Chapter 44 - 44 MAKI

AM N. NOT.

šŸ–•šŸ»

The words Maki spoke were not some fluke. They were not empty nonsense.

He whispered, "The world has changed."

Yoruichi did not understand how those words connected to the look in his eyes.

Then she saw him stand from his chair, his head lowered. His face was completely hidden behind the curtain of his long black hair.

He walked out of the tree house. With every step, his hair swayed gently behind him.

Yoruichi followed him to the door.

Maki stepped onto the branch outside. He walked across its wide surface without hesitation. When he reached the very end, where the wood narrowed into nothing—

He did not stop.

He took another step.

And he fell.

Yoruichi's chest tightened.

He was truly lost.

Nemuri, Mei, and Nemu did not understand what was happening either. He had been fine earlier. Calm. Stable.

Now he looked like a man unraveling.

Still, none of them moved to save him.

They were not worried about him getting hurt.

They knew how durable he was.

While they stood there in confusion—

Maki was cursing himself.

[Maki's POV]

Fuck… fuck…

How did I not see this?

How am I still thinking this world is the same as mine?

How did I spend all these years acting like I'm still in a place where I just live and hunt for food?

How… tell me how…

Ten years.

For ten fucking years I didn't realize it.

Fuuuck.

That's right.

This world is different.

Far too different.

I'm such a fool.

Come on, Maki. Wake up.

You're not in your hometown anymore.

You're not a fisherman.

You're just Maki.

Maki of this world.

And I can't go back.

I died.

Someone… someone gave me another chance.

He let out a broken laugh.

"Hahahahaha…"

I really am a fool.

I died once already.

I lost everything.

I'm such a damn fool.

His laughter slowly faded.

Silence wrapped around him as he fell through the air.

Then he whispered—

"Mother…"

Looks like even in another life… you were right.

When you gave me my name, I thought it meant something simple. I thought "Maki" meant to roll—like sushi. Like fish. Because we were fishermen.

That reasoning made sense.

å·»ć — to roll.

But now…

Now I understand.

真希.

True Hope.

A harsh laugh tore from his throat.

"Hahahahahaha…"

What a fool I've been.

Mother… don't worry.

I'm doing just fine.

As he fell, he felt something brush against his head.

A gentle pat.

Maybe it was just the wind.

But it felt real.

A touch that chased away nightmares.

A touch that taught him how to survive.

A touch that told him he was loved.

Tears streamed down his face.

"Thank you, Mother… thank you so much…"

He looked up at the red sky. Closed his eyes.

"There's no net… and most of all, I ain't a fucking fish."

His right hand clenched.

Violet veins bulged along his arm.

He twisted midair and faced the ground below.

And he laughed.

"Hahahaha… bear witness. A fool just realized he wasn't meant to roll—he was meant to become what his mother named him. True Hope."

Power gathered in his fist.

Yoruichi felt it instantly.

The pressure in the air thickened.

"T-this is bad…"

The black ribbon wrapped around Maki's wrist began to malfunction.

In the monitoring room, alarms blared across Nemu's screen.

"What's happening?" Mei demanded.

"The ribbon is destabilizing," Nemu replied, eyes wide.

Nemuri stood frozen, watching.

She did not know what had changed inside him.

But the expression on his face—

It made her left eye sting.

She had never seen him like that before.

It was as if something buried deep within him had finally shattered.

And for the first time—

He looked free.

A smile curved across her lips.

They all saw it.

Maki was smiling as he fell.

Not a grin of madness.

Not a smirk of arrogance.

A smile of release.

Then he spoke.

Not a whisper.

Not a scream.

A declaration.

"Hahahahaha…"

"World Destroyer…"

"Moa Moa no… Hyakubai…"

The air roared.

VROOOOOOOOM—

BOOOOOOOOM—

Just before impact, Maki released the punch—multiplied a hundredfold.

His Hashirama physique.

His Arrancar nature.

The hundredfold amplification of the Moa Moa.

All of it descended like judgment upon the Chamber.

CRAAAAAAAAAACK—

The ground split apart.

The forest shuddered.

Destruction rippled outward.

This entire forest—

Was about to be erased.

And somewhere beyond the chaos—

A voice echoed.

"Hahahahaha…"

"Welcome, Maki… the soul in whom True Hope resides."
