Hasumi Ren walked out of the laboratory. The night wind hit him squarely, carrying the desolate scent unique to the Rukongai. He walked along the mountain path toward the Seireitei, his pace steady and unhurried.
His conversation with Aizen kept replaying in his mind. Aizen's sheer insight sent a chill down Ren's spine, but it also sharpened his focus.
As he passed through a grove of withered trees, moonlight filtered through the bare branches, casting mottled shadows on the ground. The night breeze swept by, rustling the dead leaves scattered across the earth.
Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks. Just ahead, a chilling Spiritual Pressure seeped out from the darkness. Ren narrowed his eyes, his hand dropping to the hilt of his Zanpakuto.
The shadows churned like a disturbed pool of black water. The warping intensified until a figure materialized from the gloom.
Quilge Opie stepped out of the darkness. His circular glasses reflected the light, and his tall frame cast a long shadow under the moon. Clad in a spotless white uniform, his expression was austere, his gaze landing calmly on Ren. He carried no weapon, and his posture showed no intent to fight.
Ren didn't let his guard down, letting his Spiritual Pressure circulate quietly through his body.
"A Quincy?"
The corner of Quilge's mouth curled slightly. "It seems you already know who we are. That saves us an introduction. But there's no need to be tense. I didn't come to fight."
He stepped aside, revealing the space behind him. From the shadows, another figure slowly emerged. His Shihakusho was torn, exposing scabbed-over wounds beneath. His head hung low, dark hair obscuring his face and masking his expression.
Tosen Kaname.
Ren's brow furrowed. Most of Tosen's wounds had healed, but the remaining scars were still horrific to look at. He hadn't been captive for long, but he had clearly undergone brutal torture.
Ren fixed his gaze on Tosen. "Tosen?"
Ren called out testingly. Tosen stiffened for a moment, then nodded.
Quilge glanced back at Tosen before looking at Ren again. "He only sustained superficial injuries; his Spiritual Pressure is intact. We captured him, but we didn't strip him of his power."
Tosen slowly raised his head. His dark face was blank, but Ren could feel Tosen's senses locking onto him. The sensation was exactly the same as before. He said nothing, standing there like a silent stone statue.
Then, he stepped past Quilge and walked over to Ren's side without a word. His sightless eyes remained tightly closed, his expression completely unreadable.
Quilge clapped his hands and took a step forward. Ren flicked his wrist, partially unsheathing his Zanpakuto. Quilge stopped and held up both hands to show he meant no harm.
"Don't be nervous. I am here to sue for peace, and you can see my sincerity right here," his voice was calm and steady. "Our previous attack was a misunderstanding. We didn't know that research facility belonged to you, let alone that you were merely studying spatial technology rather than targeting us."
He paused.
"We deeply apologize for the oversight. As such, we have returned him to show our utmost goodwill. Furthermore, we wish to speak with your leader regarding... an alliance."
Ren remained silent. He looked at Tosen for a brief moment before turning back to Quilge.
An alliance.
Hearing that word from a Quincy set off alarm bells in his mind. Aizen had just been plotting how to use the Quincy, and now they were delivering themselves to the doorstep. It seemed both sides were playing the same game—using the other to wear down the Gotei 13.
Ren went quiet for a moment. They weren't far from the laboratory; if a fight broke out, Aizen would sense it immediately. Besides, Tosen was right there.
"Follow me."
After a brief pause, Ren turned and headed back toward the laboratory. Quilge followed him, with Tosen bringing up the rear.
Ren stopped at the laboratory entrance. "Wait here," he spoke to Quilge before stepping inside.
Aizen sat before the workbench, monitoring the changes in the Hogyoku experiment. He looked up as Ren entered. "Why are you back?"
Ren approached him and lowered his voice. "The Quincy are here. They brought Tosen back and want to discuss an alliance."
Aizen's fingers paused. His eyes narrowed slightly, a sharp gleam flashing through them. "Where are they?"
"Outside."
Aizen stood up, straightened his robes, and walked toward the door. His stride was deliberate, his face returning to its usual amiable smile. That sensation of having everything under his complete control had returned.
The door pushed open. Standing at the threshold, Aizen scanned Quilge before locking his eyes on Tosen. Tosen kept his head lowered, remaining silent. Aizen watched him for a moment, then gave a soft nod.
