BWDC:SDDK Chapter 85: Ninja Art: Alibi Creation Technique? Have You Finally Lost Your Mind?

Daytime, Mouri Detective Agency.

Ring ring, ring ring—

The telephone blared.

Lying on the sofa, Mouri Kogoro reached out, groping blindly at his surroundings. After fumbling for a while, he finally located the phone, picked it up, and pressed it to his ear.

"This is the Mouri Detective Agency, Mouri Kogoro speaking."

"I'm feeling a bit under the weather right now. If you have business, call back later..."

"What do you mean you found my business card at a crime scene and want me to cooperate with the investigation?"

Mouri Kogoro: ?

Wait, brother, am I a criminal suspect again?!

Having stayed up all night waiting for further news reports, Mouri Kogoro forced himself to sit up, his eyes framed by heavy dark circles.

He spoke in a strangely hollow tone, "Location. Give me the location. I'm coming over now."

"If I get to Beika North Park and you tell me you just misread the name on the card, then I'm warning you, Chiba Kazunobu—you'd better sleep with one eye open tonight!"

He was seeing red—truly seeing red.

Mouri Kogoro let out a long sigh and gently pushed aside the small head of the sleeping Conan. He summoned what little energy he had left to wash up in the bathroom, then threw on his suit jacket, preparing to head out.

Just as he came downstairs, Mouri Ran, who was about to start preparing breakfast, asked in surprise, "Dad? Why are you up so early today?"

"You didn't sleep at all last night. Shouldn't you be catching up on sleep this morning?"

This was a first. At least in Ran's memory, if her father pulled an all-nighter, he would invariably sleep through most of the following day.

"There's a case at Beika North Park. They want me to cooperate with the investigation."

"...Ugh, what a pain."

Mouri Kogoro yawned, about to step out the door. He glanced back at Conan and muttered in a low voice, "That kid stayed up with me all night watching the news. He only just fell asleep."

"Don't wake him for breakfast. Let him sleep until lunch."

Although he still felt a strange sense of irritation toward Conan—that brat who was always running around crime scenes—he was still a child. He could manage to show a little understanding and care.

Hearing this, Ran smiled and nodded. "Okay~ Dad~"

"Don't use that tone with me!"

Mouri Kogoro made a hasty retreat through the door.

Ran pushed the door open and shouted after him, "Dad, are you coming back for lunch?"

Mouri Kogoro's figure gradually receded into the distance. His voice drifted back on the wind.

"Save some for me! If things go smoothly, I'll be back soon!"

Beika North Park.

Chiba Kazunobu, who was currently examining the body at the scene, rubbed his chin. He had been looking for a long time, but aside from the fact that the deceased was male, he hadn't reached any conclusions.

—As expected, I still need to notify the Forensics Department!

Chiba stopped pretending and stood up straight. He yawned, thinking about heading back to sleep once the case was handled. Then, a voice that sounded like it crawled out of hell appeared behind him.

"Officer Chiba... look at me!"

"Tell me, what does this body have to do with anything? Where's the card? Where is the business card?"

Chiba, who had been feeling drowsy, snapped to attention in fright. He turned stiffly to see Mouri Kogoro, whose dark circles were as heavy as a panda's. For a moment, he didn't even recognize who it was. He almost thought a male ghost from the morgue had come to claim him.

"G-G-Ghost...!" Chiba cried out.

Mouri Kogoro: ?

Do you think people who pull all-nighters have good tempers? Why don't you try saying that one more time? You want to see how good my judo is?

The stiff atmosphere at the scene finally shifted when Inspector Megure arrived, also sporting heavy dark circles.

Megure yawned and looked at Mouri Kogoro, saying with total bewilderment, "Mouri-kun, why do you have dark circles just like mine?"

"I stayed up half the night investigating the Teiji Moriya bombing case. Were you working a case too?"

Mouri Kogoro replied gloomily, "I waited for the follow-up reports until dawn."

"Why did the TV Tokyo helicopters pull out? TV Tokyo's helicopters can usually sync up with police cars; they must have had a live broadcast permit from the police. Why would they leave halfway through?"

Mouri Kogoro's question was quickly answered. Inspector Megure said resentfully, "TV Tokyo's helicopters never had a filming permit!"

"They received a tip from an informant, so they set out at the same time we did. It wasn't until the helicopters were hovering right over the warehouse that our people on the ground confirmed with headquarters and realized we never contacted the station for a broadcast. So, the helicopters were forced to retreat. Why did you think Superintendent General Hakuba would allow filming?"

—Uh, isn't Superintendent General Hakuba someone who likes a bit of excitement?

Mouri Kogoro blinked, stunned. He stopped dwelling on that issue and shifted his focus to the scene of this violent incident.

Though he felt exhausted, he wasn't sure if that all-powerful "Real Me" would jump out to solve the case if he fell asleep. Therefore, he decided to force himself to stay awake and observe the situation first.

"What's at the scene? And don't tell me it's just my business card. If you say that, I'm really going to give you a shoulder throw!"

Hearing this, Officer Chiba hurriedly replied, "We found the victim's driver's license, which serves as identification. I checked—the victim's name is Yuichi Kusaka, 26 years old, from Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. His reason for coming to Tokyo is unknown, but he had Detective Mouri's business card in his wallet. That's why I asked you to assist with the investigation."

—Yuichi Kusaka?

Mouri Kogoro rubbed his chin. He felt like he had heard that name somewhere before. However, for the life of him, he couldn't remember where.

"Damn it... don't let me down at a critical moment!"

Mouri Kogoro slapped his own forehead. Watching this, Inspector Megure fell silent.

—It's time to invite a more authoritative detective to help.

Mouri-kun has burned out. He took out his phone and sent a message to that man. Like Commissioner Gordon lighting the Bat-Signal in Gotham City!

There was no time to mourn the burned-out Mouri Kogoro. Arriving at the scene the very next moment was—

Batman!

Ren Ichimonji straightened his clothes and arrived at Beika North Park. He glanced at the body on the grass. Then, he asked, "What's the situation?"

Chiba Kazunobu immediately said, "It's a Ninja Art!"

"It's the Ninja Art: Alibi Creation Technique!"

Ren Ichimonji: ?

Ninja Art: Alibi Creation Technique? Have you finally lost your mind?
