Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Patterns

‎Chapter 5: Patterns

‎Liam did not move.

‎The hallway outside his apartment was silent, the yellow light flickering above like a dying pulse. The door stood half open, just wide enough to feel wrong. He was certain, absolutely certain,he had locked it before leaving for the facility.

‎Inside, Lara stood in the middle of the room as if she had been waiting for hours.

‎The book rested in her hands.

‎For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

‎"You shouldn't be here," Liam said finally.

‎Lara looked up. Her sharp eyes searched his face, measuring something he could not see. She looked different from the intern he had met that morning. Less nervous. More… awake.

‎"I know," she replied. "But you weren't answering your phone."

‎"I don't give my number to interns."

‎"You didn't."

‎A beat of silence.

‎"Then how....."

‎"That's not important right now."

‎Liam's gaze dropped to the book. The same old leather cover. The same strange weight in the air around it. Even from the doorway, he could feel it. Like pressure behind his eyes.

‎"Where did you get that?" he asked.

‎Lara's fingers tightened slightly on the edges. "You left it in the observation room."

‎"I didn't."

"Yes. You did."

‎"No," Liam said again, quieter this time. "I didn't."

‎The silence stretched.

‎Lara studied him. "You really don't remember."

‎It wasn't a question.

‎Liam stepped inside and closed the door slowly behind him. "Why are you in my apartment?"

‎"I wanted to see if it would react."

‎"React?"

‎"To you."

‎The word hung between them.

‎Liam felt irritation rising. "You broke into my home to run an experiment?"

‎"I didn't break in," Lara said.

‎"Then how did you get inside?"

‎She hesitated.

‎"That," she said, "is also not important."

‎Liam exhaled sharply. "Everything you're saying is important."

‎But Lara wasn't listening. She was watching him.

‎"Something changed today," she said. "In Room 417."

‎Liam's chest tightened. "You shouldn't be talking about that outside the facility."

‎"You shouldn't be doing half the things you're doing either."

‎The words landed harder than they should have.

‎He walked closer. The air around the book felt colder. He could almost hear a faint sound—like distant static.

‎"What do you want?" he asked.

‎"To understand."

‎"Then ask your supervisor."

‎Her expression hardened. "Dr. Vale is not interested in understanding."

‎That caught his attention.

‎"What is he interested in?"

‎Lara didn't answer immediately. Instead, she held the book out slightly. "Take it."

‎Liam didn't move.

‎"Why?"

‎"Because it belongs to you."

‎"I've never seen that before this week."

‎"I know."

‎"Then how does it belong to me?"

‎Lara's voice dropped. "Just take it."

‎The silence pressed in.

‎Slowly, reluctantly, Liam reached out.

‎The moment his fingers touched the cover, something shifted.

‎Not in the room.Inside his head.

A whisper brushed against his thoughts.

‎Not words, not sound, recognition.

‎He pulled his hand back immediately.

‎Lara watched closely. "You felt it."

‎"I don't know what you're talking about."

‎"Liam."

‎"I said I don't know."

‎The irritation in his voice surprised even him.

‎For a moment, Lara looked almost disappointed.

‎"You're already too deep," she said quietly.

‎"Too deep in what?"

‎She shook her head. "You won't listen yet."

‎"Try me."

‎But she stepped back instead.

‎"I didn't come here to help you," she said.

‎The words were sharp. Final.

‎"I came to warn you."

‎"About what?"

‎Lara met his eyes.

‎"Dr. Vale is watching you."

‎Liam let out a short laugh. "He's my supervisor. Of course he's watching me."

‎"No," Lara said. "Not like that."

‎The room felt smaller.

‎"He's building a profile. Psychological. Behavioral. Emotional dependency patterns."

‎Liam frowned. "For what?"

‎"I don't know yet. But today, when the system ignored his commands, he wasn't afraid of the machine."

‎She paused.

‎"He was afraid of you."

‎The words settled like ice.

‎"That's ridiculous."

‎"Is it?"

‎"Yes."

‎"Then why did he ask for your full neural history this afternoon?"

‎Liam's breath caught.

‎"How do you know that?"

‎"I work in the data wing after hours."

‎"You're an intern."

‎"I'm a lot of things."

‎The silence returned.

‎Outside, a distant car passed. The sound felt unreal.

‎Liam looked at the book again.

‎"What is this?" he asked.

‎Lara's gaze followed his.

‎"I don't know."

‎"You expect me to believe that?"

‎"I expect you to be smart enough to stay away from it."

‎"Then why bring it here?"

‎"Because," she said, "if I left it there, he would take it."

‎The implication settled slowly.

‎"You think he wants it."

‎"I think he knows more about it than anyone."

‎Liam ran a hand through his hair. "This is insane."

‎"Yes," Lara agreed. "It is."

‎Another silence.

‎Then Liam asked the question he had been avoiding.

‎"Why do you care?"

‎Lara didn't answer immediately.

‎Instead, she moved toward the door.

‎"Because I've seen this before," she said.

‎Liam stiffened. "Seen what?"

‎She stopped with her hand on the handle.

‎"People like you."

‎"What does that mean?"

‎"They start the same way."

‎A pause.

‎"Curiosity. Obsession. Isolation."

‎Liam felt something twist in his chest.

‎"And how do they end?" he asked.

‎Lara opened the door.

‎"They don't."

‎The hallway light flickered again.

‎She stepped outside.

‎Then she turned back once more.

‎"Don't go to the facility tomorrow," she said.

‎"Why?"

‎But she was already walking away.

‎The door remained open.

‎The apartment felt colder than before.

‎Liam stood alone.

‎The book sat on his table.

‎Waiting.

‎After a long time, he approached it again.

‎He told himself he would only look.

‎Only observe.

‎Nothing more.

‎His fingers touched the cover.

‎The whisper returned.

‎Clearer this time.

‎Closer.

‎And for the first time, it spoke.

‎Not to his ears.

‎To his mind.

‎You came back.

‎Liam's breath stopped.

‎The room around him seemed to fade.

‎The whisper softened.

‎Tomorrow, we go deeper.

‎Liam did not pull his hand away.
