Chapter 66 - A Leveraged Heart

The silver sea of the Seventh House was dead silent.

Arch-Auditor Malachai stood frozen on the white marble bridge, his ivory shepherd's crook trembling in his hand. Behind him, the six other Arch-Auditors—men and women who had spent millennia coldly foreclosing on mortal worlds—looked at Kaelen as if he were a live, un-pinned corporate warhead.

"You're bluffing," Malachai rasped, his voice losing its melodic perfection. "No soul-trader, no matter how desperate, would bind their personal mortality to a tier-seven derivative pool. The interest rate alone would disintegrate your spiritual matrix in minutes!"

"Then run the audit," Kaelen said softly.

He didn't pull his black coat back over his chest. The violet-black ink of his deficit throbbed in rhythm with his failing pulse, visible and raw against his pale skin. At the center of his chest, the gold-and-black seal of Lucian's personal holding company burned with a dim, ominous light.

Kaelen took a single step forward on the deck of the sanctified ghost ship.

"Run the diagnostic, Malachai," Kaelen continued, his voice dangerously calm. "Check Lucian's quarterly earnings report for the Seventh House. Page 4,000, Section B. Look at what asset is backing the yield on your liquid starlight ocean."

Malachai frantically raised his ivory crook, tapping the holographic ticker screen with slick, sweaty fingers. Pages of gold data scrolled past his eyes at hyper-speed.

Then, his face drained of what little color it had left.

"Item 709-Delta..." Malachai whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "'Unhedged Mortality Contract... Account Holder: Kaelen'."

"In my second lifetime, I didn't just fight Lucian," Kaelen said, his amber eyes locked on Malachai. "I traded with him. I signed a hidden leverage agreement that turned my personal life-force into the primary volatility buffer for this entire sector's faith reserves. If my heart stops while I am inside the Seventh House, the buffer fails. The liquid starlight ocean beneath you will instantly hyper-inflate, reducing the net worth of every deity in this sector to zero."

The six Arch-Auditors behind Malachai immediately took a collective step backward.

"Release her," Kaelen commanded.

Malachai's hand shook violently. He looked at Seraphina, who was still suspended mid-air by the glowing silver threads of divine execution.

"If I release her," Malachai stammered, "Lord Lucian will terminate my commission!"

"And if you don't," Kaelen said, raising his split rowan cane and pressing the sharp, jagged tip directly against the golden seal on his own heart, "I press this tip two inches deeper. Your sector defaults in three seconds. Choose your liquidation, Auditor."

"Stop! Stop!" Malachai shrieked, slamming his ivory crook onto the marble bridge.

SNAP!

The glowing silver threads severed instantly.

Seraphina dropped from the sky like a bird with clipped wings. She didn't land gracefully; she hit the wooden deck of the ship with a heavy, painful thud. But before the dust could even settle, she scrambled to her feet, ignoring her scraped hands and bruised knees, and threw herself toward Kaelen.

She wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face into his exposed, ink-stained chest, trembling so violently that Kaelen could feel her teeth chattering against his skin.

"Kaelen... Kaelen..." she sobbed, her voice raw, ruined, and completely unhinged. Her fingers clawed into his back, pulling him as close as physically possible, as if trying to merge her body with his. "You crazy... reckless... idiot... Don't ever do that... Don't ever point a weapon at your own heart..."

"I had to balance the negotiation, Seraphina," Kaelen murmured, his voice tight as he slowly pulled his coat closed, hiding the golden seal once more.

"I don't care about the negotiation!" she screamed into his chest, looking up at him with dark, tear-streaked eyes that burned with a terrifying, absolute obsession. "If you die to save me, I will tear down every sanctuary in the Third Heaven! I will burn my own soul into ash! Do you hear me?!"

Kaelen didn't answer. He couldn't.

A sharp, stabbing pain shot through his left lung, forcing a heavy, metallic gasp from his throat. He coughed violently into his hand, and when he pulled it away, a thick pool of dark, violet-black ink was smeared across his palm.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION] [Leverage Threat Executed: Hostile Negotiation Surcharge Applied] [Lifespan Decreased: -24 Hours] [Current Lifespan: 39 Days, 21 Hours, 04 Minutes.]

On the marble bridge, Malachai watched Kaelen cough up the debt-ink. A dark, opportunistic glint returned to the Auditor's pale eyes.

"You bought her freedom, Director," Malachai said, his voice regaining a fraction of its former smoothness as he adjusted his gold-and-crimson chasuble. "But you cannot buy passage through the Seventh House with threats alone. You have thirty-nine days left. The gate to the Eighth Layer—the House of Liquidated Mortals—is locked behind the High Temple of Yields."

Malachai pointed his ivory crook toward the massive floating glass cathedral in the distance, where billions of silver soul-glyphs circulated inside giant transparent pipes like liquid gold.

"To open that gate," Malachai sneered, "you must balance the Seventh House's seasonal dividend. You must pay an entry fee of One Billion Pure Faith Units."

"We don't have faith units," Seraphina spat, standing in front of Kaelen with her arms outstretched, her primordial starlight flaring violently despite the sector's tax warnings. "We are defaulted assets!"

"Then you don't pass," Malachai smiled, a cold, corporate sneer spreading across his lips. "Stand on your ship and watch your thirty-nine days count down to zero, Director. Or enter the cathedral and try to trade what little soul you have left."

Kaelen wiped the dark ink from his lips with the back of his sleeve. He looked past Malachai, staring straight at the towering glass cathedral.

He didn't look defeated. He looked like a man who had just spotted the single fatal flaw in an opponent's fortress.

"One billion units," Kaelen murmured, his amber eyes narrowing. "Seraphina... prepare the ledger. We aren't going to trade faith."

Seraphina looked back at him, her dark, obsessive eyes searching his cold face. "Then what are we going to do?"

Kaelen leaned heavily on his cane, a dark, terrifying smile carving its way onto his pale face.

"We are going to stage a hostile takeover of their temple."