"It is good to have you back."
Tosen's body trembled slightly. "Lord Aizen, I was incompetent..."
"No matter."
Hearing Aizen's reassurance, Tosen fell silent for a brief moment before slowly taking his place behind Aizen.
Quilge stood his ground, observing Aizen. Their gazes locked in the air, neither speaking immediately.
"Are you the leader here?" Quilge's voice was flat, devoid of any emotion.
"Aizen Sosuke." Aizen didn't hide his identity, nor did he deign to offer any further explanation.
Quilge's eyebrow twitched slightly. "I am Quilge Opie, a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter. I have come to make contact with you on Lord Haschwalth's orders."
Aizen's eyes narrowed into slits. "The Wandenreich?"
"Our name," Quilge replied calmly. "Nine hundred years ago, we were known as the Lichtreich. Now, we are the Wandenreich. We hide within the shadows of the Seireitei, biding our time."
Aizen nodded. "And what is your purpose?"
Quilge looked at him. "To overthrow the Seireitei and conquer the Soul Society."
Absolute silence fell over the air. The two stared at each other, neither uttering a word. A subtle tension permeated the air, like two overwound strings on the verge of snapping.
"I see your sincerity," Aizen finally broke the silence, his tone placid. "Returning my subordinate proves that you genuinely wish to negotiate."
Quilge nodded. "We have no desire to make an enemy out of you. At least for now, our objectives align."
Aizen smiled. "An alliance is acceptable," Aizen said, "but I have one condition."
Quilge's brow twitched. "What condition?"
"In the future, when I move against the Seireitei, you must assist me in battle."
Quilge was silent for a moment. "That is for Lord Haschwalth to decide. I do not have the authority to grant that."
Aizen nodded. "Then return and tell him that I await his response."
Quilge straightened up. "I will relay the message. However, before that, we must ensure that the secret between us remains known to no one else. Only you know of our existence. If this leaks, the alliance is automatically void, and we will become enemies. Should that happen, the Seireitei will learn of your dealings as well."
Aizen met his gaze. "Very well. Consider that part of our pact."
Without another word, Quilge turned and walked toward the exit. Shadows swirled at the doorway, swallowing his figure whole. A few breaths later, the darkness settled back into stillness.
Aizen stood where he was, staring at the spot where the shadows had vanished, his eyes gleaming with unreadable thoughts. Ren stood behind him, keeping silent. His gaze drifted over to Tosen, who stood to the side.
Tosen kept his head down, hands hanging loosely at his sides. His Spiritual Pressure was faint, a clear sign he hadn't fully recovered. But Ren noticed a fragment abruptly drop from Tosen's side. The light radiating from the shard was identical to the Quincy fragments he had picked up before.
As the shard absorbed into Ren's body, a system prompt flashed once more.
[SYSTEM: Schrift fragment acquired. Schrift awakening progress increased by 1%.] [SYSTEM: Schrift: A - The Devourer (Awakening Progress: 2%).]
Ren's pupils dilated slightly at the system message. Tosen seemed to sense Ren's gaze and turned his head slightly. By then, Ren had already looked away nonchalantly, suppressing the sudden turbulence in his heart.
'It looks like there's more to this Tosen than meets the eye.'
A few days later, Ren slipped into the Nest of Maggots, making his way secretly to Urahara Kisuke's hidden laboratory. After Urahara let him in, Ren's footsteps faltered at the sight of the room's occupant.
Standing before the workbench was someone Ren never expected to see here. Kurotsuchi Mayuri was clad in a white lab coat, his messy blue hair sticking out wildly in all directions. His fingers flew across the experimental instruments, calibrating complex rows of data.
"This is..."
Urahara looked up, his face breaking into his usual lazy smile upon seeing Ren. "Oh, right. Let me introduce you. This is Kurotsuchi Mayuri."
Mayuri didn't look up, merely letting out a cold snort.
"Why is he here?"
Urahara sighed. "I couldn't crack the technology to breach that dimension on my own in such a short time. So, I asked for his assistance."
Ren fell silent for a moment. He knew Urahara was right. Mayuri's technical expertise was top-tier in the entire Soul Society. With his help, deciphering the Wandenreich's spatial distortion technology would be significantly accelerated.
