Never underestimate others. Qin Xiao had forgotten where he'd first heard that phrase, but it felt particularly apt now.
Waking up to see the futuristic sights outside, he stepped out to find himself suspended high in the air. Yet the old-timer from over sixty years ago remained unfazed by the spectacle.
After Qin Xiao welcomed him to heaven, Captain America merely glanced at him.
"Even before I was injected with the Super Soldier Serum, I saw cars that could hover at the Stark Expo. My friend Howard invented them. Though they ultimately failed, he told me that if science can conceive of something, its realization must be close. So... where exactly is this place?"
Qin Xiao was genuinely impressed.
*So calm! Truly worthy of Captain America!*
Nodding in admiration, Qin Xiao smiled. "Exactly! Perhaps your friend was right. He was a brilliant scientist who envisioned many future possibilities. Did he ever discuss these ideas with you?"
As Qin Xiao finished speaking, a blazing inferno erupted from his body.
Captain America: ...
In truth, one couldn't fool Captain America like an ordinary farmer from the 1940s. Decades ago, he had fought Hydra, who were already using weapons powered by the Cosmic Cube on a massive scale.
Those weapons were far more advanced than most firearms of the era.
Qin Xiao didn't know how to gradually explain things to Captain America, so he simply handed him over to Yelena. The young woman was known for her talkativeness once she gained control of the device.
Combined with a science popularization video he found online detailing human development over the past few decades, this should slowly help him come to terms with it all.
An hour later, Captain America emerged from the room looking utterly dejected.
"How did it go? Captain, did Yelena not explain things well?" Qin Xiao poked his head in to ask.
"No, she explained everything perfectly. She even showed me fascinating things—mobile phones, the internet, landing on the moon... I just..." Captain America's voice trailed off, heavy with disappointment.
"I just... have another date!"
Qin Xiao advised Captain America to stay on Sky Base for a while, slowly getting to know this world decades later. Once he felt he understood it well enough, he could venture out to explore and then decide what to do next.
Meanwhile, he asked Natasha and the others to tell him about the outside world, especially about S.H.I.E.L.D., the Red Room they destroyed, and so on.
In truth, this was just Qin Xiao pushing his own agenda. His central argument was that organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D. were too entangled in politics and the personal ambitions of politicians. To achieve truly good things and make the world a better place, independent groups like Qin Xiao's, unbound by such constraints, were far more effective.
Of course, this was a matter of perspective. In a superhero world, both approaches complemented each other. But through subtle influence, Qin Xiao was confident that Captain America would eventually side with him.
Even if Captain America joined S.H.I.E.L.D., Qin Xiao wouldn't mind. Once Hydra's true nature was exposed, he believed Captain America would make the same choice he did in the movies.
Qin Xiao actually had his own selfish motives regarding Hydra. He planned to wait until after the Battle of New York to ensure the Scarlet Witch's emergence.
Of course, that was all in the future. The immediate problem facing Qin Xiao was Nick Fury.
Nick Fury had lost count of how many times Qin Xiao had infuriated him to the point of smashing things.
Destroying the Red Room and killing Dreykov wasn't the real issue for Nick Fury.
What caused widespread unease was Qin Xiao's acquisition of all of Dreykov's forces.
And the audacity of this bastard to brazenly move that damn Sky Base right outside New York!
What must those politicians in the White House be thinking? This wasn't the chaotic East Europe!
He even had the gall to claim it was 100 kilometers off the coast, legally on international waters, and outside any nation's airspace.
*Fuck!*
Seeing Natasha's resignation letter on his desk only made Nick Fury's headache worse.
To be frank, Nick Fury knew his capable subordinate well. She would never make such a decision based on personal feelings.
The real reason, he suspected, was the thousands of Widows scattered across the globe who were still housed in the Red Room. Natasha was undoubtedly trying to protect them.
"Sigh!"
With a helpless sigh, Nick Fury picked up the phone on his desk.
"Prepare a jet for me, Agent Hill. I want to inspect the Sky Base Qin Xiao brought back."
A S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet slowly landed on the Sky Base.
"Welcome, Director Fury!"
JARVIS, the AI now managing the base as Tony Tony began his renovations, connected the aircraft's comms.
"Oh, JARVIS, it's you. It seems Stark has really poured himself into this base, even using his private butler to manage it. Compared to this, the Avengers Base in New York looks positively shabby!"
Nick Fury's sarcastic tone dripped with disdain as he stepped off the plane and strode into the base.
Truth be told, Qin Xiao and the others had directly stormed the Red Room and seized the base.
This further solidified Nick Fury's conviction in the righteousness of his Avengers Initiative.
In the current global landscape, large-scale wars were prohibitively expensive and fraught with too many variables.
Take the Red Room, for example, an infamous international spy organization. They hadn't been able to completely eradicate it.
Even setting aside the Red Room's use of Widows to control vast numbers of politicians and tycoons, and their invisible influence over global economics and politics, the combat aspect alone presented challenges. A full-scale military invasion would inevitably cause unnecessary complications and was impractical.
But sending in an elite squad? It wouldn't be enough to take down such a far-reaching organization.
Qin Xiao and his team, however, were powerful and agile, and they didn't have to worry about protocol. This was their advantage.
But on the flip side, an uncontrolled organization like theirs was also genuinely concerning.
This was the primary reason Nick Fury had come today: to bring them under control.
Standing in a reception room, where a Widow had led him, he gazed at the sky through the glass.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had recently developed a new type of aircraft carrier that could fly into the sky. While useful as a temporary base or mobile unit, it wasn't as suitable as the current base.
"Oh, Nick! Why do you always stand like that when you're waiting? It reminds me of those damn melodramatic soap operas—tilting your head forty-five degrees to the sky so your tears won't fall, right?"
