Chapter 215 - BJK Chapter 215 : So, It Was the Quincy

Aizen's secret laboratory maintained its usual precision and order. The examination tables stood in neat rows, with suspended soul fragments gleaming faintly inside glass vessels. In the central container, the Hogyoku hovered quietly, its soft blue light permeating every inch of the room, yet failing to dispel the tense atmosphere creeping through the air.

Hasumi Ren pushed open the stone door of the laboratory, treading as softly as possible. His eyes scanned the room; Aizen stood before the Hogyoku's container, his posture as upright and imposing as ever.

Yet Ren keenly caught a subtle difference. It was an indescribable, minute shift.

Normally, no matter the circumstances, Aizen exuded an unruffled composure, as if everything lay fully within his grasp. It was as though the entire world was merely a piece on his chessboard, and even the most unexpected anomaly could be effortlessly reoriented to his advantage. But at this moment, Aizen's expression was slightly dark, devoid of his usual serenity.

Tosen Kaname's capture and the sudden emergence of this unknown faction had, after all, fractured his perfect poise.

Ren walked over to a workbench, facing the complex charts of spiritual fluctuations and the spell matrix foundations. His fingers glided gently over the matrix as his Spiritual Pressure seeped into the nodes, calibrating the experimental data. Under the influence of the Hogyoku, the energy cluster inside the culture dish restructured slowly with a faint hum. The Hogyoku suspended in the center cast flickering shadows across his features.

This was the Hogyoku experimentation he had been entrusted with. Even though Aizen had assigned him to take over Tosen's duties and assist in the Hollowfification experiments, Ren could tell that Aizen's focus was no longer on the research at hand.

Aizen sat on the opposite side of the table, several ancient volumes laid out open before him. Their pages were yellowed with age, clearly dating back centuries. His finger traced the parchment as his eyes scanned the dense text.

Though Aizen's outward expression remained largely unchanged—retaining his characteristic composure and calm—Ren could sense a nuanced shift in his mental state. He was no longer merely the exalted mastermind orchestrating the board; he had become a target of surveillance and assault. This sort of passivity and setback was likely an entirely foreign experience for him.

Ren refrained from disturbing him, quietly continuing his work.

"Ren, set the Hogyoku experiments aside for now." Aizen's voice drifted from across the table, low and steady.

Ren's fingers paused slightly as he looked up.

Aizen remained focused on the ancient tome. "There is no urgent rush for these experiments. Our paramount objective right now is to uncover the identity of the faction lurking within the shadows."

Ren put down his research tools. "Have you discovered any leads, Lieutenant Aizen?"

Aizen did not reply immediately. He picked up one of the old volumes, flipping to a specific page, and tapped his finger lightly against the parchment.

"Nine hundred years ago, a war erupted in the Soul Society. A Quincy army calling themselves the Lichtreich invaded our world. They possessed overwhelming power, and the original Gotei 13 under the leadership of Yamamoto Shigekuni had to pay an immense price to crush them."

Ren's eyebrow twitched imperceptibly. He was well aware of this history, as it had been briefly mentioned during his classes at the Shin'o Academy, so he merely put on a well-measured look of surprise. "The Quincy?"

Aizen stepped back to the workbench, sliding the open tome toward Ren. "Take a look at this."

Ren leaned forward to inspect the illustration on the page. It was an ancient drawing depicting figures clad in pristine white uniforms, wielding bows and arrows composed of Reishi. Though the cut and specific accents differed slightly, the overarching aesthetic was a perfect match for what Haschwalth had worn that night. White cloaks, silver embroidery—stark and severe.

Ren's pupils contracted slightly. "The individual who appeared that night... was a Quincy?"

Aizen nodded. "Following their defeat at the hands of Yamamoto Shigekuni nine hundred years ago, they scattered to the winds. And a century ago, the Soul Society executed a final campaign of extermination against the surviving remnants in the World of the Living. It appears that certain elements of the Quincy did not perish entirely. Instead, they have adopted another method to conceal themselves within the very shadows of the Soul Society."

Ren looked up at Aizen, a well-timed flash of shock crossing his eyes. "They... were never completely wiped out?"

Aizen's voice was flat, yet Ren could discern the frost buried within it. "For nine centuries, their presence eluded everyone—until our Garganta experiments inadvertently brushed against their hidden dimension." He paused, his eyes turning profound. "It seems that is precisely why they struck our research installation."