Sensing his concerns, Urahara whispered to him in a low murmur. "Don't worry, he won't breathe a word. Besides, he only knows we are researching spatial mechanics; he's completely in the dark about Aizen and everything else."
Mayuri finally raised his head, eyeing Ren. His gaze held a bizarre, calculating scrutiny. Ren ignored it, walking over to the workbench to examine the dense clusters of data and tactical formula nodes.
"How is the progress?"
Urahara stepped up beside him, pointing to several coordinates on the blueprints. "We've located the exact nodes where that pocket dimension anchors itself onto the Soul Society's spatial barrier. These nodes are weak points connecting the two realms. If we target them, we can tear open a rift."
Mayuri scoffed. "Easier said than done. The moment you apply force to breach those nodes, the other side will detect it."
Ren's brow twitched. "Can we not slip in undetected?"
Mayuri glanced at him. "We can, but it takes time. And time happens to be the one thing you lack most right now, isn't it?"
Ren lapsed into silence. He knew Mayuri spoke the truth. Before this, time had been their greatest adversary. Aizen was investigating, the Wandenreich was investigating, and caught in the middle, they were walking a tightrope with every step.
"There's something I need to tell you." Ren pulled Urahara aside, keeping his voice barely above a whisper. "The Quincy approached Aizen. They returned Tosen and proposed an alliance."
Urahara's hand froze. "An alliance?" a note of gravity entered Urahara's voice.
"Yes." Ren briefly summarized what happened—Quilge returning Tosen, proposing the alliance, and Aizen agreeing to consider it. Both sides agreed to absolute secrecy, under the penalty of shattering the pact.
As he listened, Urahara's expression grew grim. "Things are taking a turn for the absolute worst," he finally spoke, his voice dropping low. "If Aizen and the Quincy truly join forces, the Soul Society is doomed."
Urahara lowered his head, lost in thought.
Just then, Ren spoke up again. "But there is a silver lining. The Tosen they returned is a fake."
Urahara's eyes widened slightly. "A fake?"
"Exactly," Ren nodded. "Even though the disguise is flawless, I have my ways of telling them apart. That isn't Tosen. It's a spy planted by the Quincy. They want a pawn by Aizen's side to keep tabs on him and likely steal his intelligence."
Ren locked eyes with Urahara. "Because of that, I have an idea."
Urahara's brow arched. "What kind of idea?"
Ren's voice fell to a soft whisper. "If we can infiltrate that dimension, rescue the real Tosen, and keep him under our control... we can wait until Aizen and the Quincy officially begin their cooperation to reveal the real Tosen. At that moment, Aizen will realize the Tosen beside him is an impostor. The Quincy's scheme will be exposed, and Aizen will undoubtedly turn on them."
Urahara's eyes lit up. "A bait-and-switch?"
"Exactly," Ren nodded. "The Quincy sent a fake, so we will pay them back in kind. We extract the real one, swap the imposter back into their domain, and let the truth surface when the timing is perfect."
Mayuri paused his work, turning his gaze toward Ren. For the first time, a look of genuine interest appeared in his eyes. "Now that plan actually has some merit. However, we would need to breach the Wandenreich, locate the real Tosen, and execute the swap entirely undetected. The difficulty level is astronomical. The crux of the matter is pinpointing Tosen's location. Once we have that, the rest becomes manageable."
Ren looked at him. "That's exactly where I need your help. Aren't you two already researching a way to infiltrate that dimension? The plan has shifted. Time is no longer our pressing concern. When the time comes, I will head into that world myself to track down Tosen."
Urahara furrowed his brow, pondering. "Sending you is far too dangerous. If you are compromised on enemy turf, there's a high chance you won't make it back."
Ren nodded. "I know, but don't worry. I know what I'm doing," Ren's voice remained perfectly calm.
Urahara watched him, remaining silent for a long time. Then, he let out a sigh. "Let's not rush to conclusions. There are many ways to expose a fake Tosen; we don't necessarily have to take such a reckless path."
Urahara turned back to the workbench, picking up the data sheets to recalculate. "We will shelve this matter for now. Give me a few more days, and we will secure a stable method to enter that dimension. It won't be too late to deliberate then."
Ren nodded. "Alright. I'll wait for your word."
