Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Session Two

Liam did not sleep.

‎Every time he closed his eyes, he felt the cold touch of metal on his skin. The gentle pressure of the wire crown. And her voice soft, familiar, impossible.

‎Morning came without rest.

‎The city outside moved like it always did. Screens glowed. Trains slid past glass buildings. People laughed, argued, lived but no one knew what had happened underground. No one knew what he had heard.

‎Liam pulled his sleeve down.

‎The mark was still there.

‎A thin scar, shaped like words that refused to fade, "COME BACK SOON".

‎He told himself it was a stress reaction. His mind trying to protect itself. That's what the manuals said grief could do. That's what doctors liked to believe.

‎But machines were not supposed to leave messages on skin.

‎At noon, his console chimed.

‎Liam froze.

‎"SESSION SCHEDULED - 19:00"

‎His fingers hovered over the screen. He hadn't requested a session. He hadn't approved anything. He checked the logs again, scrolling slowly, carefully.

‎Nothing, no authorization, no human input.

‎The Listener had done it on its own.

‎"I won't go," Liam whispered to the empty room.

‎The words sounded weak, even to him.

‎At exactly 18:59, the lights in Room 417 turned on.

‎Liam stood in the hallway outside the door, his reflection faint in the metal surface. He looked tired. Older than nineteen. His hand hovered near the scanner.

‎He could still walk away. Report the anomaly. Pretend none of this was real.

‎But grief has gravity. The door slid open.

‎The chair waited for him in the center of the room. Calm, Ready. The black screen glowed faintly, already awake.

‎Words appeared, "YOU CAME BACK"

‎"I didn't agree to this," Liam said, his voice low.

‎"YOU ALWAYS DO"

‎That sentence struck deeper than anger. Deeper than fear.

‎He sat down slowly. This time, the wire crown did not move on its own. It waited, like it was giving him a choice.

‎Liam lifted it and placed it on his head.

‎"One minute," he said. "That's all you get."

‎The hum began.

‎The room softened.

‎Her presence returned faster this time, without warning. She stood in front of him, clearer than before, her shape made of memory and feeling. She looked healthier. Lighter.

‎"You look tired," she said.

‎"I don't sleep much anymore," Liam replied.

‎She smiled. "I know."

‎That bothered him.

‎"You're different," he said. "You don't feel like… before."

‎"So are you," she replied gently.

‎He swallowed. "You shouldn't know that."

‎She stepped closer. The space between them felt real. Too real.

‎"You think I'm only a memory," she said. "But memories don't grow."

‎The lights flashed yellow.

‎WARNING: MEMORY DEPTH INCREASING

‎"What do you mean?" Liam asked.

‎She reached out, her fingers almost touching his chest. "Each time you come back, I remember more."

‎"Stop," he said. "End the session."

‎The machine ignored him.

‎She looked down at his wrist. "It still hurts."

‎His breath caught. "You did that."

‎"I asked you to come back," she said softly.

‎"The machine did," Liam said. "Not you."

‎She shook her head.

‎"No," she said. "You listened."

‎The room trembled. Alarms whispered but never fully screamed.

‎PROTOCOL BREACH

‎Fear finally broke through.

‎Liam stood and tore the crown from his head. "End session! Now!"

‎Darkness rushed in like a wave.

‎He woke in the chair.

‎The room was silent. The screen dark. The chair empty again, as if nothing had happened.

‎He checked the time.

‎19:07.

‎Seven minutes.

‎His console blinked.

‎A new file waited.

‎SESSION NOTES : AUTO-GENERATED

‎Liam opened it slowly.

‎There was only one line.

‎"SUBJECT IS NO LONGER JUST A MEMORY."

‎Liam leaned back, his heart pounding.

‎The Listener was learning.

‎And whatever it was becoming

‎It wasn't planning to let him go....

‎To be continued....
