BWDC:SDDK Chapter 83: What? TV Tokyo Isn't Even Airing Cartoons?!
The police cars of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department roared past the Mouri Detective Agency.
Mouri Kogoro, who was in the middle of enjoying a few beers, turned his head in confusion toward the speeding vehicles, a hint of doubt flickering in his eyes. It's this late... what's going on?
Deploying this many patrol cars at once? Did Kaito Kid show up again or something?
Mouri Kogoro turned and called out to Mouri Ran.
"Ran, turn on the TV for me. See if Kaito Kid is pulling another stunt today."
"Why are there so many police cars out today?"
Mouri Ran, who was washing the dishes from their late-night snack, gave a quick response. She dried the water from her hands with a towel before pressing the power button on the remote.
To her surprise, TV Tokyo—the channel the television was currently set to—wasn't airing cartoons. Instead, it was broadcasting a live breaking news report on a criminal case!
"Ah, Dad, look! Something huge happened!"
"TV Tokyo actually isn't showing cartoons!" Ran exclaimed.
Hearing this, Mouri Kogoro's head snapped toward the screen, a beer can still dangling from his hand.
What? TV Tokyo stopped airing cartoons?
Then things were indeed serious.
It was common knowledge that TV Tokyo never diverted to the news coverage of other stations; they only broadcasted anime. If even TV Tokyo had dropped their programming, it could only mean that the situation was dire.
"What is it? What happened?"
Conan, who had been ready for bed, performed a sliding dash down the stairs and arrived next to the parlor. He looked up at the TV just as the host was introducing the situation.
"At 11:45 PM, the famous Beika City architect, Teiji Moriya, announced his criminal plan to blow up the Beika City Building to Inspector Megure of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police!"
"He claims that the explosives recently stolen from the warehouse were all taken by him and have been entirely converted into plastic explosives!"
"Furthermore, these actions are the result of Teiji Moriya harboring a desire for revenge against Shinichi Kudo, due to Kudo's report that led to the imprisonment of Mayor Okamoto of Nishitama City for murder!"
"Everyone, the situation is currently extremely critical. We will continue to follow the report!"
Conan was just wondering what could be so urgent when he heard that it actually involved him. He was completely stunned.
Mayor Okamoto of Nishitama City?
Yes, it seems like I did send a guy like that behind bars. But what does that have to do with Teiji Moriya? I've never even met the man, yet he's going this big just to take my life? Is this some kind of joke?
The news helicopter continued to move toward the warehouse Moriya had mentioned.
As if to prove that the claims made during the police call were not empty threats, a sudden flash of fire from an explosion erupted in the deserted area near the warehouse. The sound was so intense it startled both the host and the cameraman inside the helicopter.
If they had previously thought this might be a hoax, this explosion was concrete proof that the person who delivered the message was telling the truth. Teiji Moriya really was the explosives thief, and he intended to blow up the Beika City Building!
Conan watched the scene, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper.
Strange. This is way too strange.
If Teiji Moriya really wanted revenge on me, stole that many explosives, and planned to level the Beika City Building, why would he tell the Tokyo Metropolitan Police? Why would he detonate explosives in a deserted area near a warehouse just to prove he wasn't lying?
"Could it be..."
A bizarre possibility suddenly occurred to Conan.
If the person declaring war on the police isn't Teiji Moriya, but someone else using his voice... then everything would make sense!
"Eh? Mr. Teiji Moriya wants revenge on Shinichi?!"
Ran gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. She quickly rummaged through her bag and pulled out the invitation to the Moriya tea party for the afternoon of May 3rd.
Seeing the invitation in Ran's hand, Conan's eyes widened even further. Because the writing on that invitation was crystal clear:
—Teiji Moriya invited him to the Moriya Villa for a tea party on the afternoon of May 3rd!
Wait, that invitation was addressed to me. Why do you have it...
Just as the thought crossed Conan's mind, he realized the answer.
Oh, right. Ran goes to the Kudo residence to clean every now and then. She probably glanced at the mailbox and picked it up. Honestly... she could have told me sooner...
But why May 3rd? Is there something special about that date?
While Conan was thinking, Ran continued.
"May 4th is Shinichi's birthday. I was thinking of asking Shinichi to go to the tea party on the 3rd, and then heading to Cinema 1 at the Beika City Building that evening to watch a movie. I never imagined Mr. Moriya would do something so cruel..."
Wait? Going to Cinema 1 at the Beika City Building on the night of May 3rd?
Could Teiji Moriya be planning to confirm whether I'm going to the Beika City Building during the tea party, and then find the right moment to blow me up along with the building?!
Conan was struck with a sudden shock.
Damn it. This isn't just an ordinary criminal. I have to hit back hard!
Mouri Kogoro set his beer aside and sat down with a solemn expression.
As a former detective of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, his heart was still with the force even though he had resigned. Now that the department was dealing with such a major crisis, how could he not pay close attention?
"I'm not sleeping tonight. Something big is coming!" Mouri Kogoro said tensely.
Anyway, he could just sleep in tomorrow morning, so what did it matter?
"No, there's actually a bomb?"
Inspector Megure rubbed his eyes, looking aghast.
Not far away, the officers sent from the Tokyo Regional Headquarters of the Public Security Bureau were also shocked.
Yuya Kazami estimated the blast yield of the explosion that had just occurred. Then, he recalled the amount of explosives that had been stolen. He was stunned.
That wasn't even a twentieth of the total!
"What's the situation?"
A Public Security Bureau Inspector, who had recently been transferred in, arrived at Yuya Kazami's side. He surveyed the state of the warehouse.
However, after he appeared, the attention of many Public Security members shifted toward this particular Inspector.
Yuya Kazami asked with a somewhat difficult expression, "Inspector, why did you show up wearing a food delivery uniform?"
"Are you working a part-time job again?"
Rei Furuya: "?"
You cold and heartless man, what's it to you if I work a part-time job? Am I taking your salary?
This is all to gather enough intelligence! Other Inspectors want to work part-time but don't even get the chance!