Ren fell silent for a moment, his mind working at breakneck speed.

Aizen's deductions were practically a flawless match for the reality, save for the true origin of the scanning pulse. Evidently, within Aizen's current framework, it was a random spatial collision from the Garganta tests that had uncovered the Wandenreich, prompting the retaliatory strike. He remained completely oblivious to the fact that Ren had initiated the probe intentionally.

"Does that make them our enemies?" Ren asked, adding a heavy note to his tone.

The corner of Aizen's mouth turned up slightly, a blend of frigidity and appraisal. He paused, his gaze settling squarely on Ren.

"They laid hands on my subordinate. That fact is indisputable. However, that does not mean we must align ourselves against them immediately." Aizen shook his head. "At least... not yet."

He rose and paced over to the culture dish, watching the floating Hogyoku. The blue luminescence bathed his features.

"The fact that they have managed to remain concealed in the shadows for hundreds of years proves they are no simpletons. Furthermore, their immediate objective aligns perfectly with our own."

Ren looked up. "You mean..."

Aizen turned to face him. "Toppling the Gotei 13 led by Yamamoto Shigekuni."

Ren's eyes flickered slightly at the remark.

"The Quincy and the Soul Reapers bear an ancient blood feud. They didn't hide in the dark for centuries merely to eke out a miserable existence. They are biding their time for an opportunity—a chance to launch a full-scale counter-offensive against the Seireitei. This does not contradict our designs in the slightest."

A reflective glint passed through Aizen's eyes as he weighed the deeper implications.

"Therefore, we can initially feign an alliance with them. We will use the power of the Quincy to erode the strength of the Gotei 13. Once both sides have bled each other dry, we will step in to finalize our ultimate purpose. This strategy will force our hidden adversaries to show their hand early, and the ensuing chaos will play directly into our hands."

Ren observed him closely. "Do you truly believe these Quincies will buy our terms and agree to a pact?"

Aizen chuckled. "They do not need to trust us. They merely need to recognize that we share a common foe. From a purely utilitarian standpoint, our core interests do not clash." He paused, his gaze darkening with intent. "Of course, this arrangement is strictly provisional. Once the Gotei 13 has been sufficiently depleted, and the Quincy have outlived their usefulness, that will be our cue to strike."

Ren's brow twitched. "You intend to orchestrate their mutual destruction, then reap the harvest for yourself?"

Aizen nodded. "I shall utilize the power of Kyoka Suigetsu to leak information of their existence to the Seireitei. The hatred between Soul Reapers and Quincies requires no ignition from me. I merely need to make both parties aware of each other. After that, we will simply watch from the wings, waiting for the optimal moment to present itself."

Ren fell silent.

Aizen's blueprint sounded entirely bulletproof. Borrowing another's blade to slay a foe—pitting tiger against wolf. It was a textbook execution of proxy warfare. And given Aizen's unique capabilities, he possessed the means to see it through.

Yet Ren recognized that this scheme posed a lethal threat to his own survival. Should Aizen actually establish a channel with the Wandenreich and sit down at a negotiating table, the reality behind the scanning signal would inevitably unravel. Furthermore, the Quincy side possessed Royd's capacity to harvest memories. While Ren had left no conspicuous tracks, a deep dive into the matter by both parties would leave him exposed.

Ren felt a slight chill at his fingertips. "How do you plan on initiating contact with these Quincies?" he inquired, maintaining a perfectly even voice.

Aizen locked his eyes onto him. "That will be your next assignment: pinpoint that dimension and locate them. Should you establish a connection, convey our willingness to collaborate. If they remain elusive, I am confident they will take the initiative to reach out to us themselves."

Ren bowed his head. "Understood."

Aizen nodded, preparing to expand on the topic before abruptly shifting his tone. "Ren."

Ren looked up.

Aizen stared at him, his gaze sharpening significantly. "There is a matter I have been meaning to address with you. Before his capture, Tosen mentioned something to me." Aizen's voice was placid, yet it carried an underlying undercurrent. "He claimed you were making unauthorized adjustments behind the scenes during the trials. Yet when I questioned you at the time, you denied it."

Ren's fingers tightened slightly.

Aizen stood up, closing the distance between them. "Did your actions back then have any bearing on what has transpired now?"

Ren fell silent. His mind worked at breakneck speed.

Tosen had indeed dug a pit for him. The man had voiced his suspicions to Aizen beforehand, and Aizen had filed it away, waiting to tie it to the current unfolding crisis.

