "who survives last?"

No one answered.

One chief finally spoke.

"They attacked us last winter."

Another added, "We thought it was sickness…"

Kael pointed at the prisoner.

"It was not sickness."

"It was harvesting."

The word echoed.

Harvesting.

Like crops.

Like cattle.

Like women.

Like children.

The room shifted.

Fear turned into something else.

Understanding.

Kael's voice dropped lower.

"Alone… you are prey."

He let that sink in.

Then—

"Together… you are a wall."

Silence.

One by one—

They nodded.

No oath.

No ceremony.

But a pact was born.

And sometimes…

Silent pacts are the strongest.

Five Nights Later

No moon.

No wind.

No warning.

The first arrow hit a roof.

Flames erupted instantly.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Screams tore through the night.

"RED SAND!" someone shouted.

They came like shadows breaking into shape.

Eighty warriors.

Ash-painted faces.

Bone weapons.

And behind them—

Cages.

Empty cages.

Dean's voice thundered:

"Shields up!"

Iron clashed with bone.

Arrows sliced through torchlight.

Children were rushed inside inner walls.

Women armed with spears stood behind barricades.

This was no longer a helpless village.

This was formation.

Strategy.

Preparation.

And Red Sand noticed.

They weren't smiling now.

The War Leader

Through the chaos—

He appeared.

Bigger than the rest.

Necklace of teeth.

Scar splitting his face.

He stepped over his own fallen warrior without blinking.

His eyes locked on Kael.

"You."

His voice carried through battle.

"You killed our feeder."

So there were more monsters.

Good.

Now it was confirmed.

Kael stepped down from the platform.

His wound throbbed violently.

System interface flickered faintly:

Physical State: 64%

Combat Risk: Critical if prolonged

He dismissed it.

If he stayed back—

Fear would spread faster than fire.

The Red Sand leader charged.

Their blades collided—

The impact sent pain exploding through Kael's ribs.

The leader was stronger.

Raw power.

Savage aggression.

But reckless.

He swung wide.

Too wide.

Kael absorbed the hit on his shield—

Felt something crack beneath his bandages—

And waited.

One mistake.

That's all it takes to end a war.

The Red Sand leader roared and lunged again—

Overcommitted.

Kael stepped inside the arc—

Twisted—

And drove his blade straight through his throat.

For a moment—

Everything went quiet.

Even the fire seemed to hesitate.

The leader dropped to his knees.

Gurgling.

Eyes wide in disbelief.

Then he fell.

Dead.

And something invisible shifted.

Red Sand warriors froze.

Just for one breath.

Dean saw it.

"Push forward!"

Iron slammed.

Arrows rained.

Half of Red Sand fled into darkness.

The rest never moved again.

Aftermath

Smoke rose with dawn.

Bodies lay scattered across dirt and ash.

Kael stood in the center.

Blood dripping from his reopened wound.

He didn't fall.

He wouldn't.

Dane approached quietly.

"This was not their full strength."

Kael nodded.

"No."

He looked toward the tree line.

This wasn't a raid.

This was a test.

And now—

Red Sand knew something dangerous existed.

A tribe that fought back.

A leader who didn't break.

A wall.

Kael's breathing was slow.

Controlled.

But inside—

He understood clearly.

The real war hadn't started yet.

Tonight—

They survived.

Tomorrow—

Red Sand would adapt.

And when predators adapt…

They stop playing.
