BWDC:SDDK Chapter 93: The Person Tailoring Makoto Kusakabe

"Mr. Mouri, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the help you gave me before."

Makoto Kusakabe was completely unaware that his phone had already vanished. He sat opposite Mouri Kogoro, his choice of words, attire, and posture all exceptionally formal. This forced the usually relaxed Mouri Kogoro to subconsciously straighten up and follow suit.

"Ah, er, is—is that so?" Mouri Kogoro replied instinctively before coming to his senses. "Ah, it's nothing, nothing at all! It's what I should do."

"After all, I am the world's number one great detective, Mouri Kogoro! If I saw someone in danger and just stood by, I might as well throw away the title of detective and start over as a trainee!"

Once the floodgates opened, Mouri Kogoro began to talk more and more. At first, he sounded somewhat reasonable, but as he went on, Conan found it increasingly difficult to keep a straight face.

Claims of being the "world's greatest detective," possessing "observation and insight far beyond ordinary people"—it was hard to imagine these words coming from a middle-aged man twice his age. He sounded more like some arrogant junior high school brat playing detective.

Conan sat to the side, watching Mouri Kogoro and Makoto Kusakabe chat. His mouth twitched; he found this kind of social obligation incredibly boring. While Makoto Kusakabe had supposedly invited Mouri Kogoro out to express his thanks, in reality, it was just Mouri Kogoro unilaterally boasting about his own exploits.

Kusakabe spent the entire time simply listening to the boasting. However, Mao Lilan, sitting nearby, was slowly eating a donut, seemingly unbothered. Unlike Conan, she had no idea that her father's "Sleeping Detective" persona was Conan's doing. She truly believed Mouri Kogoro was a brilliant detective. Aside from times when he bragged in inappropriate settings, she never spoiled her father's fun and always listened quietly.

---How annoying.

Conan sighed. If he weren't waiting to see if Ren Ichimonji would plant a tracker on Makoto Kusakabe, he would have left to play elsewhere long ago. Even playing hide-and-seek with the Junior Detective League would be more interesting than listening to Uncle Mouri brag about stories he'd heard at least several hundred times.

Just as Conan was sighing at the endless self-praise, Ren Ichimonji, who had been sitting by the counter, finally stood up. This made Conan snap to attention. He watched Ren Ichimonji walk step by step toward Kusakabe's table, his focus sharpening instantly.

Noticing Ren Ichimonji approaching, even Mouri Kogoro instinctively stopped his bragging. He looked at the approaching Ren Ichimonji with a puzzled expression, suddenly remembering that Ren Ichimonji had mentioned wanting to meet Kusakabe this afternoon.

Mouri Kogoro was about to stand up to introduce Ren Ichimonji to Kusakabe, but to the surprise of both men, Ren Ichimonji placed a hand on Kusakabe's shoulder.

A moment later, he whispered, "Prosecutor Kusakabe, look out the glass wall, thirty degrees to your right front."

"Do you recognize that person?"

---What?

Kusakabe was startled. Mouri Kogoro, sitting opposite him, also heard Ren Ichimonji's words. However, since he was facing Kusakabe, it wasn't easy to see what was behind him. By the time he turned his head, the spot was already empty.

Yet, Mouri Kogoro knew Ren Ichimonji wasn't playing a prank. The moment Makoto Kusakabe looked in that direction, his face darkened significantly.

---There was someone there just a moment ago.

And it was someone who had left a deep impression on Makoto Kusakabe.

As an ace prosecutor in the Public Security Department of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, Makoto Kusakabe had formed a partnership with the equally justice-minded Fumikazu Haba.

However, an accident occurred while Fumikazu Haba was conducting an undercover investigation into a gaming company case. Yuya Kazami, an officer from the National Police Agency Public Security Bureau, led a team to make arrests. Fumikazu Haba was arrested along with the criminals.

At the time, the moment Kusakabe heard the news, he rushed to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He intended to confess that Haba was an undercover agent he had sent into the gaming company. He was willing to lose his position as a prosecutor to save him.

But when he reached the entrance of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Kusakabe hesitated. During their last meeting, Haba had explicitly asked him not to reveal their connection; he wanted Kusakabe to protect his status as a prosecutor so he could help more people achieve justice in the future.

While Kusakabe was hesitating, tragic news arrived. During an interrogation by the Public Security Bureau, it was said that an accident led to Fumikazu Haba's death.

The name of the Public Security officer who had been in charge of Haba's interrogation was—

"Rei Furuya..."

Kusakabe's eyes narrowed slightly. In that instant, a flash of disgust and hatred surfaced in his gaze.

Why was that officer named Rei Furuya still secretly tracking him? Did Rei Furuya already know about his relationship with Fumikazu Haba? If so, why hadn't he reported it? Was he planning to use it for blackmail later to get other information? Money? Or something else?

Kusakabe felt a deep-seated hatred for these Public Security officers who abused their power.

At that exact moment, Conan, who had been closely observing both Kusakabe and Ren Ichimonji, keenly captured that abnormal emotion.

---Murderous intent.

Conan could say with certainty that Kusakabe had just directed killing intent toward the figure he hadn't managed to see clearly. Even though it was suppressed in an instant, Conan believed he hadn't misread it.

He couldn't help but recall Ren Ichimonji's previous words:

[Makoto Kusakabe is going to bring a satellite down to nuke the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the National Police Agency.]

[He will tell you that for the sake of justice, some sacrifices are only natural.]

Conan's heart sank. Had even a world-renowned prosecutor like Makoto Kusakabe reached such an extreme breaking point?

In all of Beika Town, was there not a third sane person besides himself and Ran?

"Forgive me, Detective Mouri, I have some matters to attend to. I'll be taking my leave first."

Kusakabe pulled back his chair and stood up, apologizing as he prepared to go. He looked at Ren Ichimonji beside him and said, "Sir, thank you for your help just now."

"If possible, may I know your name?"

Ren Ichimonji narrowed his eyes slightly and said:

"I'm Batman."

---Batman? Bat?

A flash of surprise crossed Kusakabe's eyes. Although the Prosecutors' Public Security Department and the Police Public Security Bureau were not the same system, he could still obtain some intelligence from the police side. He knew very well the word that the man named Teiji Moriya kept repeating in the interrogation room.

[Bat].

"A pleasure to meet you," he said. "I am Makoto Kusakabe, a prosecutor with the Public Security Department of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office."

"I hope we can meet again in a different place next time."

Leaving behind a business card, Makoto Kusakabe departed.

Ren Ichimonji looked at the business card with the phone number for a moment before tucking it into his bag. He then asked casually, "Uncle Mouri, aren't you going back to sleep?"