Aizen stared at him, his eyes deep as an abyss. Ren could feel the shifting Spiritual Pressure rolling off Aizen's frame. The sheer weight of it was a mirror image of the crushing aura at the mountain base. Yet Ren could sense that the underlying intent was not lethal. He wasn't trying to eliminate him; he was testing him. Probing his loyalty, evaluating if he remained a viable asset.

Countless strategies clashed in Ren's mind. Aizen was too perceptive. Even if he offered a flat denial right now, once they actually established contact with the Wandenreich, Aizen's meticulous nature would eventually unearth the truth. Should Aizen discover the truth via an external vector later, his predicament would turn catastrophic.

Full disclosure... was obviously out of the question. He could not mention Urahara, nor could he confess that he had intentionally triggered the scanning wave. He needed to locate a middle ground—acknowledge a fraction of the reality while withholding the critical components.

Ren took a deep breath, slowly releasing it. "I did indeed withhold some information."

Aizen's eyes narrowed into slits.

Ren maintained eye contact before lowering his gaze, keeping his tone perfectly level and candid. "During the initial Garganta trials, I intercepted an anomalous spatial fluctuation. I thought little of it at the time, but out of pure scientific curiosity, I executed a few additional scans. I never anticipated that space harbored an active presence, let alone that they would launch a retaliatory strike against us."

He paused. "It was a severe miscalculation on my part. I failed to foresee the consequences of my curiosity. The responsibility is entirely mine; I accept whatever disciplinary measures you deem necessary."

A heavy silence fell over the laboratory, save for the ambient hum of the diagnostic machinery and the faint electrical buzz of the Reishi lamps. Aizen stood perfectly still, observing Ren for a protracted duration. His analytical gaze tracked Ren's facial features, measuring the authenticity of the confession.

Ren refrained from looking up, waiting silently for Aizen's judgment. The seconds ticked by agonizingly.

Finally, Aizen exhaled a soft, brief breath. His overbearing Spiritual Pressure retracted, and the crushing weight vanished alongside it.

"In consideration of this being your first transgression, I shall grant you clemency this time." His voice was flat, yet an icy undertone remained. "But bear this in mind: next time, you will answer fully for the fallout."

Ren bowed his head. "My thanks, Lieutenant Aizen."

Aizen turned on his heel, returning to his workbench to sit. He picked up the old volume, turning back to the previous page to scan the ancient text once more. "Locate that dimension, convey our proposition, and if you manage to secure Tosen Kaname's release, consider your error redeemed. I will pursue the matter no further."

He looked up, pinning his eyes onto Ren.

Ren nodded. "Understood."

Aizen offered nothing further. He lowered his gaze, returning to his ancient tome.

Ren stood his ground, observing the man's silhouette as he internally breathed a quiet sigh of relief. He hadn't expected the crisis to resolve itself so trivially. Aizen hadn't interrogated him for finer details or probed into his motives for concealment; he had simply issued a warning and let him return to his duties.

Ren turned back to his workbench, resuming his tasks. Yet his focus was entirely detached from the research.

Aizen's clemency was born not of trust, but of calculated utility. He required Ren right now—specifically, his specialized talents. Eliminating him at this stage yielded a net loss. Within the grand blueprint, Ren still possessed substantial practical value. Furthermore, Aizen had already begun strategizing on how to leverage the Quincy as a resource.

Sitting at his bench, Aizen turned page after page of the old tome, yet his focus remained detached from the text. He was analyzing.

Ren had undoubtedly hidden facts; that reality was absolute. This level of self-interest was something Aizen could rationalize and tolerate. Unlike Tosen Kaname, who truly comprehended his worldview and philosophy, Ren's worth to Aizen was purely pragmatic. His Hollowfified physiology, his intuitive talent for spatial formulas, and his grasp of the Hogyoku—these were entirely irreplaceable assets.

With Tosen already missing, losing Ren at this critical juncture would inflict severe damage on his project. Consequently, he chose to accommodate Ren for the time being. Not due to any semblance of faith, but simply because Ren remained a necessity. After all, the situation had not yet degraded to an unmanageable degree.

Aizen closed the old volume and rose, walking over to the culture dish. The blue illumination bathed his features, leaving his expression ambiguous in the shifting light.

"Ren."

Ren looked up.

"Once you pinpoint that dimension, do not execute any rash moves. Await my direct command."

Ren gave a firm nod. "Understood."
